Just finished up some work and tangenting with Larry via email about Rod Stewart and my dad and model trains.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
melinda:

I did a Rod Stewart search and the model train story popped up. Who would have thought?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Those items are all connected in my comment. Rod Stewart is a former customer of my dad’s. He used to restore model trains in the 60s-80s. He had a side business selling trains at train shows in my youth and earlier.

Little Danny:

Sorry, having a few tech/cat related issues behind the scenes but I think it's all good now!

Hello everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m assuming Danny that you have the Diabolik soundtrack off a bootleg CD as it’s never been issued.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Little Danny:

Weird set. I played the Roedelius twice by accident.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
chresti:

Is the cat trying to occupy the turntable?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
chresti:

That's funny, didn't notice. No wonder I enjoyed it so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

Nope, but she just jumped on my streaming computer, and then mixer. How do they know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

I am SCORPIO oh wait I mean SPARTACUS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

@Matt: yep, just the bootleg for me, too. There was a 45 issued in connection with the movie and I do have that

Cathode Ray Tubes would get warm. That’s why the put a case around the them and had plenty of vents.

That's a deep well, Melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

Not for me because I never start. I’m not sure if my distaste of cats started before my allergies developed or if that just amplified my previously existing feelings.

still b/p:

I had to ask someone 16 years younger if as a child she experienced the old center screen dot upon TV turn-off. CRTs stopped doing that long before they left the home technology scene, but I don't remember when -- gone by 70s?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

the traffic sound clearly more influenced by cream's version than by the original...do you know when that's from Danny?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
coelacanth∅:

s b/p we always had old, second-hand sets so we still had dots into the 70s
  10:45pm
Dean:

I'm toying with acquiring a 222 CD box set of the "complete" (whatever that means) works of Bach, curated by folks for Deutsche Gramophon. I don't think I'll live long enough to listen to all of it, but the reviews are over the top. What do you all think? Go for it? (Which means my kids won't eat for a couple days a week or a few weeks...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Little Danny:

@coel: '69, I believe, on the Traffic Sound
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

thanks danny that makes perfect sense.
excellent version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Little Danny:

I can never fully commit to a large box set.

222 is a large number of CDs.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean just tell your kids you're all doing a family fast, for your health.
  10:49pm
Dean:

Same for me. I've managed 36.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
coelacanth∅:

my biggest "box set" is a 36-disc set of Benny Goodman.
- 7-inch, 33rpm, 4 songs per disc.
one's missing.
  10:52pm
Dean:

My 36 is recorder music. I have a 24 of Sun Ra in Detroit, too.
  10:53pm
Dean:

This Loved Ones sounds quite a bit like Flamin' Groovies' Shake Some Action...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Little Danny:

I wish one could buy the liner notes only from some of these box sets and lavish reissues
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
doctorjazz:

Hello in there.
  10:55pm
Dean:

Correction: the Sun Ra is 28 disks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Little Danny:

Le Good Docteur! Hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Little Danny:

@Dean: Nice! I hadn't noticed that
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i have some 78s in books, not boxes, in sets of maybe 6? -8? records. other than that my biggest box sets max out at 4 cds.(unless you count triple and quintuple (?) albums -which you shouldn't)
  10:57pm
Dean:

I once wrote a paper about liner notes, which I believe are not given their due.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
melinda:

I was born in 1971 and don't remember the TV dot.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
melinda:

We had a little color Sony, I remember it fondly.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

in grade school when they put me in a "special" reading class the inciteful teacher figured out i could read just fine if you put album liner notes before me.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

the black & white sets had a much more pronounced diminishing dot, if i remember correctly
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
WR:

The DGG Bach set is going to have a lotta cantata content. Numerous oratorios as well. Something to consider, for me if they did volumes separately I would pass on the vocal volumes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Little Danny:

'73 born and I definitely remember the little green dot!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
doctorjazz:

I Love getting boxes, the COMPLETE ANYTHING! I always had a hard time actually getting to listen and absorb them all (3 discs seems to be the Max I can actually get a handle on), and,as I get older, I seem even less able to (think I'm suffering from the general decline in attention the internet has created). (Or, early onset dementia...)
  11:03pm
Dean:

