Saw GP and the Rumour in '79 in Boston (the Paradise?). Along with the songs the guitar players were the stars for me (well, and the whole band). I loved the contrast between the two -- Brinsley in like a pressed suit and spectacles intensley focused; Martin looking like he had just rolled out of bed with a beer and cigarette and rollicking about. They were amazing.

I received a gift from an old girlfriend in Seattle in '86 - a boot of an EC & Attractions live show (sounded like King Biscuit). Vintage '79. Steve Naive had broken his arm or something so they had Marty Belmont fill in. Didn't miss a beat. Frantic and truly awesome.

does graham parker have the record for being on the most major labels? at least, being on the most and complaining about the most!

"Fool's Gold" one of the most beautiful, heartfelt songs EVER <3 <3 <3

greetings, Todd and Skeletons and Everyone!
just tuning in now, bummer i missed so much of the show (thank goodness for WFMU archives!)

saw Graham Parker and The Rumour numerous times way back when -- amazing shows

and i gotta look, but i think i still have this "Mercury Poisoning" 45 -- iirc, it is on blue vinyl, and you had to cut some number/code off the LP cover, mail it in, and you got the 45 mailed to you

I wish that guitar didn't have that effect on it. Not a bad sound, but it dates it.

Steady Eddie:

Just wondering if Martin played on any Kirsty MaCColl records?
  4:54pm
DG:

slugluv: Yes, you had to cut that off the cover & send away to Arista (or some affiliated co.) & you got a 7inch 33 1/3 single of "Mercury Poisoning" with "I Want You Back" on the other side. I think I picked mine up in the Village though.
  4:55pm
PJ:

XTC were on a lot of different labels in the US (Virgin US, RSO, Epic, Geffen, TVT) and Andy Partridge complained about every one of them, but GP has them beat (Mercury, Arista, Atlantic, RCA, Razor & Tie, Bloodshot, Universal) by a few labels.
  4:56pm
DG:

...and I assume the version of "Mercury Poisoning" we just heard was from the "Live Sparks" album, not the single.

Yes, the Elektra album (Steady Nerves, there's also a non-LP b-side) is pretty good, the 2 RCA ones are even better (he also did a solo live album on RCA). Never made an album for Atlantic, although he was signed to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
McGroovey:

Huh. I didn't think of Frozen Years as being a standout track on that album. For me, it's Emotional Traffic. I wasn't a WPIX listener.
  5:00pm
PJ:

Just checked the internet - that GP Elektra LP, Steady Nerves, had his only US Top 40 single, "Wake Up (Next to You)". If only he'd used parentheses in the titles of his other singles, he might have had a few more hits.

Fantastic interview, thanks. I blew off my senior prom to see GP and the Rumour at Lupo's in Providence in '79, right after Squeezing Out Sparks came out. They were total pros and put on a good show. It was worth ditching the prom.
