Grisey, the greatest (so far) of the spectralists.
Avatar 3:11pm
Schell:

In this passage hearing the four notes in the piano tuned a quartertone flat.

sphere, you need this: wfmu.org...

thanks. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm

I hesitated to say "spectralists" as he grew to despise the label. But it is a lovely tag if you must have one.

I defer to you, sir. Is that you hiding in there? Happy birthday!

only because I don't know this work

is this live piano processing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
david w:

I think yes.
  3:47pm
Denmanic:

is he processing himself or is someone else doing it and if so who?

Hi I've been typing in other screens, but enjoying the show!
Avatar 3:48pm
Schell:

Says it was recorded in his studio. Argentinian composer that I wasn't familiar with previously. Is there a connection with Roulette or just another Weinstein find?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
david w:

Thanks, Henry!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Webhamster Henry:

There's an app, BitKlavier, that does this kind of processing. I haven't played with it much though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Webhamster Henry:

Well it does the note-y stuff not the timbral stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
david w:

Thinking about this, I suspect that the studio had some influence on the processing, so not clear to sort out what was live.
  3:54pm
Denmanic:

interesting to contemplate where is the line between note-y and timbral
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'll take a look - but with a nice Roli Seaboard or Continuum, or two, you can do all this live, I think.
  3:55pm
Denmanic:

while you're playing?
  3:57pm
Denmanic:

this is hyperpiano, processed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
david w:

Yes, D I thought so too. Shelley Hirsch turned me on to this piece. No Roulette connection.

I heard somewhere that Cage composed this on a Steinway O. Anyone know if that's true?
  4:32pm
Denmanic:

I ask because I have one
Avatar 4:35pm
Linda Lee:

Cage: always brilliant.
i was lucky enough to care for a woman who was part of Cage's first mushroom society group. invited to all city area recitals & spent good quality time with him on their outings. always a twinkle in his eye, she said.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm

Well, Linda Lee, that is nice to hear. He made strong friendships, but really kept his public persona shrouded (he had been abused so much).

sure, of course.

Avatar 4:42pm

Cage was asked to lead a course at the new school & he agreed only on the condition that he be allowed to talk about mushrooms. agreed! so the new york mycological society grew out of it. they had an absolute blast!
Avatar 4:43pm
Schell:

This is a nice recording, very tough to render the dynamics of prepared piano accurately, often you get distortion in the upper range since the spectrum is so oddly biased in that direction.
  4:44pm
Denmanic:

I would also recommend James Tenney's recording.
  4:47pm
Denmanic:

Margaret also made a good recording of Four Walls
