getting along ok, mark. really glad i came across that charlie haden record. appreciate it.
  12:28am
markr:

Yeah it's an old favorite of mine. Most of tonight's music will be from this millennium, but that one holds up well, I think.
Avatar 12:37am
Hams:

yeah, gonna have to find a copy. all-star band.
  12:40am

It's still in print, I'm pretty sure

yeah, I’m only posting at night (snohomish county washington).
  1:07am
markr:

Well, that works out nicely for me, since I only seem to be on at night when I fill in (except for July 4th afternoon this year)
Avatar 1:07am
Scraps:

oooh, quantic! from Bewdley, Worcestershire!
  1:11am
markr:

Really, my research says he was born in Columbia and now resides in Brooklyn.
  1:15am
Johnzon:

this song reminds me of a lou reed song off magic and loss... forget which one...
  1:17am
markr:

Well this next song is gonna make you forget every song you ever heard in your life.

  1:20am
markr:

Well, wherever he's from, I like him. No this BETRAY ME song, Johnson.
Avatar 1:23am
Scraps:

Wikipedia says Will Holland born in England, moved to Columbia.... don’t know which is right
  1:25am
markr:

Oh OK. That makes sense then. My source just left out the born in England part. Just accounted for the move from Columbia to Brooklyn.
Avatar 1:26am
Scraps:

Anyway, I like Bewdley, Worcestershire. I want to be from there.

Johnzon:

I really like that movie
  1:39am
markr:

Me too Johnson, I don't think enough people saw it. I think Oscar Isaac is one of this generation's truly great actors.
  1:41am
Johnzon:

what else is he in?
  1:41am
Johnzon:

there's a lot of great cameos in that movie
  1:42am
Johnzon:

John Goodman
  1:43am
Johnzon:

Adam Driver
  1:43am
markr:

He was tremendous in this very disturbing movie called "Ex Machina"
  1:45am
Johnzon:

"very disturbing" is a genre I tend to avoid... but maybe Ill give it a try!
  1:47am
markr:

More commercially, he was in the "Star Wars" trilogy.
  1:52am
markr:

He's been in a bunch of stuff before Llewyn Davis which is worth seeking out. I didn't know him before that movie, but he's been around awhile
  1:53am
Johnzon:

really?! wait... I think I remember him actually, never made the connection he looks a lot different without the beard
  1:54am
markr:

Totally different, I know. He was in this really great HBO miniseries where he played the mayor of Yonkers or something. He played Joseph as in Mary & Joseph in a movie called "The Nativity" from 2006. He's done a ton of great stuff.
Avatar 1:55am
Scraps:

Love Sylvie Courvoisier.
  1:55am
markr:

Only very recently discovered her I'm ashamed to say, Scraps. But better late than never. This album is completely improvised, her and the violinist Mark Feldman, I think it's incredible.

Great sets, mr mark r.
Making pecan cashew cookies, cooling now.
Avatar 1:57am
Scraps:

And I really like Courvoisier & Feldman, too, the way they cross from jazz to classical and back.

You know they’re married?
  1:58am
markr:

Thank you Bop. Every time I do these midnight shifts I find myself getting hungry, and inevitably, somebody writes about food. Last time it was guacamole or salsa or something somebody was making. Those pecan cashew cookies sound goooood.
  1:59am
markr:

I did NOT know they're married. WFMU, where the listeners are better-informed than the DJs!

FYI: Motian is pronounced "Motion," as in movement

Sorry to be that guy. I adored his work, saw him perform numerous times, and whistle his compositions as I putter around the house.

Thanks for a lovely program.
  2:55am
markr:

That's what I thought, Mark, then I heard his name pronounced the other way by some stage announcer on some live album and I thought, "Well, he must know what he's talking about."
  2:57am
markr:

Hey thanks for tuning in, I know there are always a lot more listeners than commenters, so thanks to all of you for listening. Jesse and I just made a handshake deal for me to come back and fill in for him in a couple of weeks, so--it's not set in stone yet, but look for me again later this month maybe probably. Have a great rest of your week, everybody!

NPR says: His surname is Armenian, and is often mispronounced "Moe-tee-un;" however, Paul Motian pronounced it "MO-shun."

Thanks for that Charlie Haden track. I had a dear friend who was on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War (VALB) and in Havana during the Cuban Missle Crisis. Made me recall her spirit, thank you!
