DIY music for the spirit; bummer jams for happy people; terrestrial music for space travelers; punchy, post-punk jitters, synth drones for the mindful; fuzz-drenched, basement rock to sooth the soul...

Strong vitamins indeed. OK if there's no Dead tonight Tom. On a previous planet Jeff had two shows, one entirely Dead based, the other called Just Music - not unlike Marcel's What Was Music, was the one I preferred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

i've always thought that Brian Eno was a mostly abstainer of drugs, and that part of the reason he didn't want to tour with roxy music (and beyond) was that he didn't want to treat his body so poorly.
maybe i'm mistaken; but then there's no reason to assume coke or any drug at all was necessary to perform in an unusually energetic way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
TomDash:

Aitch...I LOVE the Dead (60s and 70s), but I will not be playing any this eve...

Well, Vaughn Oliver (the house design at 4AD) passed away today. Wonder if there are any extended 4AD tracks that would fit in this show.

Dean:

Let me promote a label/record store in Portland, Oregon, Beacon Sounds. Some marvelous electronically treated noodling. Was there the day after Christmas.

Love the Dead. Ween? Really? People like them? Eno and Pere Ubu I dismiss entirely. To my ear, zero talent.
  10:46pm
JakeGould:

@coelacanth: Sounds similar to Walter de Maria who was drummer for Lou Reed and John Cale’s pre-Velvet Underground band before he decided to ditch the rock life for art: “I said to myself, do I want to go to rehearsal every day and every night, you know, take all these drugs?” www.independent.co.uk...

was that not Cale?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

...i think it was Cale, but wikipedia just says "arrangements: John Cale"
  10:58pm
steveL:

He produced, so, probably yes.

made me get the album out, cd reissue:
"Nico: vocals, harmonium;
John Cale: electric viola, piano, bass, electric guitar, glockenspiel, bells, mouth organ, bosun's pipe"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
TomDash:

Yeah coelacantho - Cale stayed close with Nico and arranged most of her solo LPs up until "The End" I believe. Such beautiful music when the 2 of them collaborated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

Jake it's funny how in that article it says "forsook a career with the velvet underground" - when velvet underground really didn't have much of a career!
...i guess it's easy for people now who only know of the band as "influential" or "ahead of it's time" to neglect that hardly anyone liked VU at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

i agree Tom...and i really don't like her singing much - but those arrangements; and the haunting quality of her voice was perfect for it (and her lyrics, obviously)
  11:28pm
JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: Yeah, the way things are portrayed are always “coulda, shoulda, woulda” because — let’s face it — even the most accurate music and art writing is still gossip. Nobody wants to really read about an artist as much as experience the art.

But I do like the choice between doing drugs and never having a decent day-life versus anything else.
  11:33pm
Dean:

"Nobody wants to really read about an artist as much as experience the art."

Beg to disagree. Walter Pater writes about, and I read about, artists. His work is an example of aboutness being an art in and of itself.
  11:35pm
JakeGould:

Let this mark the first time someone on the Internet has disagreed with someone else.
  11:36pm
Dean:

I disagree. This is 14,272nd time somebody has disagreed.
