Hey, this isn't YYZed.

Listener Robert:

Yesterday I came across an answer on Quora I wanted to respond to, but now can't find. Someone said a sad feature of the music biz is that it's such a buyer's market, with so much being given away that there are a lot of very good musicians (he said singers specifically) who can't make a living at it.

I look at that as a good thing. It means we're rich enough as a society that a great many of us are able to develop fairly high musical art in our spare time for our own and our friends' enjoyment, without even any hope of making money at it.
Avatar 3:20pm
Listening Out There:

@Listener Robert: Maybe that's true from the listener's point of view. Might not be a good thing for musicians, however. I once saw a musician/composer's royalty check on Facebook for 14 cents.
Avatar 3:21pm
Listening Out There:

Oh. A royalty check from Spotify, that is...
Avatar 3:21pm

I hear you Listener Robert, but until money isn't a thing anymore, musicians are consigned to a life of hardship and deprivation. That is hardly indicative of a rich society.

@brainiac, that's only if they try to go pro at music. Meanwhile people can make enough money in various lines of work that they can afford a lot of time off to practice as amateurs.

Yes, but this situation requires artists to make sacrifices in order to create. Can we conceive of a world in which people can devote themselves to their art without fear of starving to death?
Avatar 🎸 3:30pm
βrian:

Well, there's the art of cooking, anyway.
  3:30pm

We can conceive such a world for SOME of them, brainiac: this world. But that still leaves a lot of room for people who've gotten very good at it while doing something else to keep from starving to death.

Beetlemuse:

The music of today has to compete with the music from 50 years ago and up til now
Avatar 3:33pm

My point is simply this: the constraints put on musicians to make a living "doing something else" constrains their freedom to create and truncates their opportunity to become proficient.

Applying market forces to artists squelches their space to experiment, refine and produce completely original work. Inevitably what you the listener gets is a homogenized, derivative regurgitation of what has sold in the past. Commercial, not creative. That's what we're here to get away from ... at least I am, anyway :)
  3:46pm
Listener Robert:
