RIP pip pip Phillip, sir dude was really old... Morning Doug et alia. Ready to end this week so badly! Did I have covid? Nope said the test, I was just "regular" sick. Recovered just time for my second pfizer jab yest morn, and my much too long day ended in an Austin parking lot, standing next to my car slightly feverish (AGAIN) whereupon I puked into a half-filled bag of tor-TILLuh chips, and now feel a LOT better... can we PLEASE give the drummer some now? Good morning Doug!!!!

Maybe I should title this show Live from Massey Hall?
Avatar 10:39am
Listener Gregory:

Doug, only if you subtitle it "The Greatest Set Ever!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Doug Schulkind:

Extremely forceful bass lines seem to be a recurrent element found in Cal Massey's works. Reggie Workman is on bass here with Freddie Hubbard. He was on the Coltrane performance in the previous set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Jeff Golick:

There's such a unique tonality to these early 60s Blue Note sessions.
Avatar 10:41am
Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, yes, and I think there's a Van Gelder factor that we hear without quite knowing it's there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
An old friend of mine actually went to that famous concert at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1953. And you want to know who accompanied my friend to that concert? Jim Newman, the uncle of our very own Uncle Michael.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY.

s'funny, @Doug, I thought I was hearing Herbie-ish sounds from Walton, but now I'm thinking that Herbie was also taking from Tyner...?
