This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

bass clarinet sounds so good, never better than when Dolphy is handling one

this whole Charlie Rouse album is just so celebratory, exploding with color
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm

It must be a fearsome instrument to play. I can't imagine any other reason why it isn't heard more often in jazz
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

looks like it would be a lot to wrangle and stay nimble
Avatar 7:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Surprising to me how alike & unlike sax & clarinet are.
Sax is quite easy - but there is a squeak threshold to even get started w/ clarinet...
Avatar 7:17pm

David Murray also plays a mean bass clarinet

Bass clarinet features on the Dark Star and Trane tributes, too, but I forget on which tracks.
Avatar 7:23pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Dean!
  7:23pm
Dean:

I played bass clarinet in junior high, after the then-graduated 8th grade bass clarinetist vacated the seat. I'd been playing tenor sax and clarinet. I was equally dreadful on all three reeds.
Avatar 7:24pm
hyde:

@LD yeah, there's the album Flash mentions. There's also a great India Navigation record called "Children" that has a couple, if I remember right. And the David Murray Octet plays Trane record has some...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Little Danny:

Whoa, Dean. An album of Grateful Dead covers. I'm not sure I'll ever be man enough
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Little Danny:

@hyde: thank you! Now googling
  7:25pm
Dean:

I swear, when I brought the instrument home the first time, it felt bigger than me.

That Dead covers album might be Murray's best seller, for obvious reasons.

Avatar 7:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So - Quincy Jones ripped this for Austin Powers - or covered it ??
  7:31pm
Dean:

Couldn't keep the bass clarinet, because it was the junior high school's, on loan. The only instrument that I owned was the clarinet. It needs serious therapy these days. Ironically, there's a reed and brass repair shop around the corner from me.

The Dark Star album is good, maybe not Murray's best. I suppose half the fun is hearing the Dead through Murray, but if you didn't know the Dead tunes you'd nevertheless enjoy the Murray big ensemble sound.
Avatar 7:32pm
Flash Strap:

Quincy's version came out in 1962, they're just doing the world's best cover of it

Claw Hammer is one of those bands that a-l-m-o-s-t made it. A pity they didn't, but owing to that fact I got to see them at a bunch of small venues. They did a mean cover of Devo's first album, too, but their original work was also striking.
