A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I was temporarily a man with a very Red (Left) Hand, when I gave myself a 2nd degree burn while pouring myself a big plastic tumbler of coffee, and the lid of my coffee maker's carafe decided to spontaneously detach, thus dumping boiling java on my digits. Coincidentally, this occurred on the same day marking the anniversary of the original release of "Red Right Hand", which I was reminded of in my Instagram feed that day.

This past year has been so screwy, I have to admit that I didn't really realize that Daniel was gone...just thought he got shifted to another day/time that I wasn't able to tune in to the stream. Used to listen to him fairly regularly, myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
ultradamno:

Blumen was pretty openly dismayed in his farewell ep, I was not happy either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

well, the mismanagement has been steering the station toward mainstream-friendly for several years now...until if it weren't for the alternate streams i wouldn't donate at all. (despite Bryce and Fabio and a few other stellar lights - which he'll probably bump soon too)

it's been consistently more bitter than sweet for 5-10 years now.
...my opinion is that the station manager who, obviously- having a degree in business - is going to be primarily concerned with finances and constant "growth" as a business, should not be the same person as the program director.
someone who wants to stay true to the station's original ideals when it became freeform should be program director; and the station manager should make THAT work ...just as he did when he first took over, and basically saved the station.

We commenters certainly veer older, probably because the message board format is more familiar to us.

i don't know chresti. it seems to me the programming caters to mostly older folks...folks who very often can be swayed toward accepting crap they once hated because there's nostalgia or familiarity.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm

I found these series of Sonic Youth albums really impenetrable. Sort of off-putting in their relentless noisiness but now I really enjoy them. A big F U to their former labels, with the ability to go into their own studio and just experiment with like minded folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
coelacanth∅:

Rich (@921) i do too, but sometimes i ask myself am i just humming along because i was inundated with it when i didn't know how much better it can be?
most disco songs are a good example. they're not any less vacuous than they were then, yet people who hated it then are ready to shake their collective booty now.

i hated most "metal" as a teenager, but having friends in metal bands and trying to turn me on to this and that has opened me up.

I disliked Melvins when they first came around as I lumped them in with the same rather dull bands I remember coming down from Seattle at the time, maybe because of them being associated with Nirvana, as I always regarded as kind of overrated.

Funny thing about metal is how it seems to have become the pathway to noise from the 90s on (where previously it was metal/hard rock to punk/postpunk to noise...they've cut out the middlemen)

coelacanth∅: oh I get it, disco is usually pretty vacuous. But as a ten year old listening to Donna Summer's greatest hits and watching Thank God It's Friday over and over, it was a lovely fantasy world to escape into! Better than the logging towns I grew up in!

ultra d right... by 10th grade there was a treacherous gulf between myself and a boy who was my best friend from ~5th-7th grade... i went punk, he went metal. i considered instrumental proficiency a waste of time if there wasn't feeling in it.

BB (your new moniker is taking some getting used to!,,,i hope you don't mind "BB") i wrote a song back then about disco, the basic idea being that it was just about dancing and fucking and snorting -when there was so much to address in this world... but i did ultimately come around to there being an importance to escape.
it wasn't the music, necessarily, and wasn't the lyrics, *necessarily*... as there was some vital disco.

I just walked in with the pizza to be greeted by this! I use to see Don when he had a regular gig at this bar in Pasadena. It was kind of a pick-up joint that wasn't my type of place, but I would sit at the bar and listen to Don play the grand piano. He would always do a medley of old MOI material. We would exchange knowing glances. It made me very happy, and I would walk home drunk and alone.
