Hey, David (iL), Bas, Hubig, chresti, TDK60, YB, spodi, chris, Michael, Sem and all other upthread friends!
Hubig, yeah, there's a seriously overpriced "organic grocery" on the corner. For most things, it's too much (like, e.g., $6 for egg and cheese on a roll!), but it has a good deal on large containers of spinach usually and also, oddly, on good organic eggs.

It's especially galling in that it's on the same block as our only local diner, which was priced out by rising rents *three years ago* yet the storefront is still empty. (It was $2.50 for egg and cheese on a roll there, and they had homemade hot sauce!)

I swear we did more than eat when we were there, though.
We met our Edinburgh friends in Amsterdam. One of my fave stories is that they went back a few months later. They returned to EDI and caught a cab home with one of the Famously Chatty Cabbies of Edinburgh. Totally standard issue: white hair, blue eyes, deep Edinburgh accent. He of course asks them where they came in from, and when they say "Amsterdam," he laughs and gives a knowing "oh ho!" Rob says, "Oh, no, nothing like that -- we were just there for a conference." And the cabbie says, as if heartbroken to realize it, "Nae coffeeshops? Nae space cakes?"
