Favoriting October 13, 2019: Singtime sing-a-long songs and stories

The Friendly Persuaders are back and it's a happening this week on the show.

Sister Krys teleports from WFMU in the year 1986 to share with us Subgenius Rants. Yes, these vintage vignettes can be had today (or triple your money back). The world ends tomorrow and you may, die?

Remember that time your dear host had a show titled "Whiz Bam" on CBC Radio 1 coast-to-coast every Sunday morning in 2007? Of course you don't, cause it never made it off the pilot room floor. Ah, but such sweet memories shall not fall into the sands of time. Let's relive both a demo recording for CBC (theme, home recordings) and the full length pilot (theme, Industrial Musicals) featuring phone interviews with Jonathan Ward and Dick Boyall (of Allied's 'Music to Move Families By' fame)! There's 40 minutes of your life you won't get back sucker!

B.C. Sterrett dusts off Denovangelis, a thrift store cassette found in Ogden, Utah. Let's listen to over 10 minutes of "Unity for all God's Children". Together.

Let's welcome back Archivist Viv! On this show we have, 'The Sounds of Meloncore' featuring 5 gems by Anthony Fantano from 2009!

The very wonderful Sonofabitch went on a cross country jaunt in 2005, riding the rails and recording 5 hours of her travels on a pocket recorder. Today we will hear the start of her journey arriving in Reno from San Francisco. You will hear your host a bit sloshed on wine along with a small cast and crew of Reno locals, wishing her well from an Amtrak platform, and embarking on her journey to Maine, moving through the majestic state of Utah. Today's recording is part 1 of 5 in the 'Cross Country Travelogue' series.

... and featuring the usual hodge-podge of singtime-sing-a-long songs.

A big round of applause for our sponsors this week: Kools, Circus Nuts, American Iron & Steel Institute, Colt 45 Malt Liquor, and Taystee Bread. No really, not really, so really.

amazing weather here in the catskills. feels summery, as the leaves fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm

We're fully in Fall mode here. It's pretty cool and the leaves are all turning. I think I'm gonna give the lawn their final mow for the season today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Kat in Chicago:

Leaves are still green here, but the temps dropped suddenly in the last few days. Our radiators came on briefly on Friday and I wish they'd come back on again.
Avatar 2:27pm
Linda Lee:

i'm just about to do the same, Rich!
i guess you're in an apartment, Kat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Kat in Chicago:

I am. Building is a hundred years or so old. Windows are pretty new so it's not as drafty as the some of the others I've lived in, but it's still kind of chilly.
Avatar 2:31pm
Linda Lee:

& no thermostat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Kat in Chicago:

Nah, one is at the mercy of one's landlord in Chicago buildings such as these. The first two years I lived here it was actually overheated. Last year it started off super cold, but after repeated texts to the owner he finally got it properly adjusted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
Kat in Chicago:

I didn't know Canadians had a Thanksgiving holiday at all! How is Halloween in Montreal, Otis? I find it boring in Chicago, honestly. I actually went to NYC that weekend last year. Bushwick on Halloween is pretty cute.
Avatar 2:38pm
Linda Lee:

glad to hear that.
it's the same in nyc, generally. not many options aside of electric heaters to supplement.
Avatar 2:40pm
Linda Lee:

always had fun in nyc on hallowe'en, 70s - 90s. nightlife, parties, parade!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yeah I had one really bad landlord heating-wise when I lived in Manhattan in the 90s. And one place with electric baseboard heat which was mostly worthless.
Avatar 2:43pm
Otis Fodder:

Hi Kat and Rich!!
Avatar 2:45pm
Linda Lee:

even under the best conditions baseboard heat isn't very efficient..
Avatar 2:46pm
Linda Lee:

people don't like living in the same building as the landlord, but you get proper heat if you do.
Avatar 2:46pm
Otis Fodder:

Old building here and baseboard heaters. Keep blankets and space heaters handy.
Avatar 2:48pm
Linda Lee:

absolutely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Kat in Chicago:

I think I'm going to get off the couch and do some housey things while this is on. Perhaps the activity will warm me up.
Avatar 2:49pm
Otis Fodder:

Really worthless heat... quite often I throw plastic up over the windows and that helps. Thankfully the landlord put in new front windows 2 years back so no more drafts there... just drafts on the old wood cracks from floor to wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
Kat in Chicago:

I hate putting up plastic but I've had to do it a lot of places.
Avatar 2:53pm
Linda Lee:

here's a tip for window plastic: bubble wrap! that little layer of air really makes a difference. just wet the glass a little & static keeps it up.

hi Viv! bubble wrap window insulation. you can get it in rolls & cut to fit.

