Artist | Track | Album | Comments | Images | Approx. start time |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kingston Trio | Doesn't Anybody Know My Name? | Sunny Side | Notes: "As the draft-age audience saw through the Kingston Trio, and anti-war protest songs caught on, the entertainment arm of the military-industrial complex tried to counter it with right-wing folk and protest songs,..." - Jello | 0:00:00 (Pop-up) | |
SSgt. Barry Sadler | Ballad of the Green Berets | Ballad of the Green Berets | "Such as the famous right-wing alternative to left-wing folk songs by Ssgt. Barry Sadler, "Ballad of the Green Berets." - Jello | 0:05:32 (Pop-up) | |
SSgt, Barry Sadler | The Soldier Has Come Home | Ballad of the Green Berets | "On the album, some other songs hit you like Lou Reed's Berlin: he goes straight into the mind of the women left behind, and the guys not knowing whether they'll get shot or whether they'll make it home. He had a real feel for that sort of thing. He couldn't control himself, however; later he got away with shooting either his wife or his wife's lover--something like that." - Jello | 0:07:47 (Pop-up) | |
Lou Reed | Sad Song | Berlin | 0:10:48 (Pop-up) | ||
The Spokesmen | Dawn of Correction | Dawn of Correction | Another famous right-wing song is "Dawn of Correction" by the Spokesmen -- a rebutal to Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction." - Jello | 0:17:30 (Pop-up) | |
The Beach Bums (Bob Seger) | Ballad of the Yellow Beret | 45 single B-side | A seethingly racist pro-war single titled "Ballad of the Yellow Beret" was the first-ever record by Bob Seger." - Jello | 0:20:55 (Pop-up) | |
The Spotnicks | The Spotnicks Theme | The Spotnicks Vol .1 | "Both unintentionally demented artwork and "packaging ideas gone wrong" appeal to me, like the covers of the Spotnicks. They produced schmaltz-twang guitar instrumental rock albums, and (along with the Shadows) were the European Ventures. ...This cover shows them not just in spacesuits, but spacesuits with extra arms, weird mosquito netting and screen door material on their space helmets, with wires going from helmet to hemet. That's how they could hear each other onstage." - Jello | 0:23:29 (Pop-up) | |
The Shadows | The Savage | Meeting With the Shadows | 0:25:30 (Pop-up) | ||
The Ventures | He Never Came Back | The Ventures in Space | 0:27:46 (Pop-up) | ||
Juicy Lucy | Who Do You Love? | Juicy Lucy | "I'm sure the first Juicy Lucy album (of a woman covered with sticky fruit -- some of it drooling from her mouth), was not nesessarily sensuous or good for sales. It's a shame, because this is a good recording featuring a great steel guitar player, Glenn Ross Campbell (ex-Misunderstood), who can make the instrument scream. It's got some Dr. John "gris-gris" overtones too. This is a long-time favorite album." - Jello | 0:32:56 (Pop-up) | |
Dr. John, The Night Tripper | Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya | Gris-Gris | 0:35:51 (Pop-up) | ||
Blind Date | Twin Engines | Blind Date | "The "Worst New Wave Sleeve Award" belongs to Blind Date, the only new-wave cash-in band put out on John Denver's Wing Song label..." - Jello | 0:41:12 (Pop-up) | |
Piotr Fronczewski | Tandetni, Cholerni Spyrciarze | No Pragu Raju | "Na Progu Raju is a fairly straight record, but for some reason on the cover he had to be green-faced with maniacal eyes. Musically, he's trying to be a more rocking version of Peter Allen or Billy Joel, but with a bit of the ol' beer-hall swagger. For communist government record packaging, this is truly out-to-lunch." - Jellow | 0:44:43 (Pop-up) | |
Silver Blue | Good Vibrations | Silver Blue | Silver Blue, from the disco era, shows a sleazy Barry Manilow-meets-the-Mafia man holding the reins of two scantily-clad blond twins sporting dog collars. On the back he's kindly letting one of them off the leash." _- Jello | 0:51:14 (Pop-up) | |
Ron Nagle | Marijuana Hell | Bad Rice | Warner Brothers did a somewhat famous mispackaging job of Ron Nagle's Bad Rice album. Nagle was a hot singer-songwriter-former Mystery Trend member from San Francisco; now he's a world class ceramicist. Warner Bros gave him a big promotional push, but instead of putting a Jackson Brown-type sensitive artist photo on the cover, they put the words "Bad Rice" above a pile of rice, " - Jello | 0:56:09 (Pop-up) | |
