Interesting way to characterize the mentats. I remember their having resulted from a revulsion AGAINST machines (automated ones, at least); but did that result from an earlier REVOLT BY/OF machines?

Frank Herbert must've known about idiots savants, because the mentats were people who, thru study and practice, could switch at will into a trancelike savant state. I remember the Paul Gross character's having done that on "Due South" once.

Cl@m Digger, Melanie Thiel showed me how that works. The DJ wears headphones that carry the real time material going out, which is on a delay from what's coming off the record. The DJ is ALSO listening to it as it comes off the record. So when the DJ hears something that needs to be bleeped, the DJ memorizes the sequence of words around that, then listens to it via headphones as it goes out, and makes the cut at the appropriate time. if they're good, they can cut VERY close around it.

Mary - Bobby Gentry said in a 1967 interview ""It's in there for two reasons," she said. "First, it locks up a definite relationship between Billie Joe and the girl telling the story, the girl at the table. Second, the fact that Billie Joe was seen throwing something off the bridge – no matter what it was – provides a possible motivation as to why he jumped off the bridge the next day."

Thanks Joe .. actually, for many of us -FMU is the place we find things we never heard before... (never bought a CD/never had a player or a pod for music) After listening to people play the same cassettes/music over and over in Lo don 80s.. Once back in NYC, only listened to NEWS and FMU (KCR a bit ...) Thanks again!!!!

@DiL it was the chapter in which Duke Leto keeps repeating (in italics) ‘they have tried to take the life of my son’ which cheesed me off; next time I’ll skip that chapter. I have many fond
Memories of reading the book circa 1979 though.
