Ursula1000:

In 1990, I got a cassette from a friend who had just got back from London. It had what I later found out to be the first show on the now legal radio station Kiss FM (they were a pirate station before). I was obsessed with this tape, trying to hunt down all the tracks and reading The Face and i-D religiously keeping up with the burgeoning scene that kick started with Acid House. Tons on tasty jams like the neo soul movement headed by Soul II Soul, acid jazz, sampledelic house from S'Express and Bomb The Bass. The list goes on...
Enjoy this 2 hour trip of tracks inspired by this killer tape!

Good timing @ursula1000 . Because it's exactly 30 years this week that the KLF were on the number 1 spot in the UK charts with 3AM Eternal

Can I get all hipster and say “I was there!” Not in London, I mean I was all about this kinda shizzle, along with the Golden Age hip-hop that was also going on. The sampler was the most exciting instrument one could “play.”

I was 20 in 1990, same references for sure. When that first Soul II Soul album came out, it was a revelation, those beats. Buffalo Stance had the same effect. Along with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis in 1990. Oh, snap (but please not the power), it's Tom's Diner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Otis Fodder:

I kid, I know all the lyrics to I've got the Power. I stand beside, there are no guilty pleasures.

For SF bay area folks who may be reading, this reminds me of listening to Cameron Paul on KMEL mixing it up and clubs City Nights and the Palladium.

I loved “I got the power”! “It’s getting, it’s getting, it’s getting kinda hectic”

The days when everything had the “Funky Drummer” beat. Even Sinead OConnor.

I was in Miami Beach pretty much living in a bubble with this stuff alongside my crew of anglophile club kids.
Avatar 12:31pm

This stuff was all over LA- clubs, bars, both commercial and public radio. It wasn’t even underground, really. A strange rare feeling of actually being somewhat connected to the mainstream for a change, haha.
Avatar 12:33pm
Ursula1000:

Miami's club scene was weird---house music to an extent but a LOT of industrial/goth-y stuff at the alternative spots

MTV absolutely LOVED Neneh Cherry when this video released
Avatar 12:37pm

Huh, I would not have thought that Miami would be big on goth/industrial. Figured it was more of a Latin scene. What with the Sound Machine and all.
