Wu Man, Pipa Superstar

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Wu Man is a master of the pipa, a pear-shaped four-string lute that is considered to be the definitive Chinese folk instrument. Search "P-I-P-A" on YouTube and Wu Man dominates the results.

Not surprisingly she's in high demand - as a performer and as a composer too: On Saturday April 27th, her longtime collaborators Kronos Quartet will perform one of her compositions at NY's Town Hall. (It's part of their live music and film performance, A Thousand Thoughts.)

Meanwhile in California, she joins another longtime collaborator, Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, for several concerts starting April 26th.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. She has many more musical projects, and a slew of albums to her credit - including her latest, Fingertip Carnival - a collaboration with son jarocho ensemble Son de San Diego.

We’re honored that Wu Man will take time from her busy schedule to join us on WFMU!

Hi Bas and chresti and everyone! I wasn't at the Sonic Youth show in Rome by the way... but I did see Sonic Youth and Swans play for about a dozen people in Ann Arbor MI circa 1982... if video of that one turned up I'd be truly impressed!

Don't tell the Greeks, but they're in Eastern Europe (just don't say they're in the Balkan peninsula).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rob W:

βrian: They played at Joe's Star Lounge - I remember putting up a lot of fliers - it didn't help much! Here's a photo of the flier: oldpunkflyers.tumblr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rob W:

Fair enough northguineahills! Plus this track is from Thrace so I suppose it's the most Eastern-Europey you can get in Greece... but yes, these matters can be very touchy. Just ask the folks in Northern Macedonia!
Avatar 6:56pm βrian:

Thanks, Rob. Loved Joe's!

Franco Twinkie: Actually there's a performance by Silk Road Ensemble featuring Wu Man (among many others) Sun April 28, 7 pm @ Great Hall at CSU Northridge, CA - info here: www.thesoraya.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rob W:

It's kinda east coast west coast ngh! Wu Man is based in San Diego and Min Xiao-Fen is based here in NYC. They are really the two prominent pipa players in North America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Rob! Northridge is practically on the moon for us folks on the East side.
Avatar 7:35pm northguineahills:

@Rob W: In the beforetime, I saw Min Xiao-Fen play w/ Derek Bailey's Company at Tonic. I got some good albums that night. Thanks as per usual!

I will say this, and then let it go: Wu Man would go over like gang busters at the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium. It is one of the most beautiful historic venues in So. Cal. Plus, a hugely supportive Chinese community. And I can walk there...Ha!
