There is one piece of graffiti from that era still left, which is amazing in 2019. It's even older than Punk. Because it's high up on a railway bridge and really inaccessible, it's managed to evade the modern era. It's faded but still clearly legible, 'Reds Out, Vietnam!" It ought to be listed for historic interest really.

You may be too young to remember that Carter was as flawed as any other president. His actions provoked the rise of the dictatorship in Iran. Mortgage rates rose to almost 19%. Carter came out in support of the murderous Khmer Rouge after Vietnam invaded Cambodia to stop the slaughter there. Jimmy‘s brother was an agent for Libya. His charity work is probably known better to you and your contemporaries.

Huh. OK. Killing Joke were pretty big when I first got into punk so they kind of always loom large for me, that their currency has gone down some doesn't surprise that much I guess. But J&M Chain were so revered by the people who loved hair in college but were scared of The Birthday Party I figured they had held steady. I've never taken FNM that seriously. That first ep and Ha! 10" were really big (for me) and then MTV played the "Eighties" video all the time, it kind of looked they were going to break out for a minute there, but they were just so weird...

The first time I heard J&M Chain's "Upside Down" on a friend's blaster I was quite taken with it. In practically no time I was at a party on Ball State campus that had huge posters of them on the wall and hair envy discussions were going on ("if you could have any one's hair who would it be. Oh, the guy in Jesus and Mary Chain" etc)
