Hello Doug. A new copy of Lal Waterson's Teach Me To Be A Summer's Morning just arrived. Thirza was the first song played. Oh boy, especially as we lost a cat on the road outside the other week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Listener Scott:

John Cohen was one of my photo professors in art school. Nicest guy in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Scott
He was a visual arts prof at SUNY Purchase for 30+ years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Glorious tidings to you, Maggie B, and to Sem, too!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:11am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Listener Scott:

That's where I went, yeah. He was an institution already. I was there 86-90.
Avatar 9:12am Creature Boy ( Miles ):

The New Lost City Ramblers were mentioned in the Ken Burns documentary
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13am Uncle Michael:

Robert Hunter does not deny that Mr. Cohen was "Uncle John". He didn't precisely confirm, either...but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Creature Boy ( Miles )
And a number of Cohen's photos were licensed for Burns's Country documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
The claim that John Cohen is "Uncle John" and that the New Lost City Ramblers was "Uncle John's Band" has been called a "true rumor." The song mentions a number of songs performed widely by the NLCR. I elevate the rumor to myth and leave it at that. (We will be hearing more later.)
Avatar 9:15am Creature Boy ( Miles ):

I see! I didn't realize much of this
  9:16am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Yes yes yes, Gina.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:34am Sem:

Let's just say, ausmanx, that the federal Liberal party foisted 2 ill-chosen party leaders on Canadaians over a decade, waiting for 1) Trudeau to reach a minimally-acceptable age for a national leader, and 2) while the far right Conservative Party dismantled a lot of "social democratic" policy errors and thereby change fundamentally how Canada was seen beyond it borders. Mr. Trudeau is not the man his father was, ahem.
  9:37am Listener Gregory:

Is that John Cohen in the bottom picture too? He achieved the look I have been shooting for my entire life.

“There is a saying that the treasures of the universe may be found between the eyes of a horse. One could say that the treasures of the earth may be found between the eyes of John Cohen. For we find in the images offered by this humble man, the wisdom of simplicity—its music, and its silence.”

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39am Sem:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39am Brian in UK:

@ausmanx, never been a big Dead fan but Workingmans and American Beauty are excellent perhaps with the success of the Band they briefly moved in that direction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am coelacanth∅:

good morning Doug and all
  10:42am Marie:

Just reading the comments. Doug, I want to hear your "Ken Burns Jazz"! Funny.
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

My semantic network is convulsing with this change in musical direction.
Avatar 10:44am still b/p:

Back and forth between here where Dead mentions are flurrying and an article just reading by chance that reports Robert Hunter's first LSD came from CIA's MK ULTRA project.
Eyes quick-brushing across Larry's comment thought it said Touch of Gray made him WANT to jump off a train!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

Hi, hi there. I've been here a while, but just had to catch up on all the reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, coelacanth∅! Groovings, Marie!

Marie, my WFMU marathon premium many years ago was a compilation I called Jazz Burns Ken. It was my outraged response to Burns's completely ignoring the world of jazz beyond U.S. borders. It's subtitle was "The World 'Jazz' Forgot" ("Jazz" referring to Burns's documentary)

Someone actually posted it on Discogs: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Please to read you, Jeff Golick!
  10:48am Listener Gregory:

Little known that Roscoe Holcomb and Misha Mengelberg became good friends. When they got together they would sing Sinatra songs around the fireplace.
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

wow, such lineup, such wow!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

I note, with some optimism, that the Jazz Burns Ken compilation is subtitled "Episode One."

Ahem.
Avatar 🥁 10:50am βrian:

So does he cover non-U.S. country music in the latest doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

I heard they were singing Lotte Lenya songs, Listener Gregory, but BOTH COULD BE TRUE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Yeah, I did leave that dangling, didn't I? That was 17 freaking years ago. (That's a lot of dangle.)
  10:52am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, there is much in this world that we will never know.
Avatar 10:52am northguineahills:

@Doug: and that was just one of many flaws in that doc. I'm pretty sure once he gets past Hank Williams, it will be shite in the Country doc, but so far it's been inclusive a bit more and mentioned bios of minor characters. Not confident he's able to ingest constructive criticism.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55am Brian in UK:

I do a lot of things in jest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
Oh god, the depths of my loathing for Ken Burns's "Jazz" documentary (and, frankly, most of his two-dimensional pablum) knows no nadir.

I thank Ken Burns for his service in digging up and sharing some incredible imagery.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55am Funky16Corners:

Burns seems to labor under the assumption that a good documentarian can make a good documentary about anything they set their mind to. One would assume that someone with a real affinity for the subject matter (at least in a documentary of a historical nature) would have an affinity for the subject matter.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am Funky16Corners:

I meant to type, 'you would need someone with a real affinity..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

  10:58am Listener Gregory:

Pharaoh Sanders is fortunately still with us. Could WFMU persuade him to record a song, "You've Got to Have Freeform"? Think what a thank-you gift that would be.

@Listener Gregory

  11:08am Listener Gregory:

Being a Sanders , I tired many years ago of correcting the additional 'u'.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:09am Brian in UK:

I will settle for Brain as an upgrade though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Listener Scott:

I'm enjoying the Ken Burns country music documentary but I do get a real sense that he's coming to the subject as an outsider.

Still, even at 16 hours he's bitten off far more than he can chew; I mean, any documentary purporting to cover such a broadly-stated topic is going to suffer from editorial shallowness.

Still, I'm learning stuff I didn't know along the way and watching some amazing footage. So I'm basically okay with it. I don't sense that there's a danger he's having an adverse impact on the history of the subject, but I could be wrong because it's not really my subject matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Listener Scott:

I suspect I'll be less tuned in to the Burns documentary when we get to, say, the Barbara Mandrell years.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:10am Brian in UK:

Barbara Mandrell, petite but perfectly formed,.
  11:11am Listener Gregory:

@Scott, I look forward to hearing Taylor Swift talk about how her mama used to sing Barbara Mandrell to her in the crib.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

I love your descriptions, Gina. Makes me wanna listen EVEN MORE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Hugo:

Thanks for the extended John Cohen set which featured a lot of acapella folk music. I'm reading Jonathan Coe's "Middle England" at the moment and in the first chapter there is a reference to a tune sung by an unaccompanied Shirley Collins with quotes from the lyrics. I think it must be "Adieu to old England" which was the title tune of an album released on Topic in 1974. Would love to hear it, so that's a request, Doug.
