Listener comments!

Avatar 2/17 3:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Hello all! Lost my internet connection for several days last week, so I wasn't able to do my show Tuesday. (Thanks to Julie for the heroic, last-minute fill-in!) Anyway, today we'll be listening to the tapes I meant to air. Let's pretend last week's snafu never happened!
Avatar 11:07am
Kay:

Situation normal again, I hope (not at all f***ed up)
Avatar 11:53am
Tony Coulter:

Hi, Kay! Yeah, things are back to normal, thankfully.
  11:58am
headcleaner:

last week? what last week? all time is the same now
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm
Yvang:

Thankfully snafus are not archived. Hey Tony and all!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Welcome back, Tony, and glad the wires are cooperating!

David (in London):

Afternoon Tony and all groovers and hiss-fans here assembled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
Sem:

Hello, Tony, cassette-treasurers, and those still on the fence about tape hiss.
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, headcleaner! You're right. Time is meaningless. Maybe it really happened next week.
Avatar 12:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, hey, hello, Yvang, James, David, & Sem!!
Avatar 12:06pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape on now isn't on discogs -- which, of course, means it doesn't really exist.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
David (in London):

I'm already loving this tape life.

Hail the Semulator, Vyang!

Julie did a hero's shift last week. Darn great it was. Glad to have you back though Tony.

Listening Out There:

Current recording not to be confused with Ub Iwerks...
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe it'd work if Mickey Mouse went to the moon. Greets, L.O.T.!
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe this music would work, I mean.
Avatar 12:16pm
Katya Oddio:

Loving this. Thanks for the time travel, Tony! Cheers!

Listening Out There:

Maybe so. Maybe "Music for Tomorrowland"? (Thinking of a past section of Disneyland here...)

Dean:

Lewis Demetri Corelis of Musik Werks died in October 2010.
  12:18pm

werks for me
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi there, Katya!
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean. Reading the obituaries again, I see.
  12:22pm
Dean:

Cheers me up.

Tony Coulter:

I discovered Musik Werks the first (and only?) time I went to City Island. Found one of their LPs in a weird little record store -- which is no doubt long gone.

The Future Ain't What It Used to Be...

Was this the record store?

Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes! I couldn't remember the name, but that is indeed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm

Hello, D iL. Head down in spreadsheets w/ Tape Hiss in my ears.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
David (in London):

When the horizon of 'the future' is shrunken to 'this coming Spring', futurism becomes a somewhat hard furrow to plough. Sigh.
  12:36pm
hunkered oats:

Hey Tony I’m on my exercise bike can you play eye of the tiger
Avatar 12:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, hunkered (I'm guessing holland) oats!

How about eye of newt?
  12:39pm
hunkered oats:

Yes that works thanks!!
  12:40pm
Dean:

"Asked to describe him, the list is long; musician, audio engineer, writer, sage, innovator, teacher, philosopher, futurist and student of engineering. An environmental activist and practitioner, he was founder of Green Industry Aggregation, co-founder and CEO of Midwest Sustainable Energy Contractors, 2009 Moline mayoral candidate, and Future House USA-US Team Project Manager at The Learn Green Foundation. But the role of greatest importance to him was that of devoted and loving father, husband and family man."

I love that dangling participle. Seems like he was a great guy.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Dean speaketh of Lew Corelis, one half of Musik Werks.
  12:43pm
Dean:

Tomorrow would have been his 68th birthday.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

I, of course, had no idea of that, but I guess it's appropriate to be playing his stuff today, then.
Avatar 12:56pm
Tony Coulter:

I *think* he's the one in the foreground, tho I'm not sure. By the way, this same photo appears on the back of their first LP, "Songs You've Never Heard Before" www.discogs.com...

hey Tony and everyone. In and out, I am. Tuesday has become a trickier day for me at work of late. I am liking this cassette quite a bit. Winter Interlude is lovely.

I have been enjoying the Musik Werks.
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Cmurtha!

I'm glad you and Mark are enjoying this thing.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

The tracks on this tape are basically arranged chronologically. All of side A was recorded in 1977, and we are now up to 1979.
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

And now, at last, we've entered the 1980s....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
David (in London):

Getting a bit Louis and Bebe Barron at points. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Rick from SC:

Welcome back Tony.
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Rick!

Other than not being able to do my show, or work, it was actually kind of nice to have no internet connection for three days. I didn't fritter away hours on youtube, for one thing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
listener james from westwood:

Lovely stuff through the halfway mark!
Avatar 1:34pm

Thanks, James!

The abrasiveness quotient will be rising now.
  1:35pm
Mark Williams:

getting A Certain Ratio vibes here.
  1:43pm
Mark Williams:

but not anymore...
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

I've always wondered why the New Zealand experimental/post-punk/indie scene of the '80s got a good deal of attention here in the U.S. (the Flying Nun stuff, for example), but similar Australian music got comparatively little attention. Just chance, I guess.
  1:48pm
Mark Williams:

Beyond the Southern Cross was a compilation I picked up that had a lot of Aussie stuff. Mixed in was some Clean, mind you.
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I've been looking for that comp.

It's just that there are so many great Australian '80s bands that are barely known at all. Like, say, Makers of the Dead Travel Fast and all the other M Squared groups. Or the David Chesworth stuff.
  1:55pm
Mark Williams:

Vinyl On Demand did a lot of that M Squared stuff. Well I think the Flying Nun material is more pop/indie on average. That played well in the UK during the '80s.
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

I've got that Vinyl on Demand M Squared box -- it's a great thing. Yeah, I guess it is true that Flying Nun could get pretty poppy at times -- maybe that is the reason they made more headway internationally.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
David (in London):

I'm liking the turn this one is taking.
  2:04pm
Mark Williams:

There was that "Take It" compilation series of Aussie post-punk. I recently got Vol 1, after buying Vol 2 and really liking it. Vol 1 was a bit of a dud, however, and it made me wonder about the overall quality of what was going on in Australia. Compare that to that Time Out comp that Bruce Russell of Dead C did for Flying Nun and it's no contest.
Avatar 2:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't know the "Take It" series, I don't think.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Oops -- double negative.
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

I don't think I don't think I don't know.

Triple negative, the contracted "not" in "don't" times two, plus "know."

A little nostalgia via Mars?
Avatar 2:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Tongue of Yak!

Yes -- I do miss Mars.

Tony Coulter:

And my blue, three-eyed Martian bride.
  2:29pm
Dane:

Good stuff but I can't help feeling like it's missing something that was there on Ledge and Dog Photos. They feel more like an actual group of people making experimental music together rather than a recording project.
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dane! Kinda know what you mean. Guess they were adjusting to slimming down from a quartet to a duo.
Avatar 2:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Oops. I think we may be listening to "Blue Doors and Water" still. I jumped the gun on "Moisture."
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

These tapes can be tricky for this poor accuplaylister when they don't list track lengths.
  2:44pm
Dane:

Dog Photos was just re-released
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Good to know. I've got Ledge, but not that one.
Avatar 2:47pm

Tho I do have both on a twofer CD.
