I am enjoying the hell out of this and w/out irony. I don't get people who thumb their nose condescendingly at Billy Joel as if a guy who who simply wrote DOZENS of hit songs, and with real musicianship, is not super talented. I think the guy is awesome. S are his MSG shows. Get over the "he's not cool" childishness
  9:19am
Niko, Copenhagen:

Joel is a very odd character in the history of pop music. Kind of "odd man out". Seems like a guy who had his feelings hurt somehow. I have a very soft spot for him - we always listen to him in the car on summer holidays. The kids like him!

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:22am
Threemoons:

@YetiBob I DO have a soft spot for Billy Joel--growing up in and around the NYC area, his music was an absolute constant backdrop for my entire childhood and adolescence. He was on every car pool radio when we got driven to school in the AM, the bus driver played stations that were Joel heavy, etc. I mean, from birth until I went away to college he was a constant. So there's some nostalgia there, but also a bit of resentment because he was so OVERPLAYED.

@3Moons: I grew up in NJ and heard his songs constantly growing up, too. I think I just got the resentment part, not the nostalgia. (And then there's the fact that he's just terrible.)

@Niko I stayed in two different places--most of the time we were in a nice residential neighborhood within walking distance of the Hellerup subway stop, but we also spent a full week at the very nice home of his uncle up on the main peninsula. At the time, his uncle was the richest man in Denmark (may still be) and had a gorgeous house up near some managed pine stands. Really lovely. Peaceful, sane, clean country and city. We also visited a bunch of farm museums which were amazing. And I LOVED the food. A lot of mornings, my then-BF wanted solo time with his grands, so I would doddle off into the city and explore.....

Okay, here is my one Billy Joel story. When I was young my dad worked for a flooring company in Sag Harbor. He was sent to replace the carpet in a set of offices. Turns out they were Billy Joel’s and on one of the days my dad was working, he popped in and said hi to everyone. A few weeks later I was at a friend’s house and they were watching MTV (my family could not afford cable). The video for Pressure came on. As we watched I mentioned that my dad installed carpeting in his offices. At that moment, Billy Joel was swallowed by the carpet on the video! Hilarious!

@Niko--We were sort of in the center of the peninsula--very high elevation for Denmark; you needed a 4x4 to get up into the deep of the woods. There were a few gorgeous naturally colored mineral pools up there, and a family of tree-keepers lived in a little cottage up there--they had a few ponies and sometimes this little girl maybe 6 or 7 would ride one, herding along a flock of ducks.....Glad you like the US despite ourselves! I don't know why Billy Joel seems to rub people the wrong way. His "rock" songs are really wannabe Tin Pan Alley/Broadway material in disguise, maybe. Also it seems he's gotten creepier as he's gotten older, what with marrying 20-year-olds and driving drunk and all. (I don't have anything the man myself). I saw him in 1977(?) at the late great Omni in Atlanta (half house show with a huge curtain draped across the arena to reduce the seating capacity).

@Mup, I think this dates back to the 80s and 90s when the radio was basically the only way to hear new music (unless you worked in a record store or something) so stations like FMU were the only way to escape overplayed popular stuff. Now you can listen to almost anything anywhere anytime on demand, so everything is jumbled together (as it should), but that old-school mentality of “non-commercial stations should defend us against the hits” perseveres sometimes (guilty as charged, totally can’t get over the 90s).

Just have to thank Joe because i learned something today. I always thought Ronnie Spector teamed with Southside Johnny to sing "Say Goodbye to Hollwoood" because I saw her sing it with the Jukes at Cleveland stadium in 1977. I can't believe I missed the Billy Joel cover set! I grew up in a piano playing family so Billy was big in our house. Will have to go back and listen. I know BJ gets a lot of grief but I have a soft spot for him and saw him live many times in the 80s. He always put on a great show. Saw him the day my Red Sox let our World Series victory slip through Bill Buckner's legs. Billy was giving us the score throughout his show. He was a NY fan of course so he wasn't happy. I was thrilled on the other hand because our Sox were winning throughout his show. Only afterward, in the parking lot, did it all fall apart!

  10:41am
Listener Bop Monroe:

In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the rear, or "aft", part of the superstructure of a ship.

The name originates from the French word for stern, la poupe, from Latin puppis. Thus the poop deck is technically a stern deck, which in sailing ships was usually elevated as the roof of the stern or "after" cabin, also known as the "poop cabin". On sailing ships, the helmsman would steer the craft from the quarterdeck, immediately in front of the poop deck. At the stern, the poop deck provides an elevated position ideal for observation.
