My dear daughter got dropped off at college yesterday, too. The difference is, my wife did the dropping (and driving). I stayed home. It "just worked out that way."

Huh. Was that better for you?

I can't say I haven't minded driving 922 miles over the Labor Day weekend. But I would rather have been there to see her off. I couldn't take Friday off from work, so here I sit.

Uncle Michael:

I'm really enjoying it. I'm not quite finished with it. It's fun watching the filmmakers try not-very-hard to dance around what a dickhead Bill Monroe was. They pretend Monroe was proud of his alumni...but get around to him keeping Flatt & Scruggs off the Opry for as long as he could. They get to Monroe not allowing New Grass Revival back to Bean Blossom a second time. It looks like they may not include the way he fucked over Jimmy Martin. Still...digging the film.

Hello! From Griffith Park
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am
Jeff Golick:

My recent documentary viewing has been limited to things that make me want to crawl into a cave and be done with it: The Family, on Netflix, about a non-official religious org in DC that been involved in...a lot...of US politics; and The Great Hack, also Netflix, about Cambridge Analytica, though only scratching the surface (It seemed to me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @chresti! How goes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
Doug Schulkind:

Finally watched the Joe Frank doc Somewhere Out There. A must-watch for radio true believers. Got proud all over again for WFMU's committment to airing Joe's work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Jeff Golick:

Is that streaming somewhere, @Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
It's available on Amazon and a few other places.

Uncle Michael:

Till they made Irwin stop, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Doug Schulkind:

Joe's widow, Michal, is being protective of an asset that is hers. Can't begrudge her. But WFMU was airing Joe Frank episodes long long before Irwin made it a regular feature on his show. All credit to Ken Freedman for recognizing Joe's genius (Ken makes a very brief cameo in the documentary) and working out a deal that permitted WFMU to air Joe's programs even though we were not an NPR affiliate (and my impression is we were not paying anything close to what the affiliates were paying) to do so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
Doug Schulkind:

KCRW honcho (and head wacko Ruth Seymour) gets a lot of credit for bringing Joe to LA and giving him a home. And thank sweet bejeebus that she rejected Ken Freedman when he applied for KCRW's morning show host/music director position. I remember when Ken flew out to LA and did a week's worth of shows as a tryout. That was around '96 or so. Ruth Seymour was a public radio pioneer, but she blew it by not hiring Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jeff Golick:

Wow. Not sure I want to see the timeline that results in him getting that job...
  11:23am
Dean:

For many of us, KCRW was anathema, a mostly self-important, pretentious, cloyingly yuppie waste of broadcast spectrum. Besides, you could listen to Joe Frank on KPFK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Jeff Golick:

Quite an entrance, @Dean. Hi there.
  11:26am
Dean:

I need a trigger warning before a reference to Ruth Seymour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Doug Schulkind:

I believe it was Chris Douridas who got the job over Ken at KCRW. (Oops, sorry Dean. Trigger Warnning: Chris Douridas!)
  11:27am

That guy was insufferable.

Feedback from the near future: Had visiting family and couldn't listen until the next day, Jeff. At the end, you say you hope you have the entire alphabet next week. But this was a great show. Why not do a few weeks of just this sort, going through your files and playing the greatest hits? Maybe not in consecutive weeks, but I think they would be great shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks so much for this comment, @Listener Gregory! Really appreciate it. Self-imposed limitations can often be a help...considering it!
