I've never been the biggest Dead fan, but a few years back, as an exercise in transcending my prejudices, I listened to the first three albums and found quite a few things in there I enjoyed. I know the bootlegs are supposed to be where it's at, but baby steps.

Shit. It's a full house tonight. All the know-it-all's are here!
  12:20am
Dean:

I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am
coelacanth∅:

mariano i think the bootleg thing is based on the deadhead culture and the constant desire to relive the good times had at shows.
in my -ever so unpopular- opinion, their studio albums are generally better. no "deadhead" will say that.
...and yeah, the earlier the better. the pre-first album recordings from 1966 are incredible! (though they are live...so i contradict myself...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Nicky worked at this lunch counter around the corner from Chresti's house in Silverlake. He served me a sandwich. Nice guy.

BTW, FT and chresti, yesterday I drove from LA to Berkeley non-stop without having to pull over for gasoline. Around 10:30am, I drove from downtown LA up 5 past...Griffith Park! Thought of chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
mariano:

Didn't know about the pre-album recordings, @coelacanth∅, thanks for the tip!
  12:24am
Agent Peter:

The shows and the albums two totally different things. The free form nature of each show had special appeal, especially if you were there. But even if you weren't there and had been to enough shows you could listen to it differently than assessing it in a vacuum. The live shows became too formulaic in the latter years, imho
  12:25am
Dean:

I'm a fan of bootlegs qua bootlegs. Even if the studio albums are better, the archival/documentary evidence presented by arguably illegal recordings entice me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am
Franco Twinkie:

She wasn't there. We stayed inside all day. Tomorrow she starts her work week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27am
mariano:

I'm 50 now, and when I was young, dropping out for a few months or a year to follow the Dead was still an option. A couple of friends of mine did it for varying periods of time. I never saw them live, but I always liked the idea of that being an option.
Avatar 12:28am
Scraps:

I really like Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty (yeah, yeah, I know), and some of the albums back & forth, when they are songs. I really don’t like jams, and therefore don’t like live Dead albums — and that is most of what you hear lately, ad nauseum. And the people who play them play them, well, a lot, so I get really tired of them, even though I mostly like them.
  12:29am
Dean:

Those who listen to Uncle Michael's Friday morning/afternoon show (depending on where you are) know that I attended every Dead show.
  12:30am

Ha - I knew spinning a Dead number would start a conversation. I'm a BIG fan - 60s, 70s live stuff, can't get enough. But we'll be talking about post-punk soon enough???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
coelacanth∅:

i have an album -legit album but without approval of the band, called vintage dead. tied with "san francisco's grateful dead" as my favorite dead albums. apparently there's a volume 2 of vintage dead but i've never seen it.
you can feel the fire, the raw energy, something that was all but gone within a few years. and the arrangements on songs that stayed in their repertoir (sp) so so SO much better than what they turned into.
(and Bob Weir's singing was actually bearable then - even okay!)
  12:32am
Dean:

rw: You miss school on occasion.

Speaking of LA artists, does anybody know David Amico? I know his sister and her husband pretty well.

Mariano, I'm 64. When I first saw them as a 16 year old, the culture was not yet a codified thing. As a matter of fact, no one said Dead Head-ever. But sooner than later what so many people rightfully can't get past i.e. the brainless culture, started manifesting itself. For me, there were to many other options to really give a shit. Oh yeah, the sound changed forever when Keith and Donna joined the band.

One of my big mistakes: not heading out to El Monte or somewhere else in SGV in the late '70s/early '80s to hear The Fall when they seemingly randomly appeared.

The Cornhusker, or Earl's Roadhouse, something like that. Anyway, I remember not having a great time. They wouldn't let us sit at the tables if we weren't buying drinks (which we couldn't afford back then) and we couldn't lean against the walls or sit on the floor. Just had to stand on the dance floor and wait for the band, which was good, but I remember being so annoyed it kind of ruined it. I think we had to stand at least a couple hours waiting.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am
mariano:

I had this discussion online on another forum. I don't remember hearing the term post-punk till sometime in the 90s, but the person I was gabbing with said it was used back in the day. He was in the UK, so maybe the term was more prominent there?
  1:34am
rw:

coel, I remember using the term post-punk in the early '80s. And Emo was called Death Rock.
Avatar 1:35am
Scraps:

I definitely heard postpunk used by the mid80s, used to describe more arty punks, like Wire, Magazine, and yes, The Fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am
coelacanth∅:

seems like a non-distinctive distinction to me
kind of like most sub-genres there are blurry lines if lines at all; and "punk" is certainly not a time in history, which means there's no reason punk couldn't have been made after the punk era, whenever that was...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am
coelacanth∅:

so wire, which was a punk band, turned into a post-punk band?
  1:36am

Yes! But post punk could not have existed before punk!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am

coelacantho - I'm thinking post-punk started being used for in the mid 80s to differentiate bands like Killing Joke, Echo, Joy Division and the like, no? Before the noisy later 80s stuff like Big Black, Sonic Youth, etc I kinda use is as a real easy (read: lazy) term for any arty punk...

I think most of this post whatever sorting and categorizing is hilarious! I love when rock journalism uses academic tropes to give the subject some heft.

supposedly...what was claimed at the time... punk was an attitude; which was how bands like the ramones were called punk - when their music was just basic rock n roll.
so if that attitude prevailed in joy division, echo, killing joke why wouldn't it be called "punk"? and why was television and talking heads - very "arty" bands - called punk?

And Television was just rock, to me. The only reason they were described by punk was they came out in 1976-77. To me.... (shrug)

Hmmm... As I remember it, punk was reactionary at first, then got codified into a particular segment of the reaction as some bands played with a more "punk" aesthetic and others more "new wave".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am
coelacanth∅:

Scraps that's how it sounds to me too. i discovered television by buying a compilation and there was no mention of punk and i never considered it. i found out years later that they were considered punk.
...but again it was about their relatively irreverent attitude.

Yeah, I know... I don’t accept the “attitude” if I’m trying to nail down music. Then I have to know something about the band other than their music.... I mean, mostly I don’t know them, but music I can listen to

If your idea of a great rock band was Boston, The Taking Heads were just to peculiar to be anything else. It's funny how the concept punk threatened people. @Scraps: this friend of mine was (and still is!) English, and I think over there the look was more important than here. The music scenes over there, at least some of them, seem to have a real tribal element: mods, rockers, etc, and fashion was a big part of it, much like with hip hop in the US. Though to be fair, in the 80s I was a glaring example of the little wannabe punk, had to have the whole uniform. At least for a couple of years.

he Cornhusker, or Earl's Roadhouse, something like that.
