Man, these guys are real upsetters!
Avatar 1:45pm
Mr Fab:

I’m kinda getting the impression that these guys are the Australian Was (Not Was).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
ironybread:

Never thought of that Fab, you're on to something there. In terms of their sense of humor their only close American equivalent that comes to mind is Negativland

Mr Fab:

Love their sense of humor. Was (Not Was) almost always did everything in various pop music contexts, as opposed to media sound collage, hence my W(NW) comparison. These guys are tunesmiths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Aitch:

The live shows were insane- lots of guest musicians so they could really play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
ironybread:

Aitch, when/where did you see them live?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

How the fuck am I suppose to get any work done with this on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
chresti:

They have some crazy costumes, perfect pandemic band.
Avatar 1:51pm
Mr Fab:

And by “work” what exactly do you mean Franco, haha
Avatar 1:51pm
Buddy Runyan:

More like Mothers of Invention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
ironybread:

Yes Buddy, a strong Mothers comparison can be made too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Sorting my socks, Fab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Aitch:

A lot, they were always touring, never sold many records. Big beer barns their native environment, Selinas in Sydney my fave in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm

Funny, I didn't think of The Mothers, but yeah.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Franco Twinkie:

I saw them many times in their prime Otis. It was always vaudeville anarchy.
Avatar 2:01pm
Otis:

Franco - Would've loved that to see 'em live. I was a wee bit young in the 70s. Discovered the two through Zappa and realized Turtles around the same time in the mid-80s and from there it was all about solo albums. Gems they are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

The first two times I saw them it was with the band that had been The Mothers minus Frank. He was recuperating from the assault, so they got Gary Rowels who was the lead guitar player from Love. After that they formed a new band that played all over L.A. all the time.

This atrocity was my first introduction to TISM when Harry Shearer played it on "Le Show"
Avatar 2:34pm
Mr Fab:

i was wondering how you'd heard of these guys, since they seemed to have had no American presence.
Avatar 2:35pm
Mr Fab:

So now the question is: how did harry Shearer know about them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
ironybread:

Interesting question Fab, I've never asked him - in those days he was visiting Oz a lot, so he probably heard it on the radio there. The key line for him was no doubt "Now I'm bored and there's no stoppin' / I need another celeb to fill a coffin / Where'll I get my next drug action? / Odds on it'll be Michael Jackson"