I'm most fond of Bach's solo keyboard work, but the vocal works grab me, too. The cantatas, of course, but also the masses. Good god, the masses.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
coelacanth∅:

there are other box sets i'd like, besides the 5-6 that i have, but i rarely can justify spending the money.
  11:05pm
Dean:

What do you mean by "justify," coel? Is that a step I should be taking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was spoiled for years as I had friends that worked at Sony legacy and they’d get me whatever I wanted. I used to go to the now former Sony building on Madison Ave every few months and I’d bring a bag with me to fill up with music and then have to put other stuff on top in case the security wanted to look at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Little Danny:

Jazz box sets can be tricky, too. Lots of inferior outtakes in a row.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
coelacanth∅:

...i'd like those king crimson boxes from the Bruford era with 20-something cds in each, partly because my records are pretty beat-up so i'd like new copies anyway.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
chresti:

At one point, we had one for sound, and one for the picture, both used, b+w tv sets
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean, no, sorry - that was a typo
  11:09pm
Dean:

I'm with you, coel. I almost went for the Red box, but as we "discussed" last night, I can't handle Wetton's insufferable vocals, so I passed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Little Danny:

@chresti: stacked next to each other?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
chresti:

Wow Ventures are vibrating!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

haha chresti i forgot but we had that arrangement too for a little while!

Dean -still those sets -rehearsals and such must be enlightening
  11:12pm
Dean:

Absolutely. Would love to hear them.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
chresti:

Each was placed on either side of the couch, as I recall. The tv set up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Little Danny:

@chresti: Indeed! Underrated psychedelia!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
doctorjazz:

A friend who used to work at ASCAP and had 10,000 CDs recently moved from a house to a Manhattan apartment, and,to downsize, ripped then all to an elaborate hard drive system, redundant secure. He donated most of them to FMU (I helped set it up), but a got maybe 200 discs before they got picked up. His drive crashed, the redundancy didn't redund (no back up), and he lost the music. I have a bunch of stuff he sent me over the past few years that I burned on a portable drive to send him. Very sad...
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
doctorjazz:

Dean, go for it, you know you need to (better for everyone at home to slim down anyway).
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
chresti:

Maybe he can get some from the archives? @doc
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
doctorjazz:

Did get a bunch of boxes in that exchange, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Little Danny:

This Curtis Liggins is a top ten soul 45 for me
  11:17pm
Dean:

I have on the order of 10k+ records, LPs and CDs, and increasing. I'll never rip/stream (unless Linn gives me their gear). As it turns out, I don't much like music. I like playing records.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
doctorjazz:

Nah, Chresti, they all got put on eBay for sale for FMU.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
chresti:

Never heard this before, the indications.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Little Danny:

I've listened to that 45 so many times, Chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Do you have the numero group curtis liggins repress?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
doctorjazz:

I haven't counted in a while, but must be somewhere in that 8-10 K range of albums and CDs. Also have a few TB high resolution digital stuff. Like to listen to it all, over speakers, through headphones, whatever is convenient at the moment.
  11:23pm
Dean:

No headphones for me, as we've discussed, doctorjazz. I don't like the feel, and I don't like the sonics.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
WR:

Damn Dean you've got me considering the 333 Bach set...
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
doctorjazz:

Neil Young's now discontinued Pono Player (made by Ayre) is a nice sounding portable way to listen to digital high resolution music (or even regular digital files)
Avatar 11:25pm
still b/p:

When it gets to the 666 set, money is not the payment the "retailer" wants.
  11:25pm
Dean:

Buy it! Please! Buy it! It's a curated assortment of performances from multiple labels, with commentary from Christoph Wolff! Once in a (your or my) lifetime!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
doctorjazz:

The delivery folks will curse you when they bring the Bach.
  11:27pm
Dean:

I didn't know that Pono was connected to Ayre. A couple of my buddies have Ayre gear. I never got the attraction.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
WR:

Doctorjazz, that outcome of hard drives is sad and somewhere between absurd and insane. Hope the tax write off for the FMU donation was of substance.

I'm Sure it was, WR, trying to recover some of the music now. (The Henry Threadgill box was out of his collection, though I do have it all, except the 1 previously unreleased disc, on vinyl. But....it is COMPLETE!)
