Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm

@Sem: I bought Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy today, based on a long ago recommendation of yours. The owner of the bookshop told me Davies was an occasional customer back when he had a bookstore in Toronto, and he's to date the only customer to have complained that a book's price was far too low: it was a first edition of one of Davies' own books

After you mop up the blood from these charming ballads, you might cleanse your palette with a little Jean Redpath singing Rabbie Burns tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
David D:

Yes, they don't write 'em quite the same anymore...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
fred:

I missed it today, but I once saw M.A. Numminen live. I loved it, as he performed his take on the Tractatus, which is probably the book I've read most often
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
David D:

Yes, Numminen is fantastic live. I saw a show of his with tango and jazz, lots of humor and fun.

Very pretty, like being at a Jewish wedding.

Yes, it is a klezmer tune, but played on other instruments.

Our local klezmer band is Yid Vicious. I came across them once playing on the bike path.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
David D:

Doc: Cittern? There is a long list of instruments on that one: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
David D:

Yid Vicious is a great name - will have to track them down...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
doctorjazz:

David, on the Discogs instrument list, 2 down from Cittern is Cymbal. It's a kind of hammered dulcimer I've seen/heard in some klezmer bands. I believe Andy Statman had one in his early bands.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Webhamster Henry:

He could turn any cheezy tune into magic, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm

Thanks, Doc - of course!
Avatar 🚂 4:35pm
northguineahills:

There is a train track here, where 40 km has turned into a bike/hiking trail. The remaining track doesn't look more kept up then the pic. But in the last two years, I've seen four trains. Apparently, it comes to a lumber yard and a brick warehouse. As much I love rail to trails, I wish this nation would embrace rail infrastructure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
David D:

NGH: Yes, that would be great. Rail travel has much less of an environmental impact if nothing else. In any case, the track in the picture is actually a random left-over track from something at the edge of Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin.
Avatar 🚂 4:41pm

@NGH: any news after your recent job posting endeavor?
Avatar 🚂 4:55pm

No news yet, last interview was last Tuesday, and it became a holiday week, so most offices took the week off and are now just getting back to work.

Brian in UK:

Hello David and those who know their stop without having to look.
Avatar 🚂 5:00pm
northguineahills:

@fred: Thankfully I don't need blood thinners, even though I have congenital vascular issues (heart attack, grandfather; stroke and pulmonary embolism, father), as having Van Willebrand's Syndrome (false hemophilia), I don't create enough proteins for my blood to clot normally. So, when I bleed, I bleed (and make a mess). and I bruise super easily, so, I'm always black and blue, being the clumsy MF I am...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
David D:

Hello Brian! That is always a good ability to have, in fact - especially if one is prone to napping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
David D:

NGH: Oh, just read your comment - that sounds difficult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

Hi everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
David D:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 🚂 5:20pm
northguineahills:

@David: It's never stopped me from being active in sports or the outdoors, but it freaks out my wife and friends when I severely cut myself (like when I cut myself 7cm washing a beer glass when it shattered, cutting to the bone, leaving large pools of blood, wife just about fainted). But, I'm used to it, and have been taking first aid lessons since kindergarten, so, I know how to apply pressure, and apply a tourniquet. It's no big deal to me (that, and I have a high tolerance for pain).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
fred:

@NGH: that sucks. I have a collection of big bruises myself these days (biggest 3" wide), probably blood-thinner overdose, I have a blood test tomorrow, which will probably be fine. It's a roller-coaster thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
David D:

Ouch, I hope that goes well, Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
David D:

NGH: Glad it isn't too much of a hardship.
Avatar 🚂 5:24pm
northguineahills:

Rain Sultanov, new to me!

Got to use all of my eggplants, so more eggplant tempura tacos for everyone (how do I upload them?)

@fred: large bruises are the norm for me. I have to have a bleeding test before a doctor cuts me or prescribes medication. Luckily, in the last few years, I have been the lowest threshold, but I'm not allow to donate blood due to the fear if I cut myself later, I might bleed out. (which sucks, being Type O+, I'd like to donate).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
David D:

Eggplant tempura tacos sound magical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
fred:

@NGH: I'm barred from donating blood too because the meds basically spoil it. How is your spice garden going?
Avatar 🚂 5:30pm
northguineahills:

Well, I have too much produce to use (a good problem), and I'm out of my house at the end of the month
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
doctorjazz:

Ah, names I know (Drake,Mateen), whew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm

Doctorjazz: I suppose one of the ideas of this show and of much of WFMU in general is musical journeying and adventure, always finding and sharing and hearing new stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm

Von Willibrands disease has different subtypes; most will respond to a medication called DDAVP, which can be given IV or by Nasal spray, which should stop the bleeding. (But you probably know that)

I listen to hear things I don't know as well, learn about musicians, genres, etc. It is humbling how much there is to learn...
Avatar 🚂 5:55pm

@doctorjazz: it hasn't been a 'major problem' since I was 20 years old (the last time I failed a bleeding test). Since adulthood, it's just been a nuisance I have to be mindful of).
