Don't assume they're all hillbillies. That's sort of an insult to hillbillles. A lot of 'billies have a hell of a lot more sense than that. Many of the insurrectionists had enough money to buy tactical gear and such. Some yokels are pretty smart.

Guinea .. Baldwin wrote some heavy things, but he was always heading for the light and goodness ... He analyzed racism scientifically, with ustified anger and frustration but looking for answers... Even in Beale Street (book)- he used the charcters as foils (not cliches/ Significant Literary characters).. showing the good Italian lady helping Fonny against the racist cop and then the good Jewish lanlord saving the loft for Tish and Fonny ... and giving the deposit for Fonny's bail... (taught the book in NYC HS for 25 years... - Film is ok, changed the ending???)

I just watched the Netflix doc, "I'm not your Negro", which at the end of his life (the unfinished book), although provided a path to resolution, still echoed his previous criticisms of society. Part of the difference in tone might be b/c he knew he was not much longer for the world (and after the late 60s, he, was getting forlorn.) That said (and I agree w/ his assessment), his erudite prose and poetry of all eras are an amazing read.
