Todd, I never visited the Short Stop. I went to Upsala College in East Orange in 1981 and we had the Harris Diner down the street. My forays into Bloomfield were for banking, buying books and records. Oh, my friends and I would go to the Firehouse Pub and the Feedbag in Bloomfield.

A Man Called Flintstone was a gem. I just hadn't thought about it in ages. I really loved when the Beau Brummelstones were on the TV series.

Todd, mentioning the Move gets me thinking how American radio pretty much ignored Roy Wood and his band. I think I played the "Shazam" album 5 or 6 times the day I bought it. And "Message From the Country" is another overlooked classic LP.

@Gerry from Miami When you say "Roy Wood and his band" do you mean The Move? As Todd says, ELO formed from The Move in 1970, original members were Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan. That was supposed to be the end of The Move, but contractual obligations kept them alive till 1972, when Wood left ELO to form Wizzard. One of my all time greatest record finds was The Move Greatest Hits Vol. 1 for a few bucks at the Sam Goody in the White Plains Galleria www.discogs.com...

@dk50b That looks like a typical Pickwick budget LP with only five songs per side---all good ones, though! The history of the Move, ELO and Wizzard is a complicated one, as you outlined. Jeff Lynne seems to have profited the most in the final analysis, but my loyalties are with Roy Wood.

@Krys O. Mamaroneck boy myself. Used to take the 60 bus to White Plains, which even then was pretty happening by suburban city standards. @Krys: I mean, culturally. In 2021, we listen to Eno and Bowie records from 1974 (47 years ago!), and its cool. But in 1974, who was listening to music from 1927? Only R. Crumb and a few other collectors of old 78s, and that was more weird than cool.

@YB I think pop culture didn't really begin till after WWII. That signifies a huge shift in generational time perception.

Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@YETI BOB: Some records from 40-60 years ago sound so contemporary, whereas in the sixties records from the twenties sound like they were from a different geological era.

@YETI BOB: In the 70's I want back as far as the 40's but that was because I had an uncle who was a polka DJ.

Oh, and Happy Friday!

Either - the rate of cultural change has slowed down, or the rate of time itself has incresed. At least, that's how it feels to me.

i always wondered why 78's seem to get tossed like useless trash. there have to be some, or many, that are treasure. they are made of an abrasive material which kills modern styluses, but still.

@YETI BOB: Some of the blues and country recordings/performers from those days do still impact us in various ways.

@Woods: Sure, some people were listening to the old stuff. But it wasn't common, and it wasn't "cool".
@PaleSon: That's a good observation. The introduction of TV created a rupture, similar to what the WWW did
Avatar 8:53am
Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@winston legthigh: Certain blues 78's are probably the most collectible records ever from a $$$ standpoint...we're talking $15, $30k for one 78.
Avatar Wake Supporter Marathon 2024 Wake Golden Glistener Marathon 2024 8:55am
YETI BOB:

@Todd: Absolutely. I love old-timey music, listened to the Antique Phonograph show for years, and I collect old country blues records. I try to play guitar like Skip James. Old music is really important to me. I was just making a comparison
