"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Very mixed feelings about Leary. Very much 'a man of parts'—you don't get through West Point and to a research position at Harvard on looks (alone)—but he set serious psychedelic research back decades and had theories of mind and of space migration he promulgated on very little evidence. I see him as a very sincere con-man, that is he always conned himself first, but still a con artist.

((MW)) I know a lot of folks have issues with Leary but he (like John Lennon) is a hero to me. YB I'm in the same boat. My son just grabbed me one at auction, 2013 with 125k miles. Crazy how much they depreciate. My 2004 suburban was literally coming apart in my hands (3 of the armrests have come off while closing doors, for example) so I wanted something that would stay intact. The Benz was quite a bit cheaper than a Chevy Tahoe for the same year.

(Murakami Whywolf)) I'd mostly agree. Leary became another NewAge lecture circuit guy in white shoes. Libertarians... Kind of think of Leary as the Hefner or Disney of LSD. But do also see him as caught up in the whole pageant of the inevitable between Psychedelics & the Establishment. Yerknow it had to be somebody & it was him. His intelligence & observation & articulation can't be disregarded wholesale...

Oooh, a foodie convo! Fish for Friday! Yes, catfish and carp both can pick up the taste of where they were caught--In Ashkenazi cooking, carp usually has some kind of vinegar or sweet and sour treatment if the fish is being served as-is, or it's part of gefilte fish. FWIW I LOVE fish done right. Monkfish is almost like lobster and needs gentle treatment. If I had to have only one kind of fish, it would be the very small silver butterfish--sustainable, healthy--and very tasty. I just head and gut them, slash each side 3x, shake with seasoned coarse cornmeal, and shallow-fry. Great hot or cold. You eat the bones; very good source of calcium. I like to slap a few of them, cold, onto a roll with slaw or tomatoes and mayo or whatever; to me that's a perfect fish fry.

When I was a very little girl I would go fishing with my Mom and Dad at either a local lake (rented rowboat) or the local reservoir. At the latter, guys who were Serious Fishermen would be pulling out these ENORMOUS carp--the ranger's lodge/permit station had tons of photos of some 3' long and larger monsters. Between C.I.A., Wasson, and Clare Booth Luce, psychedelics _started_ as very Establishment, people who had enough of a classical education to know about the Eleusinean Mysteries that were open only to the élite and wanted something similar.

I may judge Leary harshly because I'm a scientist and Leary always claimed to be, and certainly wanted the imprimatur of SCIENCE and the respect that gets, at least in some quarters even as he got more and more slip-shod in his methods, especially over-generalising from his particular seminary/West Point/Harvard case and tilting his pronouncements toward the ones that would get him more young 'tail'. And, of course, there was his fatal flaw, rooted in the most unscientific habit of all: believing the World was the way he wanted it to be.

—which is why I wrote 'harshly' and not 'over-harshly'. I don't dismiss him, but I think he's closer to Joyce or Burroughs than (say) Shulgin.

YETI BOB:
There were too many locks, but I'll use an analogy: official sexual morés in the early 1960s were terrible and terribly restrictive, but I know of at least one California high school in the 1970s where O(10) teachers were having sex with students. In software it is a given that fixing a bug can allow things to proceed far enough to trigger a much worse bug, as I learned when I fixed something 'small' just before shipping and would've wrecked the product if it hadn't been caught.

I've had honeycomb tripe that I just could not eat, and that's rare for me, though chitlins (a misspelling, I think) also push it. Foot's the same for me.

When done, while still hot, used a clean lint free towel or similar to hold the hot tongue and cut/peel off the tough outer skin. Comes right off. Slice and serve hot or cold. Does NOT taste salty when cooled off. Usually served with onions and mustard. Delicious. Some butchers also sell smoked tongue which is amazing.

My Nordic Dad, may he rest in peace, used to sometimes go eel fishing at night with a flashlight--they come right up. Locals would home-hot-smoke them using water-soaked copies of the Sunday Times. Home smoked eel is delicious cold; better than whitefish.

From kindergarten to 5th grade, we lived down the street from a butcher and I had to walk past on my way to school. They'd have chickens displayed in the windows with their feet touching the panes. I also remember the rendering truck would come by to pick up bones. This was also the time of DDT trucks driving through the neighborhood.

one time long ago in high school, I was feeling brave at the taco truck & ordered lengua & sesos tacos. They made the tongue taco first—chunk of tongue pulled out & chopped fine—looked good. for the next one they pulled out what looked like half a calf brain, sliced off a chunk, and chopped it up. It was pretty gnarly, but not too bad with the extra-hot salsa.

Took me years to want to eat eels. When I was a wee lad, several of my uncles would go fishing for eels at a place called Bloody Pond. I remember once my grandmother was cooking them in a big pot and she scooped a bunch of them out with a ladle to check their doneness. It looked like a bunch of snakes coming out of a pot of boiling water, draped over the handle and dangling over the water. I absolutely had nightmares after that.
