FYI: The "God Is Bogus" tape was released just as you see it in the playlist pic -- it never had a cover. See here for an interesting article about the guy behind the tape: www.friendsofbigshout.com...

A reverse image search says it might be designed by Neville Brody, but I gave up after 75 album covers or so.

Hiya, Kay! The mystery LP is a 1983 comp of mostly British industrial outfits. It's on Fetish Records.

Rich in Washington:

There was a weird compact cassette format in the 80s, up until the digital era, where something like four hours of (monophonic) music could be wrung out of a C90 cassette. It was for background music for businesses and it utilized all four tracks of a plain cassette, with the player going forwards and backwards, alternately.

I found one of the machines at a junk store and nearly bought it after doing some research, but then realized I don't use or take adequate care of the tape machines I have now, so didn't buy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm

the only record that immediately comes to mind, doing that one track per channel thing, is Tucson Arizona Low Fi band Doo Rag, who pressed a single called Two Tones To Tune.

I'm looking at the picture of the tape on now, and am wondering: What's a "crolyn"? Apparently this tape has 500 of them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

Current track is quite nice by way of lost 80s-ness.
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

RE "Crolyn": Found a mention in a 1971 article from Chemical and Engineering News: "Tapes based on Du Pont's Crolyn chromium dioxide magnetic tape technology seem poised to claim a substantial portion of the rapidly growing market for high-performance audio cassettes, which offer better frequency response, greater dynamic range, and higher signal-to-noise ratio."

someone on Tamar's comment board confessed a (passed?) crush on her. i too had a crush on her in the 90s, via radio voice, pre-internet. i called the station sometimes, especially in the middle of the night when the hosts had no way of knowing if anyone's out there listening. i told her she had a laugh in her voice that made me happy. then i met Tamar and Rich together whilst volunteering at a record fair and that was the end of that! (especially since i liked Rich too...as a radio voice)

Rich in Washington:

before I started doing radio at a station, I once got to meet a bunch of the DJs I'd been listening for years at an event. I told one of the female hosts of a show I'd really like that I had lots of tape recordings of her show and her reaction was a sort of exaggerated horror. She sort of sunk back behind the table where the station was tabling.
A few years later, after I started DJing there and we became friends, she told me her reaction was based on the many years of weird stalkery callers, one notable one was a guy who listened to her show from prison, who would frequently call her and update her on his parole status. His calls got increasingly creepier until he finally got released. Thankfully, he seemed to have moved on to other things, as she never heard from him again, but I think my admission that I taped her show (I taped lots of other people's radio shows too) sort of triggered her or she thought I might be that guy.

Some of the erstwhile WFMU DJs were more easy to run into than others.Tony lived in Park Slope, so it wasn't unusual to run into him! But others were more mysterious, and you had to catch fleeting glimpses of them at record fairs etc.

I had a weird female stalker years ago -- but she sent me some very interesting tapes, so it all worked out well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Rich in Washington:

I once showed up to do my show at 9:30 or so and there was this young hippie dude sitting in the foyer table area. He had let himself in during business hours and just sort of hung out in the station until I showed up. He wanted to give me a CD of his music/art. He was really sheepish and just took off as soon as he gave it to me.
It was actually pretty amusing. A collection of cassette tape jerk experiments. I played it on subsequent shows. His included photocopied notes didn't include any contact info of any kind and the notes didn't exactly make sense, trackwise.
I should dig it up. It was pretty weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm reasonably positive i never creeped anyone out by calling the station, thankfully!
one female radio host (off the schedule at the moment) i used to call fairly often and we'd talk until she had to do a mic break. i told her about a hot chocolate recipe i made up and she said i should come over and make some for her.
foolish me didn't do it.
