apropos nothing at all, had a small nerdgasm on learning FMU has an AAC stream i was previously unaware of. my terribad ears prolly can't hear the difference but i've convinced myself it's acres better.

I think the history of apple/AAC is they choose used it from itunes because they could DRM the files.

yeah, apple didn't invent aac — just adopted it, likely for reasons both technological (it typically does better at the same bitrates than MP3) and political (at the time they adopted it, aac encoders were a bit harder to get your hands on than mp3, so using it could potentially convey a proprietary advantage). it's not so much DRM per se — you could wrap any format in DRM.
