The Bo-Keys Wednesday, May 26th, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Dan Mackta's show
Incendiary instrumental soul-funk groove straight outta Memphis. Bandleader Scott Bomar (late of Memphis inland surf-garage greats Impala) has assembled a killer outfit here, featuring original Sun and Stax Records rhythm men (including Willie Hall who you might remember from the Blues Brothers.) The Bo-Keys are supporting their new Yellow Dog Records release, The Royal Sessions (which was recorded at Willie Mitchell's legendary studio.)
Karen Mantler with Gary Valente Wednesday, May 26th, 2004, Noon - 3pm
on
Irwin's show
Karen Mantler returns to perform live on Irwin's program on Wednesday, May 26
from 2-3 pm. The New York vocalist and keyboardist has done a lot since
recording four albums paying tribute to the life -- and grieving over the
death -- of her beloved cat Arnold. Mantler has embarked on numerous tours
of Europe and the US, performing her own songs as well as the music of
Robert Wyatt, Nino Rota, and others. She has recently toured with the Peter
Blegvad Band and recorded and toured with the Carla Bley Big Band. Joining
her in the WFMU studios will be trombonist Gary Valente. This appearance
will not promote a local gig, it IS the gig -- Mantler's one NYC performance
of the year.
The Chesterfield Kings Tuesday, May 25th, 2004, Noon - 3pm
on
Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
The garage rock revival never would have happened without these early
Stones worshipping legends from Rochester NY. But they are not living in
the past as last year's album, The Mindbending Sounds of the Chesterfield
Kings, included all originals of amazing psych rock and landed them on the
Sopranos. The Kings stop by to give us the lowdown on how, after 25 years,
they are better than ever, and what it took to get Jorma Kaukonen to plug
in and rock again!
Invert Monday, May 24th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
This unique NYC-based string quartet gets their name from the fact that they invert the
usual classical standard and use two cellos in their configuration instead
of two violins. The result is a darker sound, which they use to their
advantage in their modernist compositions. Invert's latest on the Capstone
label is called "Between the Seconds" and includes unusual renditions of
the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" and the ever familiar theme from
"Psycho."
gal (aka Bernhard Gal) Sunday, May 23rd, 2004, 10pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Berlin-based composer/sound artist/musicologist Bernhard Gal presents a live
studio
construction of his latest work "Hinaus:: In den, Wald" which is best described
as an aural translation of the idiosyncratic writings and drawings of "outsider
artist" Adolf Woelfli. Gal recommends listening in darkness, the way it was
originally
presented as an installation. The lights come back on as he and Bethany discuss
this work and others, including "Rock's Role: (After Ryoanji)," a group sound
installation on display through 6/26 at Art in General.

Sexton Ming Wednesday, May 19th, 2004, Noon - 3pm
on
Irwin's show
A rare US appearance by Sexton Ming, underground poet/artist and self-proclaimed Godfather of British outsider music. Ming has been pursuing and performing "uncouth" songcraft for over 25 years, and has recorded several albums with Billy Childish. Sexton recently launched his own label, RIM Records, to promote himself and other artists who haven't got a hope in hell. His new CD collection is entitled "Crumb Girl." Ming will perform on Irwin's program from 1-2 pm accompanied by his wife, Ella Guru, on melodica. Sexton will also toss recordings by other artists into the mix. Because of near-universal indifference to his existence, Sexton claims that after fulfilling a few US gigs on this transatlantic visit, he will never perform live again.

Aerial View with Chris T.
Chris T. welcomes Coney Island's Sword Swallower, Human Blockhead, Magician, and Outside Talker -- they're all contained within the tall frame of Fred Kahl, aka the Great Fredini, whose
been a fixture at Sideshows by the Seashore for more than a decade. Fred
will discuss his life as a Coney Island Sideshow attraction and give us a
taste of his latest venture, This or That! Like strip poker without the
cards, This or That! brings adult entertainment to stage and screen as
contestants answer trivia questions, stuff marshmallows in their mouths,
take off their clothes, become encased in giant balloons, or try to name that
smell. Bootylicious co-host Julie Atlas Muz (who'll also join Fred in the
studio) calls the shots as contestants vie for cash, prizes, or the chance to
be spanked. The fun and humiliation climax when the "winning" contestant
chooses one of two curtains: "This" or "That", out of which emerges either a
classic burlesque hottie or an act that stinks so bad it's brilliant! This or That! will stage a special matinee as part of the 2004 New York Burlesque
Festival but you can catch a sneak preview on Aerial View Friday, May 7th!
