Beginning October 5th, and running for five consecutive Fridays, Doug Schulkind will be presenting the acclaimed radio documentary "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone." Twenty years in the making, this 5-hour audio masterpiece -- a thrilling kaleidescope of rare interviews, reminiscences, music selections and commentary -- analyzes and celebrates the creative genius of John Coltrane. First broadcast in 2001, Steve Rowland's prize-winning "Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone" is
particularly poignant today with the recent loss of many who were interviewed, including the late Max Roach, Dr. Art Davis, Alice Coltrane, Elvin Jones, and Sekou Sundiata.
This week will feature rare recorded interviews with Charlie Parker and John Coltrane; Coltrane's first-ever recorded performance, in 1946 on alto sax, while with the Navy in Hawaii; interviews with Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Steve Lacy, Rashied Ali and numerous other musical titans; a fascinating walking tour of the 1940s jazz scene in Philadelphia were the
young John Coltrane began his musical journey.

Today it's three hours of New Zealand sounds, thanks to a collection of records owned by the
fella who's imported more than a few of that country's stellar lights (Dead C, Alastair
Galbraith, Pin Group included) into our consciousness via his Philadelphia-based
Siltbreeze label. Today's show will be mostly bypassing the more familiar Flying Nun path
in favor of lesser known terrain that leads through labels such as Onset/Offset,
obscure one-offs such as the Portage & Nux Vomica as well as a smattering of lathe cuts. As an added bonus, Hamish Kilgour from the Clean/Mad Scene/Bailter Space/Great Unwashed fame will be visiting to tell some war stories of being smack dab in the middle of New Zealand punk/post-punk!
Todays progam is sure to include all that is Clean & unclean. Tune in!

Husband & wife performers and songwriting/production team Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, who wrote such hit songs as "Aint No Mountain High Enough", "You're All I Need To Get By", "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand", and "I'm Every Woman" visit the show to discuss their career. Holt's name is no doubt familiar to Mommyheads fans. He has several albums under his belt since that much-beloved group split up, and since that time he's relocated to Toronto and released a solo album called "Windows". He drops by WFMU today to play some of his quirkily beautiful songs.
Based in Mexico, Chejere mixes traditional Son Jarocho - the traditional style from Veracruz that most famously gave us La Bamba - with Latin rhythms and other contemporary elements.
One of the most charistmatic Latin American singers around, Lucia Pulido is known in New York for her brilliant interpretations of the traditional and popular vocal styles of Colombia.
Jose Conde y Ola Fresca are a wildly eclectic Cuban-rooted band, incorporating genres like son, changui, songo-funk, mambo, and timba as well as rock and soul in their sound.

Haunted George is a one-man band featuring Steve Pallow, formerly of garage punk kingpin acts like the Necessary Evils and the Beguiled. In the live setting, Steve is joined by Jimmy Hole from the Screws, and together they make completely sick, lo-fi, blues-tinged, fuzzed out country rock evoking the nightmares of a child grown up in this ugly Now. Think Hasil Adkins meets Michael Yonkers or Johnny Cash performing at Abu Ghraib instead of Folsom Prison. Madman Blues for these troubled times.
