Great start Georgy. I will listen a bit and quietly sneak out somewhere this hour ;)

This takes me back to my 6th form at secondary school. A nice quiet track hehehe!

how does this sound so good?
not my chewed-up copy played on a crappy system, i guess! :-D

Alright, my lovely - you've earned a very well-deserved rest :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

Back door man? What did he mean?? lol

one of those blues tropes the kids just had to guess at.

Hey chresti! :-)
@Linda - don't think I did .... :-S

Linda Lee:

am i tripping? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Rich in Washington:

I always understood 'back door man' to really refer to a side lover who would exit out the back door when hubby came home. See 'shotgun shack'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's the power of the Flange! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think back door man is rather more ... ahem ... base than that. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember the first tiny, cheap 1940s apartments I lived in had front doors coming into the front room, and a back door out the tiny kitchen.
Avatar 4:10pm
Linda Lee:

that's a long damn flashback :-D
sorry!
Rich, that's right, but the meaning shifted a bit over time too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Right. Of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I did say that 1969 was eclectic ;-)
Avatar 4:12pm
Linda Lee:

yes! it really was.
then there was mainstream culture & then counterculture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Jan Turkenburg:

In Dutch I know this as "we'll be drinking drinking, drinking, untill we're sinking ...."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Rich in Washington:

I mean they were built in the 40s. Really tiny. Even the cockroaches were hunchbacked.
My dad helped us move in and he looked around and he said 'I think we lived here briefly in 1958'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Jan Turkenburg:

talking of obligatory weddings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

When of those places where you could lay down in the hall and look at the garden? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Rich in Washington:

We call obligatory weddings 'shotgun weddings' here in USAland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Jan Turkenburg:

In english it already sounds SO much better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I can imagine a lot of foot stomping to this :-)
Avatar 4:15pm
Linda Lee:

yes. daddy's got the gun. 'marry her or else.'
i think lots of small apartments were created after the war to help house returning vets. there was a housing shortage in the new york for sure.
Avatar 4:16pm
Linda Lee:

in new york.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I was talking about weddings I was obliged to attend as a kid and a teen in FDL :-) The weddings you reffer to we call "moetjes" (musties)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Same in the UK ... the Luftwaffe flattened quite a few housing estates! Did the US have pre-fab housing after the war, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I like the term "musties" :-)
Avatar 4:18pm
Linda Lee:

oh yes. that's when prefab developed big time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My paternal grandfather had a bomb shelter in his back garden. Fascinated me. I mean it was basically an underground brick structure, but he kept his wine in it. lol.
Avatar 4:20pm
Linda Lee:

there were kit houses before that, especially from Sears, for beginning families to afford, but the market really matured for the vets ~ & of course the GI bill enabled their return too.
Avatar 4:20pm
Linda Lee:

that's fabulous! a consistent temperature for the wine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Rich in Washington:

I do know that where I grew up, there were massive shipyards during WW2. My town was famous for its intense production of 'liberty ships', meant to run supplies through German U-Boat blockades and into allied countries.
There was a huge boom of housing construction in formerly rural areas. Some of the houses still stand. After the war here, there was suddenly a glut of houses, as most of the ship building labor moved on to more prosperous areas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There you go ;-) It's like British people on holiday - keep the beer in the hotel bidet ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Di they ever go back to building ships or was that another one of those changing times things? :-(
Avatar 4:22pm
Linda Lee:

the sensible Brits. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

This is Dave Davies' favourite Kinks' song :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Rich in Washington:

In Vancouver WA? No. Not at all. I'm not sure what the transition consisted of, but I believe ship building ceased entirely.
Then there was the whole Vanport flood tragedy in Portland across the river. A whole town built originally for WW2 shipbuilders, and in postwar years largely populated by African Americans, was completely washed away. It's only recently being talked about.
Avatar 4:26pm
Linda Lee:

lots of us here in the states first heard the Who with "Tommy". it really was big.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - that's ... shocking. Just shocking :-(
  4:28pm
Elizabeth:

This is one of my favorite Kinks songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's fabulous, isn't it? It starts off brilliantly and just keeps getting better and better :-)
Avatar 4:28pm
Linda Lee:

this nation has a lot of history that isn't 'talked about'. it's incredible.
Avatar 4:29pm
Linda Lee:

this one's new to me. it is brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - I'm so happy I played it!! :-)
Avatar 4:33pm
Linda Lee:

me too. thank you.
was just thinking of Mr. Dylan. when did he go electric & cause that uproar? was it '66?
it's easy to forget about it now, but the shift to electric instruments in popular music *as the norm* was phenomenal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I should know the answer to that ... I had the CD up for grabs during the pledge in March! lol
I *think* it was 66 ... just before his motorcycle accident. I may be wrong. Might be 65?
Avatar 4:34pm
Linda Lee:

that's the real revolution the Beatles brought on in the states ~ *and* they played their own instruments.
think of the shift between the folk revival & Woodstock. that was just a few years too.
Avatar 4:35pm
Linda Lee:

things did happen incredibly fast in those 10 years. you're right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I know! It's staggering to me how quickly everything changed from moment to moment in the 60s. Just quantum leap shifts.
Avatar 4:36pm
Linda Lee:

incredible energy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I do genuinely think that Roy Wood is nothing short of a genius
Avatar 4:37pm