Ron Nagle | Sister Cara | Bad Rice | "and on the back, a truly wasted-looking mug shot of Ron Nagle with one of his teeth missing! What they were expecting to accomplish, I don't know. Somehow, it's not as yuppie-friendly as a smiling Jimmy Buffet. This is especially a shame because the album is a masterpiece...."Marijuana Hell" is about people falling under the spell of pot,...and there's a song about somebody becoming crippled from arthritis-- which most rock'n'roll peopl were not writing songs about!" -Jello | 0:58:53 (Pop-up) | |
Mystery Trend | Johnny was a Goodboy | So Glad I Found You | 1:01:32 (Pop-up) | ||
Michael Fennelly | Pretty Face | Stranger's Bed | Examples of Gender-Mispackaging includes Michael Fennelly. He tried to become a 70's heavy metal star, but his career seems to have ended after Stranger's Bed came out. You don't push an awesome macho rock star by showing him curled up seductively on satin sheets in a bed!" - Jello | 1:04:21 (Pop-up) | |
Baby | Starchild | Baby | ",,,how did they expect Lynyrd Skynyrd fans to go for a band calling themselves Baby?" - Jello (Also the featured album cover on pg. 44) | 1:06:04 (Pop-up) | |
Baby Rocker | Hooray For Hollywood | Young And Mean | "A few years later another band called themselves Baby Rocker; the cover shows a baby doll with a cigar in its mouth, beer-tab earrings, safety pins, and (dare I say it?) a piece of gum stuck on the bottom of a baby shoe..." - Jello | 1:09:13 (Pop-up) | |
Brainstorm | Smile A While (full suite) | Smile A While | "A German hard-space rock album by Brainstorm called Smile A While showed hairy German hippie guys posing in corsets and girdles. Needless to say, it didn't quite work - too much gorilla hair for foundation fetishists, I guess." - Jello | 1:14:03 (Pop-up) | |
Danielle Dax | The Shamemen | Pop-Eyes | The original version of Danielle Dax's first album, Pop Eyes, disappeared quick. Now she has "exotica-goddess from the jungle depths" packaging, but the original cover ...showed cut-up slices of body organs and meat!" - Jello | 1:32:37 (Pop-up) | |
Cain | Katy | A Pound of Flesh | "...Another example of blatant meat-marketing was from a Minnesota metal band called CAIN: their album Pound of Flesh literally showed a pound of oozing flesh protruding from a tin can...tongue-like jelly fingers of undetermined origin." - Jello | 1:36:16 (Pop-up) | |
Lynn Carey | Sweet Talkin' Candyman | Beyond The Valley of the Dolls OST | "Lynn Carey was a songwriter with a powerful Janis Joplin voice who wrote most of the music for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Surprisingly she neither sang on the record nor (considering her looks) appeared in the film." - Jello | 1:42:48 (Pop-up) | |
Mama Lion | Mr. Invitation | Preserve Wildlife | "...But that didn't stop her from using her cheesecake appeal, under the influence of Canadian transplant letch Neil Merryweather; he repackaged her as a serious blues singer, Mama Lion. The front cover shows her behind the bars of a lion cage, and if that isn't enough to offend today's feminists, open up the "cage" and Mama Lion is suckling a lion cub with one of her ample teats. The thing is, she as a really good singer- where is she today?" - Jello | 1:44:35 (Pop-up) | |
The inner sleeve... | 1:46:03 (Pop-up) | ||||
Alan Franklin | Goodbye Daddy | Come Home Baby | Another packaging job gone wrong: 60's punk legend Alan Franklin made a somwhat legendary live album in '69, but hardly anyone knows about his '70's comeback album. Rather than present himself as a heavy raw blues-garage musician from the other side, he had himself photographed in bed with a "Come hither" look - there he is under the covers wwith seemingly no clothes on, a copy of High Times, and a huge wad of hundred-dollar bills on a tray along with a bottle of Chianti. On the back he's posing in Tarzan bikini briefs somewhere in the Everglades. Leave it to Florida..." - Jello | 1:50:52 (Pop-up) | |
Orquestra Fantasma | El Rey Del Guaguanco | Orquestra Fantasma | "Orquesta Fantasma is one of my favorites: it shows these guys in Mexican wrestler garb and KISS makeup posing with a mutilated body in a graveyard-- I suppose it's half-Kiss and half-King Diamond, but I think it predates King Diamond. Musically it's like a cool crude fuzz-guitar version of Santana." - Jello | 1:53:22 (Pop-up) |
