I am listening to you as I pack up a truck with 50-100 year old electronics, hopefully to drive 175 miles and sell them to other people. Handling lots of used consumer goods gives an interesting perspective on the meanings of quality and utility. Some of this stuff is still quite useful and just about all of it is more durable than modern issue. But to what end? Eventually it all passes on. It's too easy in this situation to overlook the fact that it is essentially used junk which hopefully once served an important purpose for someone and gave him or her pleasure. I collect old records, I drive an old truck and I have a beard. I sometimes wonder if I am a hipster. Yet I collect the records because I like them-- I drive the truck because it cost $600 five years ago. The Sansui receiver you are modulating was a garbage find years ago and gives good service. There is so much fat in the land that scavenging goods can give a satisfactory standard of living if one doesn't mind a little wear and tear. I have mixed feelings: the waste that exists in the world saddens me a great deal. But if a lot more people became as frugal as I am, well, it would be a lot harder to do my gleaning. I wonder if maybe my satisfaction with being frugal gives me a secret smugness: maybe doing things because I want to, and not because of the crowd puts me the most exclusive club, a club of one. Maybe it's the most hipster thing of all.

It's really a shame, his show is consistently 2 hours and 55 minutes of excellence and then one massive black spot of pathetic shame every week, but with clicky-star fraudulence to add insult to injury. Boycotting this fake race to the top is the only way to go. It's like valuing movies based on what gets the most box office returns... in China.

I am listening to you as I pack up a truck with 50-100 year old electronics, hopefully to drive 175 miles and sell them to other people. Handling lots of used consumer goods gives an interesting perspective on the meanings of quality and utility. Some of this stuff is still quite useful and just about all of it is more durable than modern issue. But to what end? Eventually it all passes on. It's too easy in this situation to overlook the fact that it is essentially used junk which hopefully once served an important purpose for someone and gave him or her pleasure. I collect old records, I drive an old truck and I have a beard. I sometimes wonder if I am a hipster. Yet I collect the records because I like them-- I drive the truck because it cost $600 five years ago. The Sansui receiver you are modulating was a garbage find years ago and gives good service. There is so much fat in the land that scavenging goods can give a satisfactory standard of living if one doesn't mind a little wear and tear. I have mixed feelings: the waste that exists in the world saddens me a great deal. But if a lot more people became as frugal as I am, well, it would be a lot harder to do my gleaning. I wonder if maybe my satisfaction with being frugal gives me a secret smugness: maybe doing things because I want to, and not because of the crowd puts me the most exclusive club, a club of one. Maybe it's the most hipster thing of all.
