I had never heard of Krisma neither. Their wikipedia page says: "On July 22, 1998 the couple launched Krisma TV, which was broadcast through the Skyplex satellite service (and later Eutelstat) to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43am
Meghan:

good morning HyperDose!

Wow, I wonder what they broadcasted and why and who saw it.... and so so many questions....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46am

Same! There's still a website which maybe brings some answers... www.krismatv.net

Meghan your show sends me down rabbit holes routinely. The never ending search for the next killer band! Many DJ’s on this station have had this effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55am
Meghan:

I blame listener Bill for the snow... he put away his snow gear. He lives in NY State. I told him he should know better...
Avatar 7:56am

Almost lived in NH. Hampton is quite nice, and the cost of living is so low compared to similar areas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56am

awwww thanks leshwatt! It's fun going down these rabbit holes! There is so much great stuff out there that needs to be found!!

I am constantly amazed at how much music WFMU dj’s unearth. What platforms do you use to search? I lam on last.fm and spotify. Some YouTube.
Avatar 8:02am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

leshwatt I always say every FMU-J is a World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
Yvang:

My platform to discover new music is ... wfmu of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am
Meghan:

I use a good combo of things. Spotify, YouTube, old blogs... I'll go in stores and hear something and Shazam it... haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am
Yvang:

Larry Grogan did a show about Plasticland yesterday! Never heard of them before.
Avatar 8:04am
leshwatt:

Yes Shazam is one of the greatest inventions ever. Right up there with the light bulb, or sliced bread.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am
Meghan:

I'm the person that hears music everywhere. It's frustrating when I was working at jobs and I'd know the tape by heart or go into other stores and hear the same tape. I can't drown out the sounds like others
Avatar 8:05am
leshwatt:

At work they play a commercial pop mix and I can’t tune it out either. Good or bad music, I listen.

One day I’m going to infiltrate the Muzak and slip in the Drummer Stream bwahahaha
Avatar 8:07am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

FMU - & Podcasts matter to me - & a few other Stations/Streams. But FMU dominates the timeslots !
Never bothered w/ Spotify or Sirius or - I'm ashamed to say - bandcamp...
Yeeearrs ago there was this thing called Shoutcast that got bought by Yahoo! & so 'monetized' & killed. It was the Spotify of the day. I was invested rating thousands of things to feed the algorithms - & it just ended...
Avatar 8:07am
HyperDose:

@RRN63 I have a friend from high school who lives there with her husband and 2 kids. Delightful people, even offered to let me live with them for a while. But I can't see myself having any luck there outside of small business clients. Didn't seem like there was much of a music scene either.
Avatar 8:09am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11am

Hello Meghan
There was an interesting comment recently about how women and men listen to music. Your comment at 8.03 reminded me.
Women hear music and go that good what is it
Men go what is it, then make a quality judgement.
Avatar 8:12am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Back in the PreWeb days - I worked in CD Stores - listened to Left of Dial local Public (like KCRW in SoCal) & College stations... & I worked in CD Stores - not making ends meet in the Santa Barbara cost of living... & all the way back - my brother was about nine years older than me & a Rawk obsessive with 1,000s of albums & magazines &tc., is what happened to me...
Avatar 8:12am
HyperDose:

I want to disappear like that, but more out west. Buy a plot of land, renovate and convert a barn into a studio, and use the extra space as a volunteer-run animal sanctuary. Have 5 or 6 hired hands on the payroll + an asst engineer. One can dream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
Meghan:

RevRab- I love finding new music on Bandcamp! and I found some great stuff on Soundcloud too
Avatar 8:14am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The West is Horizontal...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Meghan:

ha interesting Brian.... I can see that. I know I listen to music differently than others... but as a WFMU listener I think we all can relate a bit to each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am

@RRN63 I implore you to look up Fort Collins, CO and not completely fall in love. Also The Blasting Room (legendary punk studio) is there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am
Meghan:

Hyperdose- I used to live near Hampton NH. I have a good friend up there. The music scene is definitely in Boston. Though there are things around that area. Hampton Beach has a club that touring bands went to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am

Hi Meghan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am
Brian in UK:

Never really wanted to own music just have it available when I wanted to hear it.
The object had no real interest. Saying that Compact Discs are awful objects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am
Meghan:

morning doctorjazz!!
Avatar 8:18am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always natter on about the book 'This Is Your Brain On Music' - in which author posits that a main way we relate to Music is the balance of Familiarity & Novelty. We want to recognize things - but not be bored either. If so - what is it about the brain of the FMUvian that is wired so differently !...
NH's small coast & the southern bit of the state are a bit more like Mass. ...I'm in the damn hills...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am
Meghan:

Brian- that is a real struggle for me. I go back and forth all the time about that. I want to own the album. There is a tactile quality to holding it, reading it and having a memory attached to the song. A lot of my digital stuff I download and forget. It gets lost. But owning things takes space. And if I buy an album it has to be good cause it costs so much. But i agree, I am done with CD's
Avatar 8:21am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Brian in UK: I always wanted to Own all the Music in the World !! ...So the digital revolution is startling ! I think of Dylan stealing Guthrie albums because there was no other source - or George Harrison saying after the War there you couldn't a cup of sugar let alone a Rawk'n'Roll record - o Donovan talking about learning Blues off 78s ! & now it's a gushing firehose of content I'll never have time for...
Avatar 8:22am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jut listenig to a podcast on TheBeatles - & the old critics talking about Ringo putting out an EP not an Album as a sign of the times...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am
Brian in UK:

Rev, I think we FMU types use musics as the acceptance of how important it is to our lives, not just background. That is not necessarily nerdy but certainly can be.

