My mom ran into Lil Wayne and entourage a few years back here in Louisiana at a gourmet grocery. Not knowing who he was, she asked him something like "Excuse me, young man, are you a rock star?" and he politely explained "No ma'am, I'm a rapper" and explained a bit about who he was, etc. She said he was very nice, but was kind of wasted. Old ladies can talk to anyone.

Heya chresti! Lol, you're not old, come on. Though as I'm getting into my 50s, I notice that the baseline amount of respect I get is going up. I was wondering why some friends of mine in their 30s kept using the "usted" form with me in Spanish, then I realized "Oh my god. They think I'm old." Same thing in north Louisiana when I'm up there: it's "yes sir, no sir" all the way. I can live with that.

¡Saludos don Franco! Yeah, it's not really common in New Orleans, but generally in the South, with anyone older than oneself, if it's a yes/no question, it's always yes sir/no sir or yes ma'am/no ma'am. People in their 60s will say it to their elders.

As it happens, I hit 65 today. Much like in that Tom Lehrer song, I'm ready for Medicare. And I have no problem with being called "Sir". On the contrary, the one that rankles me is the one where 20-something phone reps call me by my first name.

Franco Twinkie, I put the om in omnivore.
Parq: There was a short-lived band in my town that took a page from the Taj Mahal band and had multiple tubas. If I'm not insane, their big number was a 60-minute version of "Who Do You Love." Quicksilver crossed w/Taj Mahal. What I'd give to hear that again!
  Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

what food would YOU request if you were trapped in a mine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Bri...excellent! Here's to keeping at it!

sardines and licorice.
Avatar 11:20pm

maybe porridge too... idk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

coel, Pizza, and them some pizza, after that just bring pizza. It's so well-friendly aside from being delicious.

Aww. The vocals for this Funky Piano song are also mid-90s gold for me. this track accompanied the New Jersey Drive soundtrack...

Ira:

In one of the deleted scenes from Ace in the Hole, the Kirk Douglas character decides to let the guy caught in the mine not get rescued because he just finished a snack of sardines and licorice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm

I think a tube delivery system of rice pudding would be easy to facilitate.

50 hard boiled eggs and an 86 ounce steak. Then come see what I want to eat.

Lol, Mr. P! Sounds like those miners have their priorities in order.

I hear you, Ira: I've been on the Accu off and on for what, around a dozen years iirc, been listening to FMU for ~23 years, but it's taken on such significance this last year.

porridge? mostly carbs that wont get burned...unless they're trying to dig their way out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
mariano:

A friend of mine has been really into congee lately, I need to check it out. It's something I've seen in Chinatown over the years but never gave it a try. It's a rice porridge that's a blank canvas, can be savory or sweet.

A pal in France is trying to convince me to try "Tyrkisk peber"--a salty licorice candy dissolved into a bottle of vodka. I am quite skeptical.
Avatar 11:31pm
Bri The Beatnik:

I have a big bag of snacks in my room, I’d take that, maybe some French toast crunch, but I’d need to refrigerate the Sunny Delight that I like to accompany it

Can't go wrong with the vodka part
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

i don't know about tyrkisk peber, but some hot chocolate with sambuca added would be a good afternoon treat

I would definitely try the Tyrkisk peber if I were where it was a local specialty. Equally sure I would not go into the bar on the corner and order one.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

Bri...I don't think you can so much 'take' things as request them once in the collapsed mine. This limits one's options. But hey...it's all fair game I guess, being a hypothetical situation and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth∅:

yes - i would try the tyrkisk peber. i'll try damn near anything if it's not part of an animal. (and a few things that are)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
coelacanth∅:

well, if she requests a cooler be sent down, then they have to drill a hole big enough for a cooler to slide through; then the miners can trick them and crawl out through that hole!

i would def try the licorice vodka thing - as long as it's black licorice

mariano, did you ever go to Congee Village on Allen St. just south of Delancey? It is a wonderful, multi-level Chinese food establishment, emphasis on the Cantonese cuisine, with karaoke rooms in the basement and all manner of bars and tables throughout. I never thought to look up the meaning of 'congee' in the past. They make an insane Mai-Tai, and are also one of the few places in town that serve geoduck. It is a great place to go to before and after shows. I have hit it many times while catching tunes at the Bowery Ballroom.
  Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Ira:

So that's one virgin peber for mariano, and a Tyrkisk straight up for Bri the Beatnik. Back with your drinks in a flash.

i don't get into the city much any more. (which i'm fine with)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
mariano:

I don't mind licorice but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I'm not a huge fan of pastis and other licorice-tasting booze though. Well, I guess absinthe. Back when I drank, that is.

Mr. P: No, I never went to that one, sounds amazing. My late-night go-to spot was Great NY Noodle Town. I love the noodle soup with duck and shrimp dumplings. Last time I was there, a few years back, I was reminded of how difficult it is to pull off seeming sober while eating noodle soup. It was embarrassing because I was sitting at a big table with strangers whispering to each other.

Ah, thanks, Chop Scott.

Damn...this Spiral Wave Nomads is making me miss playing the guitar. I have been suffering pretty extreme carpal tunnel pain and numbness which I ignored for a year being I was looking after my pops. I finally went to a hand specialist a few weeks ago, and after some tests...I am cleared for a simple surgery that is going to fix it almost immediately. I'm so stoked I'll soon be pain free in my hands again. Doubly stoked I can begin to work on music for the first time in a while. Spiral Wave Nomads is inspiring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
mariano:

The places I tended to go back to were Thai Son and Pho Pasteur for Vietnamese, New Green Bo for cheap eats, Prosperity Dumpling for pot sticker (great scallion pancakes too), though I guess they got shut down when they busted them making dumplings in the alley behind the building, lol. North Star had good dumplings too. And then, when there were enough of us, Jing Fong and Golden Unicorn for dim sum. That's one thing I really miss; no dim sum in NOLA. Great Vietnamese though, and a lot of it's taken on its own Creole edge.

Thank you Ira, Scott! Hope to see everyone at TomDash's!
