"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

@Woods: It's been a minute, but I remember loving "Invisible Man." Also, I'm by no means a Baldwin expert, but literally nothing by him I've encountered isn't excellent, including novels ("Giovanni's Room"; "Go Tell It on the Mountain"), plays ("Blues for Mister Charlie"), and essays/theory ("Notes of a Native Son"; "Nobody Knows My Name"; "The Fire Next Time"). You're making me think I should find the stuff I haven't got to yet.

@Woods: It's not just shelf space, it's head space. I'm afraid I wouldn't take the time to listen to the whole thing. Sometimes there is just too much greatness to absorb. I have a 6-CD set of Miles Okazaki playing the complete compositions of Thelonious Monk on solo guitar. It's amazing. But I don't think I've given it the attention it deserves, because there's also that Rob Mazurek record, and Nubya Garcia, and Quinn Kirchner, and ... and ...

i guess Cecil was my first "avant" jazz. but then it depends how you define avant jazz. it initially meant "free" jazz. and then there's "out" jazz. and what the fuck's the difference...
to me it's "jazz" - as opposed to "something that's called jazz that isn't jazz because there's no improvisation".
