The Pink Noise Tuesday, July 28th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
The first live visit to WFMU from the mysterious Montreal combo that's
been churning out an assortment of basement synth/sci-fi/punk weirdness
over the last few years on such imprints as Kill Shaman, Almost Ready, and
Sacred Bones. Cheap Korg and Moog synths, tape recorders, drum
machines, and guitars, Suicide/Chrome love in the air. You can also catch them live on July 26th at Market Hotel in Brooklyn (playing on a bill with Gary War).
Come join WFMU on the Waterpod - space is very limited, so RSVP to Trent for (free) admission.
Ethan, Master of the Hawaiian Ukelele and Spiked Punch Monday, July 27th, 3pm - 5pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Ethan, Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele is back on Irene's show, this time with his reggae-infused three piece "Spiked Punch." Voted "Austin Band of the Summer" by the Casavista Blog, these boys have been gearing up for tour by playing a steady diet of pool parties, birthday parties and luaus. Rumor has it they also spent $100 dollars at the inflatables section of Party City prior to their embarkment. Sit back and relax as they bring the record breaking heat of Austin's summer of '09 to you. Swimming after the show.
Expect an inside peek into the high stakes world of DIY/flexi/Indiepop record trading, and overlapping conversation between the East coast and West coast Michaels.
Los Angeles listeners please note - while this event isn't open to the public, we will announce a meet-up right after the show somewhere in the Fairfax area (99% sure it will be Canters), with the location confirmed on air.
Bomba Estereo Saturday, July 25th, 6pm - 9pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Bomba Estereo is a super-energized young band from Bogota, Colombia whose enervating sound is an electro-psychedelicized potpourri of that vibrant city's many musical influences: traditional bullerengue, cumbia, African-influenced champeta, reggae, dub, hip-hop - not to mention rock and roll. It's been a breakout year for the band, which made a smashing North American debut at SXSW and blew away a field full of Danes at the legendary Roskilde festival. Bomba Estereo joins us for a live set at the tail end of its first east coast tour - in support of new CD "Blow Up" on Nacional Records - before flying off to Amsterdam's famous Melkweg and further European adventures.
Personal and the Pizzas Saturday, July 25th, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Personal and the Pizzas are traveling all the way from Hoboken, NJ, to the studios of WFMU on the Cherry Blossom Clinic this Sat, July 25! Personal and the Pizzas play lo-fi, Ramones-influenced punk rock calling to mind the Heartbreakers (if Thunders sang about Pizza instead of dope!) Hear 'em live on the radio, then go see 'em at the Cake Shop in NYC (with Tyvek!). You can also check 'em out live on July 24 at the Silent Barn in Brooklyn.
Will C & KARMA (Brick Records) Thursday, July 23rd, 11pm - 2am

