@buffalo: interestingly, most successful poker players have only limited understanding of (formal) probability theory. And many are basically mathematically illiterate / allergic

If anyone wants to start a WFMU commenter poker Zoom group, I’m in. I’m not very good but I’m enthusiastic. Can we all wear those funny green-shaded hats like on Star Trek: TNG?
Avatar 4:16pm
Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

you'd think that would be where most of your knowledge base would come from - understanding the probability of your hand to win, and understanding the mathematically most efficient bet you could make on that hand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
steveo:

a book that helped me enjoy calculus is "A Tour of the Calculus" by David Berlinski (1995)
Avatar 4:17pm
Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

although the whole 'bluffing' thing throws a huge wrench into playing probabilities too heavily... unlike blackjack
  4:17pm
headcleaner:

Rather, they get a lot of mileage out of "reading the room" (knowing their opponents, and their gut instincts as to whether they are bluffing in a given moment). And on lengthy personal data trail on how they handled various corner cases in the game (which are fiendishly complex). But it's much more "muscle memory" -based than math-based.
  4:18pm
headcleaner:

EIK - "not very good, but enthusiastic" is exactly the kind of opponents successful poker players love to have :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Handy Haversack:

The new big thing in poker is game-theory optimal play, which is basically "if you always do the exact right thing for the specific situation, you'll win! Now memorize the following billion combinations."

But I think most successful poker players of the last twenty years have a pretty good knowledge of odds and probability.

Certainly, you can make it work more in Limit than No Limit. But then, Limit is boring.

  4:25pm
headcleaner:

Poker is definitely a fascinating game (mathematically and psychologically). But ultimately a huge, festering rabbit hole (in both senses) and in recent years, has become highly developed and professionalized (such that there's now a very considerable learning curve to catch up just not to get creamed... let alone gain lucrative skills in it)
  4:26pm
headcleaner:

All things considered, I'd rather devote that energy to other pursuits (like learning Japanese)
Avatar 4:28pm

Avatar 4:35pm
Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

@marie hah. if you are actually interested, there are several authentic zen centers in the NYC area, not so sure about Jersey. i don't know much about taoism and shintoism but i would think those have a bit more of a language and culture barrier. most Zen centers these days tend to be run by (white) Americans.
  4:35pm
headcleaner:

some folks make good living at poker, but (for that to happen) there hast to be a "silent majority" of players who are at best borderline, and most likely steadily losing slightly. As well as a constant stream of "marks" coming into the game and quickly washing out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Phillippe Bastille:

They say if you sit in on a game and can't figure out who the worst player is it is probably you. Or, in my case, it's always me
  4:41pm
headcleaner:

There was one famous player who wrote about this a few years ago - something to the effect of how the game became a "black hole" to him once he realized how, in order for him to be raking in all that other dough... scores and scores of other (typically lonely men) were running their lives into the ground
  4:45pm
headcleaner:

One has to remember that, at the end of the day, the game of poker doesn't create -anything- in the form of tangible wealth of utility (and in fact consumes a considerable amount of energy and resources from everyone involved). So in that sense it's even worse than Bitcoin (which at least enables money laundering as a form of "utility")
