"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Pretty sure very Friday morning starts with JA calling the station at 8:59 from a heliport in Brooklyn, telling Clay to cue up "Wake Up," and then a helicopter ride to the roof of WFMU, where JA is descending from a rope ladder literally right now to take over the station controls.

Am I the only one who heard an insane cut up of the last half hour of Clay's show on the radiorethink stream just now? It was grabbing random 5 second chunks of the last half hour and playing them out of order. I reloaded the radiorethink window and it works fine now. Like I said I thought Olivia was glitching the stream or something.
  9:33am
Listener Robert:

I commented on Irwin's show about the evidence from the Summer 1986 LCD that DJs were hard to get -- 4 & 5 hour shows, DJs taking 2 SCHEDULED shows a week, a bit of listener art consisting of a note calling for help because needing someone to sub for them.

Andy, many of us must've heard about WFMU the same way I did in 1980, and listened only at night to the likes of Frank O'Toole, Pat Duncan, Paul Cavanaugh (and Morbid) and Jim Price, and got a mistaken impression of WFMU, thinking it was all punk, not realizing that's just how things lined up temporarily for us. That letter writer apparently thought the rest of WFMU's programming was some new departure. He was a little snotty, Ken was a little snotty back.

I haven't had nearly as much trouble since I started eating local honey but my allergies and sinus problems already come and go randomly anyway, so maybe the local honey is just tasty and actually has no woo-woo curative home-remedy effects at all. I have no idea. I really need several clones of myself so I can do experiments on them. Some of them get local honey, some of them get goldenseal and valerian root or dandelion extracts or whatever nasty thing is the current fad, some get expensive kombucha, some of them just get thwacked with wet noodles.

Krys O.:

Listener Robert, I was on the air from 1985-1991 and on some schedules I had two shows a week. One week, I also did three fill-ins. Five shows in one week! But our reception was only within a 50 mile radius, so it was for naught.
  10:14am
Listener Robert:

And the funny thing is, I might have already had that LCD in the moldy papers in the garage, don't remember if I was getting it that far back, got this copy recently from a friend who also subscribed. But back then I didn't listen to as MANY programs as now, and at the time of that issue I'd just moved into a shadow zone that made WFMU only an occasional treat for a while.

I suspect these things work differently for everybody, but combo of allegra and morning/evening saline nose spray has been working okay this year (subbed in the saline this year for azelastine spray and seems to working). But for clogged ear stuff I give in & take a pseudoephedrine.

  10:21am

Krys, YOU did the Subgenius? I'd assumed those came from Ivan Stang. I listened to some of those in the 1980s, only I wasn't sure it was on WFMU rather than another station.

Zetti, both I and my friend, unknown to each other at the time, listened to Synthetic Pleasure, but I had another friend who was friendly with Don Slepian. I have the latter's Music Through The Ages calling card.

Then again my friend, Greg who recently gave me that old LCD, had mixed up Synthetic Pleasure with Vin Scelsa's program, so I'm not really sure what he listened to. We each have a lot of trouble with names, and the intervening decades don't help with memory.

Zbigniew Cybulski was the James Dean of Poland. I would free the bees from their capsule. My dad had one nostril cauterized because of frequent epistaxis which I also suffer from. I had my throat cauterized when I was a kid due to frequent sore throats. Having a needle stuck in the back of my throat hurt like a mofo.

Thanks, Krys, maybe I'll relive those nights. I won't complain if it turns out I want to skip your intros, because even with your favorite DJ, aren't there SOME times you shout back at the radio, just get one with it? OTOH, I might prefer to listen to ONLY your intros, better than the part from Stang, in which case I'll tell you.

Thanks for the tip, Zetti. I think Don Slepian was then a Jerseyite and my friend Ed's interaction with him was over interests other than music. I think I tried to phone him once on a long shot he'd be interested commercially in a completely other thing of mine.
