Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Stanley:

@fred: after years of banging on about my enthusiasm for this station and all its wonders, I think I have converted only one person to a regular listener.
I will, however, continue to wear my tees at gigs, apart from the fact i haven't got much else to wear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: any 14 Juillet plans?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am
Stanley:

Hi Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am
Jeff Golick:

@Stanley! I'm like you...still haven't formulated a decent response for those occasions when someone points at my shirt and says, "FMU!" Usually, it's something like, "whoo!"
  9:20am
Listener Gregory:

The problem with t-shirts with messages is that you forget you're wearing them. The last time I wore my woof-moo shirt, someone on the street said "great station!" to me mid-afternoon, and I thought he was insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am
Jeff Golick:

Yes. Louie CK had a similar bit, only he forgot that he *wasn't* wearing the t-shirt he thought he was iirc.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:23am
fred:

@Stanley: I hear you, by now my WFMU T-shirts outnumber my other ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Stanley:

I once had a very nice looking young woman throw her arms around me, recognising my t-shirt. I straight away started chatting about it, only to notice over her shoulder three very pissed off 'jock-type' guys glaring at me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Jeff Golick:

Btw, if you are a marimba fan (as am I), I can recommend this Stoltzman record unreservedly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
Jeff Golick:

How's that tune go, @Stanley? "The men don't know, but the women understand"?
  9:25am
Listener Gregory:

Did I have a petit mal event, or did this start out as "Richard Stoltzman" on the playlist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am
Jeff Golick:

No, you are eagle-eyed, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am
Jeff Golick:

The record is credited to the husband and wife team, but as this is solo Mika, I figured she deserved solo playlist credit.

Anybody know if WFMU would like 10,000 (guesstimate) CDs? A friend is moving from house to a Manhattan apartment, ripped them, needs to downsize. Mostly old rock, folks, country, blues, some jazz, good stuff (the missus threatened divorce of I take them; not sure what if do with them anyway. Already have trouble finding space for albums). Or other ideas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Jeff Golick:

FMU would probably take them? I can ask. Even if not idea for the library, they could be sold at future record fairs...

This is a very interesting tribute to Ayler, because for the most part it doesn't sound like Ayler (to my hearing). It was obviously AEC from the first gong.

Always find it interesting that free jazz often has really basic, Sing song type of melodies (in contrast to the really complex melodies of bop. Post bop, etc). I understand why; when there are no harmonic guideposts, prearranged sections, you need something that can be referred to by all to make it a"piece". But, many melodies of Ayler, Ornette, late Trane, would work well as kiddie songs.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:43am
fred:

I generally dislike summer, but I have to admit it's a good time for Ayler's music
  11:44am

@doctorjazz, I tried to interest a colleague in Ayler's music by telling him to imagine that he had picked up a pot and started banging it with a spoon, while singing. It doesn't seem to have worked.

I imagine a cartoon of 'Syedas Songflute'. Trane is bent over music stands pondering innumerable complexities - & his little kid walks in tooting on a whistle.