Telecult Powers Wednesday, July 22nd, 8pm - 11pm
on
Wm. Berger presents My Castle of Quiet
Who could be more appropriate for My Castle of Quiet's premiere live musical guest than a band that plays by candlelight, builds their own synthesizers, and generally spooks the hell out of people? Telecult Powers bring their heady, melodic, "electro-occultism" from Brooklyn to Wm. Berger's weekly horrorcast. If you throw equal parts Louise Huebner, Dario Argento, The Process Church, Wendy Carlos, Marie Laveau, Dr. Phibes and a stack of E.C. comics into the cauldron, you may create a brew that sounds remotely like Telecult Powers.
The Amanda Chronicles, Pt. 1 Wednesday, July 22nd, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irwin's show
Amanda, the growling Alabama power child, has surfaced. She and her brother Jody describe the chaotic process behind their 1986-89 home recordings.
Theo Angell Wednesday, July 22nd, Noon - 3pm
on
Day for Night with Maria Levitsky
The fascinating sounds of Theo Angell on Maria's show Wednesday July 22 at 1pm, where Theo will share some live acoustic songs. On the heels of his fourth album "Tenebrae," this son of a minister who grew up in rural Oregon will share some songs, play stuff off of some of his previous CDs (Dearly Beloved, Auraplinth) and talk about what shaped his musical sensibilities.
His sound is unclassifiable, but makes allusions to shape song, spirituals, bluegrass and the blues with some off the wall mysterious psychedelic sensibility overseeing the mood. His albums contain a combination of calliope-like polyphonic vocals followed by mournful dirges shot through with a cartoon foghorn melancholy.
"The music sounds like hallucinogenic campfire songs with a UFO hovering above the treeline. There are both crawling dirges and scampering ditties here" -Todd Simmons in an article about Auraplinth
John Wiese Wednesday, July 22nd, 2am - 6am
on
Marty McSorley's show
L.A. based noise artist and experimental musician John Weise stops by the WFMU studios to blast your ear drums into another dimension. With over 200 releases under various names and collaborations with the likes of Merzbow, Man is The Bastard, Amps for Christ, Cattle Decapitation, Wolf Eyes, The Liars, Smegma, and The Haters you might want to think about checking this dude out. And be on the look out for his new album Circle Snare on No Fun Productions as well as as a new colaboration with C. Spencer Yeh (of Burning Star Core) out now on Drone Disco.
Michael Lachowski from Pylon Tuesday, July 21st, 11pm - 2am
on
The Evan "Funk" Davies Show
Just confirmed! Michael Lachowski from Pylon will be calling in tonight at 11:15pm on The Evan "Funk" Davies show to fill us in on the special "Randy's Birthday" celebration this Saturday in Athens GA that celebrates the life of Randy Bewley, Pylon's guitarist, who passed away earlier this year. The show benefits Nuçis Space, a non-profit health and music resource center. Michael will also tell us about some upcoming releases that will include contributions from Randy, as well as other Pylon-related news and notes. Be sure to tune in! And if you're near Athens this Saturday, head over to the 40 Watt Club for Randy's Birthday.
Billy Bao Tuesday, July 21st, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
When not plopped on a stage at the No Fun Festival spewing barbs at confused audiences, Basque-via-Brooklyn transplant Mattin has helped the experimental and noise scenes chase its tail in circles via assorted musical, anti-musical and multimedia projects (a "collaboration" with Merzbow was pretty much him bringing a glass of water out to Masami Akita in mid-performance). The official bio places Billy Bao as a Nigerian punk rock vocalist fronting a band he fell in with in Bilbao; this rescheduled WFMU airing includes Mattin, Barry Weisblat, Margarida Garcia, Tim Barnes and Taku Unami. It happened while Brian was downstairs paying Ibby's Falafel deliveryman for the band's dinner so he can't quite recount what went on. We still can't quite figure it out either but hope you will enjoy it.
Cro Magnon Tuesday, July 21st, 9am - Noon
on
Talk's Cheap with Jason Sigal
Cro Magnon is a new two-piece from Lafayette, Indiana. They were first heard on WFMU via last year's XXperiments compilation LP, alongside female-fronted contemporaries US Girls and Zola Jesus. The LP also had featured Cro Magnon solo projects Bird (Kate) and Circuit des Yeux (Haley, who has a couple LPs on De Stijl). As for Cro Magnon, they have a pretty confounding Bruit Direct Disques 7'', where they sound like Times New Viking noise-pop one moment and primitive skronk the next. Their live shows are said to be worthy of their moniker; witness Cro Magnon for yourself at Brooklyn's Silent Barn on July 17th, along with Estrogen Highs, Cheveu and Pink Reason.
Reynold Philipsek Monday, July 20th, 3pm - 5pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
After 30-plus engaging albums in styles ranging from XTC-styled pop to straight-forward jazz, Django-influenced guitarist Reynold Philipsek shows no signs of slowing down, despite being virtually unknown outside of Minnesota. Reynold plays Hot-Club-of-France-styled music every week to enthusiastic audiences. Philipsek most recently put out "East Side," an album of conventional jazz featuring local chromatic harmonica wizard Clint Hoover. Reynold Philipsek sat down in the studio with Irene to record a set of solo guitar on a recent visit to New York.
Near Death Experiences Friday, July 17th, 6pm - 7pm
on
Shut Up, Weirdo with Andy Cohen and Frangry
This week on Shut Up, Weirdo, it's time to recount your near misses. What's the closest you've ever come to dying without actually kicking the bucket? Did you almost get run over by a tractor? Did you miss that flight that crashed into the Atlantic? Did you almost croak from that strange flesh-eating disease? Oh, right, that was just an STD.
Call us on the air at 201-209-9368 and tell us about your close call
with death. And don't forget the parents are out of town this week, Station Manager Ken will be filling in for Andy and it's all going down this Friday.
Total Abuse Tuesday, July 14th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Texas has long been purveyor of some of the meanest, most twisted takes on American hardcore, and Total Abuse are here from Austin today to show you that in 2009, it's only getting uglier. Boiling down Black Flag, Void, Whitehouse-style noise, grunge and thrash into a decrepit cauldron of extreme sonic hatred, prepare for your swift demise. See 'em in NYC: July 12th (with Drunkdriver) at the NY Eye and Ear fest at the Knitting Factory, then later that night at Market Hotel in Brooklyn, then July 13th at the Red Light District in Far Rockaway (with Yellow Tears).
Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 Tuesday, July 14th, Noon - 3pm
on
Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
Robyn returns for an encore at WFMU, this time bringing the Venus 3 -
Peter Buck (guitar), Scott McCaughey (bass) and Bill Rieflin (percussion). A late night after wrapping a tour with the Decemberists and some emergency dental work couldn't keep Mr. Hitchcock from returning to Studio B with a band for the first time since his historic session with the Soft Boys seven years ago!
Arthur Brock Monday, July 13th, 6pm - 7pm
on
The Media Squat with Douglas Rushkoff
Arthur Brock, founder of metacurrency.org, engages in a far-reaching conversation about how we've mistaken money for currency, and how to recognize the real flows of value and power in the world around us.
Beyond the Pale Monday, July 13th, 3pm - 5pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Toronto may not seem to be a Klezmer breeding ground but Beyond The Pale pulls it off beautifully. Melding musical influences from a Jewish mandolin virtuoso, a Dutch-Canadian clarinetist to Serbians proficient on violin and accordion, it's more Jewish-Balkan twang than Klezmer. Beyond The Pale dropped by to record a set for Irene and WFMU on a recent swing through NYC.
Live broadcast from Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing Series Friday, July 10th, 7pm - 11pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
A special live broadcast from Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing Series, hosted by Rob Weisberg. First we'll hear from the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, a Chicago-based collaboration between American jazz players and two former members of the highly regarded Ghanaian highlife band Western Diamonds. The Occidentals, who just released their first CD, are building a following playing shimmering old-school West African and Congolese electric dance music. Then at 9 pm we'll be treated to a performance by one of the all-time great singers of Congolese style electric dance music, Samba Mapangala with Orchestra Virunga. While based in Kenya in the early 80s, Samba and Virunga recorded one of the all time African classics, Malako. And Samba's still going strong today: His 2008 election song Obama Ubarikiwe (Obama Be Blessed) was a YouTube sensation.