Kat, if you decide to go for it i'd recommend the bigger bubbles. just figure out how much glass you have to cover & order a big enough roll. presto. done!
Avatar 3:12pm
Archivist Vivian:

I should be working on my new album right now tbh but I haven't tuned in in who knows how long. I'll probably do this until I get picked up to go to work where I must scare people.

PS Otis, if you have time in the future for me to do TWO segments, I'd also love to do another one with either gems from my Daniel Johnston archives, or possibly some of the most strange music in my collection (That'll be really hard to pick out)
Avatar 3:14pm
Otis Fodder:

Do it, looking forward. I'll play 'em!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Kat in Chicago:

Do you have a Halloween-related job function, Viv, or is scaring people always part of your job? :)
Avatar 3:15pm
Linda Lee:

last bubble wrap tip: i found it really made a difference last winter. i have single pane windows! just spray a little water directly on the glass & press the plastic on lightly. it should hold for the season, unless the air goes super dry.
Avatar 3:15pm
Linda Lee:

then you just spray a little more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Kat in Chicago:

oh, spraying water would be soooo much more easy than struggling with duct tape.
Avatar 3:16pm
Archivist Vivian:

I work at a haunted asylum. I scare people. this year my 'character' is me singing atonally or just singing in general, odd songs.
Avatar 3:16pm
Linda Lee:

the water lets us use the plastic over again, too. forget the tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Kat in Chicago:

That sounds like fun, Viv!

I brought my casiotone on Friday night. It didn't work as well as the ukulele because I couldn't get people to leave the room as quick. They'd stay in there listening to me play whatever.

Funny, just last night I was going through my bookshelf pulled out my old Subgenius books, and saw I had a one-off comic book "Bob's favorite Comics" (or something like that.) Looked it up, turns out it's quite the collector's item, going for three figures nowadays. Hope to sell off some of my collectibles soon, praise Bob!

It's a compilation of music by people with mental illnesses etc. Myself and almost every musician I'm friends with has some sort of mental ailment so we've got a bit on there. The two best home made tape finds I had were: A recording of what sounded like a musical rehearsal about Shakespeare's The Tempest from the 70s (it was a big hit on reddit, it's spooky and mystical) and it also had recordings of a woman who sounded like she was imitating Joan Baez
Avatar 4:19pm

when i lived in asheville i found them all the time. just amazing thrift stores ~ nickels, dimes, quarters.
Avatar 4:19pm

The other one was of a church organ performance played by "A Professional" as the written cover put it. The best part about that tape is when the churchgoers sing, the lady holding the cassette player sings very off key, it's really endearing and sweet.

Otis, that Massey-Ferguson spot sounds like it was sung by the same guy who did the PSA for occupational safety about getting all your fingers cut off. One Finger Joe? Something like that.

Dunno if you remember, Otis, but there was show on Radio 23 called Shake Hands With Danger. I think the hosts name was Scott and I believe he originated out of Texas.

These shows are great, Otis! Do you have the complete episodes up somewhere?

BC Sterrett:

Ever since that Bathtubs Over Broadway documentary, I've had people ask if I'd sell my "Bathrooms Are Coming" lp.

Otis Fodder:

Ahhh, never got picked up. Almost, but main reason was lack of Can Content on each show. Just the demo and Pilot exist, but I have written scripts and topics for 11 additional episodes... thinking I should enact those in time.

Darn that Can Con!

We had an AM rock station,KFWB that in 1967 that would play a flower power version of the jingle from a local grocery store chain: Every Day's A Special Day At Thrifty Mart. After which the stoned DJ would talk about canned peaches and cottage cheese.