Like Aldous Huxley on mescalin, wanting to know everything that has happened in the world. EVER.
Avatar 8:24am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Problem with no Artefact is the Internet Providers & such get all the money & the Artists get f*cked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
Meghan:

I dunno... I throw a lot of money at the little guys even using spotify. I use spotify to find music and then I go buy it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25am
Brian in UK:

Meghan certainly with records, the art work was often critical to the object.
Try rolling up on a CD!!!.
Avatar 8:26am
leshwatt:

The internet is wonderful and cruel at the same time. I used to buy vinyl and cd’s out of curiosity about the band. Now you just point and click. The artist gets screwed of course. I’m embarrassed about being on Spotify but I’m a music junkie and I NEED my daily fix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am
Meghan:

hahaha. I used to keep those long cardboard CD cases that you would get as wall art
Avatar 8:27am
TDK60:

Good morning, DJ Meghan.
Avatar 8:27am
leshwatt:

Yeah I would buy an album just cause it looked cool. You could almost pick a great band by its album art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am
Meghan:

morning TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am
Brian in UK:

Enjoying this set, goes well with the sunny day.

Hey TDK60
Avatar 8:28am
TDK60:

Hiya Brian! (east of Wales)
Avatar 8:28am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...otherwise I'm delighted to get everything anytime online ! Just open a vein & stick the FMU stream in me - &tc. ... Yes but Meghan you are much more financially functional than I ever was.
...Yeah - the Art - & it's not sitting with the Album, yerknow ? There are scores of Artists I hear only on FMU - they mean as much to me as any Music ever has to - but I'm not collecting them in my home & learning Names & details...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28am
Meghan:

I would never shame anyone's use of music platforms. I just shame on the music being played.... hahaha
Avatar 8:28am
HyperDose:

@Meghan I've only done the Faneuil Hall tourist thing. Newbury Comics had some dope rare stuff though. What kind of music scene does Boston have?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am
Brian in UK:

I was not one of those who carried albums around as a kind of badge to show which club you belonged to.
Avatar 8:30am
TDK60:

I will reveal here that indeed I did purchase some albums only due to covers. (I can't recall the percentage of pleasure vs. non-pleasure at this time.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am
Meghan:

Well, I haven't been there in the midst of it since 1999... so it's been a while, but man there is an AMAZING scene there! Think about it, all those colleges... you get all the touring bands and all the upcoming bands... I've done all Boston music shows before. Seriously a great scene
Avatar 8:31am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's all changed / changing so rapidly that it's whiplash futureshock...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am
Meghan:

Boston will always have a good punk/hardcore/indie scene
Avatar 8:32am
HyperDose:

The only place I'd never tour is St. Louis. Haven't heard of one band that didn't get their van broken into or the whole van + trailer flat out stolen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am
Brian in UK:

Remember the David St Hubbins saying that Boston is not much of a college town.

In the Seventies over here, universities were probably the best place to see bands and maybe even have them crash at your place afterwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am
Meghan:

I have had many touring hardcore bands crash at my place and be their border crossing phone call. Had members of Godspeed You Black Emperor crash at my place here in JC.
  8:35am
BillD:

Good morning from sunny but chilly Orange County NY.
Avatar 8:35am
HyperDose:

I just love that Harvey Danger (yes, the Flagpole Sitta guys)started out as college chums who didn't even really play. The drummer used a paint tub as a drum. If that isn't Clinton's America, I don't know what is.
Avatar 8:35am
TDK60:

I'll never reveal the times I bought an album, didn't like it, gave it away, then later came to like it. There's only so much embarrassment I can take in one day.
Avatar 8:36am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always say I'm not ashamed of what I used to like - but what I remember I couldn't get to yet !

@Revolution: I wanted to like this book but it's just so dull.
Avatar 8:43am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I remember being a little shit in grade school identifying *completley* with my Who albums. Outta the Library I got Eno, the Staples, Curtis Mayfield - couldn't get to any of them ! Imagine ! Brian in UK exactly. But Frank himself talked smack about Rawk often... We did go from Modern to PostMod - after all !...
Like - how is the Life of Bowie any kind of dull ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am
Meghan:

I have only heard bad things about the Bowie movie....
Avatar 8:44am
TDK60:

They could use this on that Wake show over there..
Avatar 8:45am

Seems to me that RawkStars are so charismatic themselves - & use Identity & Image as part of their palette. So getting some schmuck outta Hollywood to sub for them...

Yvang:

Wape up songs coud be a theme....he he
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am
Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

@Revolution: The comic feels like I am reading an illustrated Wikipedia page. Many pages are <date> [Huge slab of exposition] There isn't enough insight. The dialogue is often superficial or lame.

I'm nearing the end of the book and there's a new level of laziness. The format is <date> Picture of Bowie just saying the city he's playing in.