on

The WFMU staff has returned from a triumphant broadcast from Spain, but the Primavera Sound Festival rolls on with Yo La Tengo! Tune in to hear our local heroes wowing the huge Barcelona audience. After all the years of dedicated marathon-covers service this indie-rock institution has given to WFMU, traveling 3,800 miles to record an amazing set of originals was the least we could do. This should hold you over until their new album comes out in September.

Camera Obscura Sunday, July 5th, 5pm - 7pm
on
Gaylord Fields's show
Glasgow's finest sextet has decided to conclude its monthlong North American tour at WFMU before jetting home to Scotland, and we are all the better for it. Tracyanne Campbell once again proves herself the heiress apparent to the great songwriter crown, as exemplified by Camera Obscura's latest LP, "My Maudlin Career." You'll find yourself bopping around to the peppy tunes, only to be blindsided by the melancholy behind each delectable hook.
Pan-Planetary Patriotism: World Music of the U S of A with Scott Kettner of Nation Beat Saturday, July 4th, 6pm - 9pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Nation Beat, the rousing New York band inspired by the music of Northeast Brazil but also with New Orleans, Appalachia, rock, funk, even klezmer in the mix, recently found itself effectively censored at a "world music" festival: the band was told that it could only perform its Portuguese-language songs, not the English ones. This inspired Nation Beat to take control of the musical agenda and create a platform to question the informed wisdom about "world music" - by starting its own festival.
The all-day event, "Is America Part of the World?" takes place Saturday July 11 at the Brooklyn Yard in Carroll Gardens. On today's show Nation Beat's leader Scott Kettner stops by to do a little rabble-rousing - as well as spinning selections by festival artists and also some Brazilian faves. And Rob will play tracks by other artists who blur the distinction between music of the US of A and the rest of the planet.
Z's Wednesday, July 1st, 2am - 6am
on
Marty McSorley's show
Brooklyn avant noise rockers Z's roll up to the WFMU studio for what promises to be a sick live set. Their slaying guitar, powerful effected sax and insane drumming will march you down a road to audio ecstasy (or insanity). Tune in and be on the look out for their new EP "Music of the Modern White" dropping on the The Social Registry.
Belgian Underground retrospective with Kraak Records Tuesday, June 30th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
With major European cities' rents climbing, Belgium has quickly become an escape hatch for many artists, and hence an exploding hub of underground art, music, and culture. Tommy Denys and Steve Marreyt play in Silvester Anfang and run the Kraak record label out of Ghent which has been exporting WFMU faves like Ignatz and Paris' El-G among others. Today they're going to stop by around 4PM to Brian's show and put the magnifying glass on a history of cool sounds past and present from a land that has given us such riches as Aksak Maboul, Bene Gesserit and the Honeymoon Killers. Cassette rarities, Belgian outsiders, and even some metal are promised.
Bobb Trimble Tuesday, June 30th, 9am - Noon
on
Talk's Cheap with Jason Sigal
In his early 20s, Bobb Trimble self-released two surreal psychedelic folk albums: "Iron Curtain Innocence" (1980) and "Harvest of Dreams" (1982). He played a handful of shows around the local Worcester, MA area with teenage backing bands The Kidds and The Crippled Dog Band, then disappeared. Meanwhile, his recordings lived on as sought-after collector's items, and inspired countless contemporary artists like Ariel Pink. In 2007, Secretly Canadian reissued both Bobb Trimble albums. This inspired a new Bobb Trimble band, the Flying Spiders, to form for a series of special shows, including the Homegrown psychedelic music festival taking place this July in Boston. Joined by the Flying Spiders, Bobb Trimble makes his long overdue NYC-area debut on Thursday, June 25th @ Rose Live Bar in Williamsburg
(you must RSVP here to attend!).
Nouvelle Vague Monday, June 29th, 8pm - 11pm

