Always great to hear Monk!
Bo Carter sounded like a country artist rather than bluesman... If course, the dividers between genres wasn't so fixed back then (record companies decided African American singers should only play blues)

our family had the beatles on a pedestal but somehow the only 2 albums in the house were meet the beatles and "the beatles' 2nd album" -and what came on wabc-am. my older sister asked for "The Beatles" for xmas and of course the whole family sat around the living room to hear it for the first time.
revolution 9 confused us!
...but as it was the beatles, i (and i alone) figured there must be something going on that mattered, so i listened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
david w:

The Beatles tried to contact Stockhausen to meet, but he refused, labelling them trivial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm

despite that stupidity on his part, i still like Stockhausen!

That was a cool family jukebox, Chresti! We had The Barry Sisters Greatest Yiddish Hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
coelacanth∅:

heh, i started working on a cover of revolution 9 a few years ago then one day decided to see what other covers were out there and there were several.
i don't want to hear any of them because i don't want them to affect mine in any way, in case i ever get back to finish mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti you had an actual jukebox in the house?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
david w:

Some cool family playlists in this bunch. We had Broadway showtune albums, but they did pay for me to go to music school and get corrupted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm

@coel -a record player/stereo that was on continuously, after school, and all weekend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, what were their brilliant suggestions for what you should be doing with your time instead of playing music?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Dave Sewelson:

My folks suggested optometry instead of music...big mark-up in frames..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

...and I will assume it was your mother and father who did the discouraging. Your siblings probably cheered you on, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm

Greetings Franco T and Dave S! After I committed to the arts my mother wished the other kids to be "a jock and a lawyer" She got her wish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco they had no suggestions; just that only a tiny fraction of lucky extremely gifted musicians make it in music. it never crossed their unadventurous and blind minds to gear me for music engineering.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

i just listened to an early version of "corrina, corrina" (or"corrine corrina") a week ago but i now don't remember who it was. maybe it was Bo Carter i was out of the room when it was on before... but i also listened to "corrina blues" (?) by Blind Lemon Jefferson, which came before the Bo song.
i have to wonder how far back the roots go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
david w:

Corrina has been rebuilt, rewritten, revised, renamed, and renewed dozens of times but it started with Bo Carter in 1928, who took it from ???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm

Jefferson's came slightly earlier, though i can't say now how different it is. (even though i just heard it recently)

in the end you can play revolution 1 and revolution 9 at the same time, as it was intended. (which is now available on the 50th aniversary release of "the beatles", as well as a bootleg on youboob, where i got it from)

@coel wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
coelacanth∅:

well, after i posted that i thought it might seem a little jerky, like i'm suggesting how to program your (excellent) expedition you're taking us on. but i didn't mean it that way!
i just meant "in the end" like -"in the grand scheme of things" kinda way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
david w:

Gotcha, coel. I understood that. But it is curious!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm

OK, Riley, Riley good, this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i don't know why the original rev 1 got chopped off when the weirdness kicked in; but i'm pretty glad it did. it resulted in revolution 9 which i think opened a lot of people's minds to alternate definitions of what music is. it would've been just a long coda with sound effects, which had been done before. (though maybe not to the same degree?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
