It was limited to 6500 and it was 30 complete previously unreleased live shows in honor of fare thee well. It was a waste of money actually but I’ve enjoyed delving into it. I had heard every show already but still was nice to revisit in soundboard vs god knows how many generation cassette tapes

The Leonard Bernstein set is several hundred dollars cheaper for more material. Probably because a great deal of the music is public domain.

I suspect some of the consumers of the CDs+DVDs already owned all or most of the LPs reissued as CDs. There are other issues out there of the same order of magnitude -- the Charles Munch 86 CD box, e.g. -- but Lenny, like the Dead, is something of a national treasure. That box, by the way, was only the complete DG label releases. Bernstein's discography includes as well recordings on Columbia, Angel, etc. The CBS box set from late 2017 (another centenary tribute) is 100 CDs. But Sony had already issued a Bernstein Edition during the '80s and '90s!

Anyway, these discs are not designed to be heard as "albums" per se, nor were the original LPs, necessarily. When they're programmed well, indeed, one wants to hear everything, but I suspect classical fans are generally more picky about what to play, in what order, etc. That is, until the present century, when the whole concept of "album" has been challenged.

I guess I'm skeptical of these lavish sets that aim for comprehensiveness over "listenability." Again, though, I get the impulse.

The Dead box set for instance according to David Lemieux their archivist is supposed to tell the story of the dead through their evolution as a band. Clearly as the years progressed, there were far less successful shows that were worth including. The 80s/90s still had some great shows but the consistency was gone. Kids don’t do heroin.

Come to think of it, the Dead make for a nice comparison with Bernstein. Both released a ton of recorded music, and both had careers as live artists that were arguably more important than their studio careers.