New Album "NV3" out soon featuring appearances by Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen, Terry Hall of the Specials, and Barry Adamson of Magazine.
Dan Meth Sunday, June 28th, 9pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
When a cartoonist/animator comes up with playlists of songs that are entirely in dialogue form and songs that are, in essence, just the recitation lists, the Stochastic Hit Parade can't resist. Dan Meth - author of the The Meth Minute , Nite Fite, and other funny viral web cartoons - joins Bethany for a romp through odd pop tunes in the above categories in addition to some hilarious audio he's used for animations. Imagine what transpires when a comedian calls a phone sex operator to reveal his secret fetish for Self-Empowerment Seminars. FCC approved.

Dam-Funk and DJ Hayden Honey of Superglorious Monday, June 22nd, 8pm - 11pm
on
Sound and Safe with Trent
L.A.'s Dam-Funk (say that like DAME) has been funking up the freakmosphere lately with a ton of help from his amazing Animal Collective "Summertime Clothes" remix. This guy is so smooth you'd have a hard time getting a grip on him if he were a pencil. Peanut Butter Wolf of Stone's Throw Records says he brought Dam on board "to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe." Yes.
DJ Hayden Honey, who headlined the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, plays out-of-this-would Japanese pop and lounge jams from 8:30-10:30pm EDT on Trent's show. One of the premier ambassadors of new foreign pop to New York City, Hayden Honey will make your brain flower into other dimensions. Yeah, really.
Trevor Dunn Sunday, June 21st, 10pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Stochastic Research Laboratories calculates that Mr. Trevor Dunn's appearance on 70+ albums with such groups as Fantômas, Mr. Bungle and the Melvins, plus myriad projects with John Zorn, Dunn's own Trio Convulsant and duo with Shelly Burgon have been aired on WFMU the equivalent of the volume of the Guggenheim Museum divided by pi (where seconds = cubic feet). Despite this staggering number, the alarming discovery was recently made that Mr. Dunn has never performed at, nor set foot into the WFMU studios. Drastic measures are being taken to arrange a live performance by his new rock band Mad Love this fall, but in the interim, Mr. Dunn brings favorites from his record collection to the Stochastic Hit Parade as an esteemed guest DJ. Aside from music, Trevor likes to answer your questions. Reference this page for past topics.

Youssou N'Dour Saturday, June 13th, 6pm - 9pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Youssou N'Dour is simply the most popular African artist in the world today. He is truly an icon - Time Magazine put him on their list of the 100 most influential people in the world. But sometimes such influence has a price: In 2004 he broke from his usual two streams of music - "mbalax" dance albums for the Senegalese audience, and crossover pop albums for the international audience - and did something entirely different: An album of songs performed with an Egyptian orchestra and dedicated to Sufi saints called "Egypt". While Egypt was a huge hit abroad, leading to his first Grammy, there was a firestorm back home in the Islamic country of Senegal, where some considered the songs to be blasphemous. A new film, "I Bring What I Love" (premiering at the BAM Muslim Voices festival on Saturday June 6 and opening at IFC Center June 12), documents the controversy and the rapprochement that followed. Youssou N'Dour is in town for the premiere, and a sold-out BAM concert to launch the Muslim Voices festival, and he will talk with Rob about this experience, his latest cd Rokku Mi Rokka (Nonesuch) and other musical adventures.

He's recording an album of Brassiens' songs, keeping to the pared-down, simple yet undeniably catchy arrangements of the originals. Pierre de Gaillande and friends will play some of those songs live for the WFMU listeners.
