I listened to the archive of the July 1 show. The Joni Mitchell clip said ‘60s antiwar folks put down Vietnam soldiers. Historians have mostly debunked this. The antiwar movement reached out to G.I.s, starting antiwar folk coffeehouses outside bases; there was a G.I. antiwar movement /in/ the military. Joni’s a brilliant musician, but a historian? nah.

I have not the best hearing, yet, I can hear a cockroach on the otherside of house, or my neighbor closing their car door a block away, while I'm asleep, so, listening has affected my sleeping patterns...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:20pm Carmichael:

I used earplugs when I saw Mick Taylor, many moons ago. More because of the venue than the artist. Conversely, I stood in front of Steppenwolf's speakers at about the same era, and could hear fairly decently the next day.

He, he.. I've seen some great Steven O'Malley shows as well! But that particular Sunn O))) gig had over half the public leaving. Rather green faced or actually throwing up.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:33pm TDK60:

Loud Wedding Present sounds good. (What-ja say?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:34pm soup and fog:

Wow, this Prince song is great! I thought I didn't like Prince...
  Mon. 7/15/19 5:34pm Friday:

Does anyone else hear a Cocteau Twins loop in this Prince song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/15/19 5:34pm Bas NL:

(It was a FANTASTIC concert BTW!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How many of those voices are him. How many singing @ once - how many trax. Scary talent that bugger...
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:36pm northguineahills:

@Scott: Same here, when I saw Sunno)))

There was a club near Washington Square called love, and the soundsystem was so great, even w/ early dubstep, my body would vibrate, but when I walked out, I had no hearing loss. The volume wasn't really too loud, just crystal clear....
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:37pm northguineahills:

It's Mar-Tee-Ka!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Grennfaced & tossing. Amazing.

M.B.V. 1993
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:40pm Webhamster Henry:

Maryanne Amacher was famous for loudness, but I never got to her installations.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:40pm TDK60:

Loudest show? Hard to say...Jefferson Airplane? The Who? Gone? (Black Flag side project), Jucifer?
Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/15/19 5:40pm TomDash:

Not sure if it was the loudest, but Borbetomagus was REALLY loud on a sunny summer free matinee at Tonic once. Sunny outside, dark and loud in the club...Other one was probably Dinosaur Jr. circa 1988 in a basement club in Northampton Mass - wow!
  Mon. 7/15/19 5:40pm peter_h_christ:

neurosis @ TLA in Philly in ‘02 maybe..pounding headache for days after

Yeah - the Casio PT-20 drum machine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:41pm DouglasInDallas:

Vas Deferens Organization representing the Big D! Loudest concert? Tackhead at Empire (now Lizard Lounge) in Dallas. I was in a rolling chair in the balcony and it was so loud it made my chair roll from the vibrations...
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Technically speaking, loudest would be Motörhead in an outdoor venue (operation rock & roll fest, weedsport NY) .. But loudest for small venue would be three-way tie: Borbetomagus at DC Space, Swans at the original 9:30 club, Merzbow at DC Arts Center (all 1980s) -- Never earplugs back then, because we were idiots.
  Mon. 7/15/19 5:43pm ja:

Black Flag during My War tour (also in Dallas).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:44pm Ike:

Curve.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:44pm Marshall Stacks:

Dinosaur Jr. at the Fillmore (?) in 1989(?). It was so loud I couldn't identify any of the songs.

Lasting effects: Mild tinnitus, and an appreciation for sound protection devices. I always wear earplugs at shows now, Etymotic or disposable 3M ones.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Crash Worship. Two Marshall 4x12 cabinets cranked to 11 in a very small room. I ran out into the street.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

HA! I recall a similar experience with Crash Worship (if memory serves, opening for Psychic TV during one of those acid house tours)...
  Mon. 7/15/19 5:47pm Ringo Starfish:

Mahavishnu Orchestra was the loudest & best Band I witnessed in 70's.Stickmen with Rayguns also played very loud in big D.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/15/19 5:47pm fred:

Glenn Branca's 8th symphony was also a physical experience
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:47pm northguineahills:

When I saw MBV in 2012, I refused to wear earplugs, I was nearly deaf for two days, but it was worth it....
  Mon. 7/15/19 5:48pm Noel:

Judas Priest. 1984. Norfolk Scope (terrible sound in there). Went to Taco Bell afterwards & couldn't hear what the lady was saying. Definitely did some ear damage that night.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:48pm geezerette:

Thanks, Scott! High Energy appreciated!

Yes, Stickmen was pretty loud. Really piercing guitar.
Avatar Mon. 7/15/19 5:49pm northguineahills:

@Franco: My ex-roomates long term ex-gf played drums in Crash Worship. When he told me, she seemed liked such a nice normal girl. Then I saw them play.....

A distant #2 would be Nick Cave at The Wiltern. At this point in my life I had seen/heard so many bands, I was a little crispy around the edges and decided it was time to cut back.
Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/15/19 5:53pm TomDash:

Hey Marshall Stacks (apt handle!) - you and me both with Dino Jr - although I could make out the songs, it was just J's guitar was mind-numbingly loud...and I was in a small basement bar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/15/19 5:53pm DouglasInDallas:

Also loudest: Beastie Boys (with Cypress Hill & Rollins Band) at the Sportatorium in Dallas (where the Von Erichs et al would wrestle). Supposed to be no smoking but people smoked ciggies in the concourse but weed in the arena. Ricky Powell got on stage before the Boys and asked if anyone had a joint and probably 100-150 joints flew on stage. Ears were ringing for 3-4 days after..... Have to agree with the Crash Worship, Stickmen, and Black Flag shows being up top of the list too...
