i've heard several show hosts play 45s at 33rpm. maybe Diane did it first? she's been around longer than most other fmu people who are around now. i think i remember Ken Freedman doing that in the 80s.
...but i'm sure it's been done for most of the station's existence.

some say that was just for spoken word records but i've owned 16rpm classical music records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08am

It seems counterintuitive, since fidelity increases with RPM, but I can see how they'd want to fit long classical pieces on a disc.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am

diciassette i'm guessing (and that's all) that 16rpm music records were either a failed experiment, or something marketed as "budget" records, as you could fit on 1 record what might've taken 3 or 4 78rpm records
Avatar 2:15am
northguineahills:

For the Mexican analog for Houston's chopped and screwed, see Monterrey's cumbia rebajada scene. (I slow down many cumbia records, my turntables goes w/ it's sliders from 16.5 to 78 rpms). Then, some artists actually recorded cumbia that slow....

@diciassette: Yes! I saw it when it first came out and recommended on Uncle Michael's show when he was playing cumbia. For everyone else, it's a beautiful movie of what Mexicans have to deal w/ in the US, and the music is amazing (filmed in Mexico City and NYC).