Avatar 4:41pm
Linda Lee:

Rod was good in front of a rock band. what the heck happened?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think you answered your own question there ... he was great in a band. Not so much out of one ... :-)
Avatar 4:43pm
Linda Lee:

oh my gosh. this intro gives me chills. what a phenomenal record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm

god just listen..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The isolated vocals for Gimme Shelter - talk about hair standing up :-)
Avatar 4:46pm
Linda Lee:

oh my god.
Avatar 4:48pm
Linda Lee:

there's an interview with Anita Pallenberg about the film 'performance' (filmed in 69) & how it reflected the sense of doom at the end of the decade when it all came down. i think 'gimme shelter' does too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Absolutely. 1,000%. You can hear the hippie dream evaporating on quite a few songs from that year :-(
Avatar 4:49pm

do you know the brilliant quote from Hunter Thompson about the end of the era?

In 1969 you had "Trout Mask Replica"
In 1969 you had this hit my neighborhood (tho i was just a tot):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

1967 - I clearly went into a coma there. Apologies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Procol Harum started in 1967 I meant
Avatar 5:01pm
Linda Lee:

frankly, i think the Rolling Stones ended as a really vital band that year & became a business concern.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think you're pretty much right there, Linda. After Brian Jones died ... certainly something essential left them, I think.
Avatar 5:05pm
Linda Lee:

yes!! even if Brian wasn't doing well personally, he continued contributing amazing vitality to the band. Mick & Kieth just seemed to lose patience ~ at least on the surface. that Keith was allowd to fuck himself up from top to bottom while Brian had to be released on the basis of drug use, shows a basic truth about the band.
Avatar 5:06pm
Linda Lee:

& yes, they did lose something essential. probably the heart..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think there was a certain amount of soul selling, definietly. There's a poitn that Marianne Faithfull makes in her autobiography about Mick emerging from that period (jail, Performance, Altamont, Brian, etc) in a "bulletproof and shiny Mick Jagger suit, which was impenetrable"
Avatar 5:06pm
Linda Lee:

ergo, they became a business concern.
Avatar 5:07pm
Linda Lee:

wow! well written! she would know, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

She describes watching him evolve on the set of Performance and being helpless to stop it. And then of course she had her own demons to deal with ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I find it very telling that she identifies with Pirate Jenny's song so much. VERY telling.
Avatar 5:09pm
Linda Lee:

she couldn't withstand the shift, as Mick's partner & so, yes, her own demons were fed. Anita did withstand the shift (and her demons) more successfully, though probably mainly on the basis of having offered Keith children.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

We're covering some ground today! I am loving this conversation :-)
Avatar 5:11pm
Linda Lee:

Anita also took Mick as a lover during the filming.. i'm guessing that helped turn him around as well. Anita was a powerful woman, potentially quite destructive.
Avatar 5:12pm
Linda Lee:

we'd have a good chat in person, GG. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think that Anita was built more for the times. Definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

We certainly would :-)

i think i've been fascinated with these women for as long as i've been fascinated with the Stones. even moreso, now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm

Same :-)
I have on my reading list a book called, I think, "Girls Who Wore Black". All about the Beat Women. I'm slowly unearthing history :-)

One of my first significant partners dedicated this Al Stewart track to me. lol
Avatar 5:16pm

Avatar 5:17pm
Linda Lee:

read a book called 'how i became hettie jones'? about the white wife of leroi jones (later amiri baraka) & how the personal changes he underwent over time had to separate them. the beginning of their relationship in post-war new york is so beautifully described. the period seems really lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There is something about late 40s to mid-ish 50s New York that I find utterly magical, revolutionary, and fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My fave Bee Gees songs. It is so beautiful and sad.
Avatar 5:19pm

there's also a beautiful book out there called 'for love of ray', by bonnie bremser, wife of poet ray bremser.
wasn't this from 'odessa'? i still remember my uncle's red velvet copy :-)

@Hopey - I still have moments where I forget ... and then it hits me again. Plus he died about three weeks before my best friend. And then the whole of 2016 and the clusterfuck that it became unfolded :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - I can imagine how wonderful those moments were :-) <3
Avatar 5:24pm
Linda Lee:

yes, isn't it wild .. a song about someone entering other realms & refusing to return marks the end of a time when so many went so far.
i'm so sorry, GG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Wow. Only one more set to go! Less songs but longer ones :-)
Just as a heads' up - the penultimate and final songs of this week's show are VERY long so if you need to put the kettle on, run to the loo, etc ... ;-)
Avatar 5:27pm
Linda Lee:

after certain things i've experienced over time, i don't believe anyone who passes on leaves us totally. the changes they inspire in our lives remain part of us, so they also do. we're not without them.

@Linda - I believe that too <3

Thank you, CC! :-) I'm so glad you enjoyed it :-)
Avatar 5:33pm

the american drug war was *devised* to disrupt the counterculture & i'm sure it was the same in the UK. so suddenly you have 'problems' when another approach might have been followed, with greater benefit for all.

Linda Lee:

we see how well it's all worked out now.

That's it, LL. Too intimate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
