all ears.

Dean:

This "tune" reminds me of one of my favorite books of the late '70s, Techniques of Crime Scene Investigation. It served to supply a cover of an issue of Flipside fanzine at the time.
Avatar 12:12am
sv:

thank you for the ears, hams - i am in desperate need of ears
Avatar 12:13am

@dean that sounds like some grisly reading
  12:14am

Perhaps, but it remains in print in new editions.

Grouper!

still stuck in a non-placial ambiguous temporal zone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am

i like me some grouper
Avatar 12:26am

@dean not familiar with that label, will look into it!!

i will confess that i have a grouper tattoo

you really have a tattoo of a grouper? -i'm impressed.
  12:28am
Dean:

Started in Berkeley, moved to Portland, OR, thence to Brooklyn. Matthew is quite an artist and curator. He shut down operations not long ago, i.e., no more new releases, but I think he has inventory and, of course, digital.

ngh, stay up for a while! i could use the company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34am
coelacanth∅:

there are many species of grouper so i wonder which one
and of course aside from always thinking of the person who calls herself grouper (also impressively) i can't help but think of the zefrank video about groupers.
funny shit.
Avatar 12:37am
sv:

ah jeez, i actually misread your question - i have a tattoo of some of grouper's artwork, not a tattoo of an actual grouper, though now that you mention it that might not be a bad idea. not familiar with the zefrank video you mention!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am
coelacanth∅:

i may be mistaken
it may be the anglerfish zefrank did a video for - decidedly more hideous in general. worth watching anyway.

so i didn't know grouper was a visual artist as well.
Avatar 12:44am
sv:

i gotta look into that

it's the anglerfish after all.

patterns. i like it. i did a lot of pattern/texture imagery when i did b/w film photography.

patterns everywhere! fractals everywhere! symmetry everywhere!
Avatar 12:52am
sv:

fair play!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
coelacanth∅:

extreme close-ups were my favorite thing. the inside of cut fruit or a nut; flowers or other plant life; animals' hair patterns and their paws...human made structures of course...
Avatar 12:56am
sv:

i took a film photo class in high school and was fascinated by a lot of the same things, though i never had a zoom lens that would allow me to get really granular. my teacher always used to say that if you get close enough to anything it'll look gorgeous - i tend to agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
coelacanth∅:

even when i succumbed to digital photography, for financial reasons, i enjoyed it (though the results are certainly inferior to film) but then my camera was stolen, and my extreme macro lens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am
coelacanth∅:

i must agree with that teacher's sentiment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59am
coelacanth∅:

(really like that penetralia album cover)
Avatar 12:59am
sv:

ah, that's a shame :(
Avatar 1:00am
sv:

you can get that album for free on bandcamp if you wish [pay what you want] - each song has a different image associated with it that appears to be a manipulation of that image you see before you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05am
coelacanth∅:

cool i'm getting it!
i never take anything for free via bandcamp unless it gives me no option.
if i want it enough to download it i can pay 2-3 bucks, at least.
Avatar 1:06am
sv:

rad! jute gyte also makes insanely strange black metal if that's your thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am
coelacanth∅:

one of my things yeh
  1:08am
rw:

Photography?! I had a photo teacher said the same thing. But it was as as an admonishment.
  1:08am
Dean:

I took a photography class in '72. We made our own pin-hole box cameras and developed our own shots.
Avatar 1:11am
sv:

@rw i think that there was a hint of disdain in my teacher's voice too, but i chose to ignore it and a lot of shots he favored tended towards these closeups revealing the form we're not usually privy to
Avatar 1:11am
sv:

i'd still like to try making a pinhole box camera
  1:16am
rw:

I've made tons of cameras. It's pretty easy. When I taught photography on the first day I would build a camera out of a cardboard box, a cheap plastic magnifying glass, some duct tape and as a viewing screen I'd have one of the students go to the bathroom and grab a toilet seat protector. It was kind of magic and clearly demonstrated the simplicity of the mechanics.
Avatar 1:18am
sv:

that's so rad - great first day activity/demonstration too!
Avatar 1:21am
sv:

so how about anne carson y'all
  1:21am
rw:

I never made a career of teaching but I did find that if I could get the students excited about what they were doing right away it made my job much easier. They'd create their own energy and all I would have to do was guide them. If that energy didn't take hold in the beginning I'd have to pull them along which was kind of a drag.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am
coelacanth∅:

yes Anne Carson! (yes i know. that's so 25 minutes ago)
Avatar 1:37am
sv:

time is just about irrelevant here! glad you enjoyed her reading. i think this piece of hers is amazing and i hope she publishes it.
Avatar 1:37am
Hams:

yeah, me too. my reading list this year is pretty sad for an ol' comp. lit. major. i did read a book my dad's been pushing on me for the past 10yrs., though.
Avatar 1:38am
sv:

i'm in the same boat as you, ham - what book did you finally read through?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am
coelacanth∅:

i never made a pinhole camera but i understand the concept and helped a young person i know to make hers work. i have rigged many "disposable" cameras for repeat use.
if i still had darkroom privileges i'd make a pinhole camera RIGHT NOW
  1:41am
Dean:

Every two months I try mightily to read ~500 pages of reviews of new classical recordings, on top of which I read scholarship in law and literary criticism. Yet once upon a time (pre-kids) I read much more. Much more.
Avatar 1:42am

you're making me feel bad about my reading habits, dean, i must admit

reading Love in the time of cholera now. only about 50 pages in. much less challenging so far than any other full length novels i've read by Garcia-Marquez.
Avatar 1:44am
Hams:

RED BADGE OF COURAGE. it was great. for some reason, i was always reluctant to read it. gotta watch the john huston adaptation now.
Avatar 1:44am
sv:

i've been meaning to read that one for a while now, always pass on it for some reason
Avatar 1:46am
sv:

i still need to read red badge as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am
coelacanth∅:

i wrote it down, somewhere... but someone here must know ...what full-length book it is that's based entirely on a very short passage of time, like 10 minutes or an hour or something. (that's all i remember about it...but i very much want to read it)
Avatar 1:48am
Hams:

it really got me, upon reading, when i realized what a "red badge of courage" was.
