Yet there is a positive side to google knowing all about me: very ambiguous searches do come up with tour date for bands. Duck Duck Go doesn't find these. And I guess my search history is so specific that google doesn't bother showing me adds anymore

me, i'd prefer they didn't, if i can pick up the slack myself ~ ony because there's absolutely no way of knowing how your tracking information is being used & by whom. all *kinds* of folks who are interested in how you think & will pay to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
coelacanth∅:

oh and @10.11 it's a great discovery. it's always come out in bits but over the last couple of years i've heard so much way-the-fuck out there music from far away lands, a lot of which was made decades ago, when my mind imagined such an ocean (pun intended!) between our worlds.

it's not what you buy, for example, but how. behavioral stuff. the way you make connections & process information. the way you communicate & with whom..
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:33am

My take is using/training google for music/work searches, and using Duck Duck Go for more personal things. I get tailored results when I need them (though I still haven't managed to get google to give me info about the Korean/Japanese band 01)

Oh and earlier you were all talking about Chinese jazz players too bad there is the Great Wall of China that you can’t hear stations like this

Linda Lee: worry not, if we go over the edge it's usually a soft landing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jeff Golick:

I may be wrong about that, @WR, as this Maupin was also recorded in NYC so who knows. Those very early ECMs were not overseen by Either, I believe; he was given tapes.

ah! so it's safe to jump out early!

Linda Lee @11:03, more problematic is that it appears driverless but several major forces are trying to control and are eyeing us as potential fuel rather than passengers.

For a while I regularly annoyed DJs asking them to name who engineered their live sets. Until one influential DJ told me it was disrespectful to DJs, and to stop or else, so I stopped
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Jeff Golick:

That is lame, @fred. Unusual, too, in my experience, as most DJs I know are all too eager to credit the engineer.
Avatar 11:16am
Linda Lee:

'stop or else' ..? who's in charge here, Al Capone? :-D
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

so we disrespect engineers instead? huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am

(to be clear: lame that you were told it was disrespectful.)

@GST: I think you can tell the most crucial jobs by how you only notice them when they mess up. Like foundation, you expect them to be there, until they're not, and then you're in trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, ECM is sort of squeezing out my planned Roswell Rudd nod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am
Jeff Golick:

@fred/@GST: I'm a book editor. I brought home a book I'd worked on recently, and showed by daughter. She asked, "Is your name in it?" When I said no, she lost all interest.

I believe Stork will be paying tribute to the “ECM sound” on the Stork Club, coming up next on the Drummer Stream.

Damnit Jeff, you and the GTD stream commentors have done it again, I had planned to finish some work reports this morning and while I'm reading the NYT obit the wife says, when are we going to start making lunch and my work laptop was never opened. Another lovely Sunday morning with D:O.

I hadn't heard he passed (what happens when you sleep in, just saw the obit).
It's interesting how things/opinions change over time. The ECM sound, now pretty much universally praised, earlyon was criticized often for being "dry".
