WR- we have a short week because tomorrow is Oaks Day (the day before derby when the fillies run) and give all the kids the day off so their parents and teachers can gamble and party without regret of missing the carpool line.
We can't even get gender equality in horse racing - jeez.

We used to go to Belmont every year on Kentucky Derby Day and on my birthday. Good memories of it, but I eventually decided I couldn't do it anymore. But my dad was a handicapper, and I miss it every summer.
We once drove to Louisville from Atlanta, my dad intending to stay a week (or more if he got really hot) and make us enough money to get by for a year or so. But the only Racing Form he could get in ATL did not cover Churchill, and when we got there and asked about shuttles to the track at the motel, we learned the meet would not start for three months. You could see his heart kind of break. We had a nice lunch, got back in the car, and drove back home. Three months later, we didn't have enough money to drive back.
But I did taste shrimp for the first time!

So I got to celebrate my "fully vaxxed" day in bed.

Your dad must have been one hell of a handicapper, for sure.
In a normal year and locally, Derby is 2 solid weeks of parties, concerts and events. It's a serious $ maker for the river city.

He had worked as a hot walker at Belmont in the fifties and loved everything about horse racing, which I still really feel, but I just can't support the industry anymore, I decided. Lifetime positive at Belmont, though!

I struggle with it for sure. I enjoy that I can make an extra month worth of wages in a weekend, but not all the noise and debauchery that comes with it. Hunter Thompson was certain correct in labeling the Derby "Decadent and Depraved"

Somehow I've done it. The one show I won't fit in is Kenzo's. He does those insanely wonderful collages. Not sure how to incorporate that.
