Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Broadway on, Broadway off, Broadway on, Broadway off.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi there ushers!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Webhamster Henry:

Lizzie Borden is of course from New Faces of '52
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi WR and Henry!!!! Have you heard the GREAT NEWS alluded to in the title of this show??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

and by alluded to i mean explicitly stated
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Webhamster Henry:

What about Off Broadway? Speaking of which, my son has been accepted for a summer internship at INTAR.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm WR:

This program is my primary source of musical news, if you have informed me then I've been informed.
Avatar 7:13pm Fox:

Hallooooo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: That is so great, congrats to him!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Fox!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Webhamster Henry:

I figgered this was a Sammy number.
Avatar 7:18pm Fox:

Hi Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: It would be perfect for him, it def sounds like that's what they were going for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Bronwyn Bishop:

this song took five people to write
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm WR:

A twist musical?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Webhamster Henry:

I think it's Do the Squat, not the Twist.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Webhamster Henry:

Also: Hank Beebe of Bathtubs On Broadway fame!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm doctorjazz:

Goo Bronwyn and Jazzers!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm doctorjazz:

(That should have read, Hi Bronwyn and Jazzers...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Lol I love greeting people with Goo! i'm gonna say that from now on
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm WR:

I'm happy to report that my first home attempt of making an egg cream is a total success.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Bronwyn Bishop:

mmm egg cream
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm doctorjazz:

It's all in getting the exact proportions-I've been to many restaurants/ice cream parlors that can't get an egg cream right! It's joyous when you get a great one!
Avatar 🎭 7:47pm Listener Gregory:

Good morning, nighthawks. Sorry for being tardy.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm WR:

Read recently that U-Bet was closing their Long Island facility and possibly outsourcing production. Next trip to the grocery saw they had a display featuring various flavors and that they also had a sale on seltzer. I took it as a sign.
Avatar 🎭 7:48pm Listener Gregory:

Sorry, @doctorj, I meant Goo, of course!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm doctorjazz:

LG, Goo to you too!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm WR:

I've had a few at various NY & NJ diners. The one I made topped them all. Studied various articles and blogs. Correct proportions, a cold glass and drinking immediately I think made for success.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm WR:

So far, beside possibly the Lizzie Borden song, I have not heard or seen anything about any of these tunes in this episode. Oh, wait, Get Happy was a dance band favorite, I know this one.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm doctorjazz:

Before the pandemic, I ate at the Second Avenue Deli, NYC. At the end of the meal they serve everyone a small shot glass of chocolate egg cream, which was terrific. I ordered a regular sized one, they didn't get it right on that one.
Avatar 🎭 8:00pm Listener Gregory:

Jerome Kern collected books for about 15 years and then suddenly tired of this hobby. He sold his entire collection in 1929, and it was the most successful book sale in history. Some of the prices have not been matched since. He celebrated his success by putting all the money into the stock market. Oops...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm northguineahills:

Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 8:12pm Listener Gregory:

It’s great to hear the golden oldies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Bronwyn Bishop:

ngh!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm WR:

New genre I am delighting in, compositions that reference type of music with little or no relationship to that type of music. Tuesday night hear a recording by Roy Eldridge with bossa nova in the title and now this tango tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm northguineahills:

I prefer my musicals operatic, except when they're not!
Avatar 🎭 8:15pm Listener Gregory:

“All nice girls love a sailor.”
Avatar 🎭 8:16pm Listener Gregory:

@WR, you may have your work cut out for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm northguineahills:

*these singers are not officially associated w/ Yale.....*
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm WR:

I know @LG, there are rampant examples, and previously I found them egregious but the Eldridge recording and this tango tune have made me rethink cultural appropriation.
Avatar 🎭 8:23pm Listener Gregory:

@WR, bop til you drop!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm doctorjazz:

There are many tunes called "Blues" that aren't blues. Lovesick Blues comes to mind off the top of my head.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm WR:

doctorjazz, you might find this Long Way home episode fun. A whole show of jazz issued on 45 RPM 7" disks.
wfmu.org...

Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane with side trips with likes of Spike Milligan on trumpet.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Webhamster Henry:

Sometimes I wonder about Gershwin just sitting at the piano , plunking out tune after tune.
Avatar 🎭 8:32pm Listener Gregory:

BB, shouldn’t you be playing songs about spring??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yehudi Menuhin, star of one of my favorite Ron Mael lyrics: "It's a lot like playing the violin/You cannot start off and be Yehudi Menuhin"

Ron Mael is a real loss to theatre lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: You've got a point lol. Spring songs to come!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm doctorjazz:

Thanks WR, looks like a great playlist!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Webhamster Henry:

"I Hate the Spring" Noël Coward and Bea Lillie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm northguineahills:

Wow, digging this set!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Webhamster Henry:

Do the Varsity Drag with Peter O'Toole www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🎭 8:42pm Listener Gregory:

Charlie Parker would play a lick of My Man in the middle of whatever he was playing whenever his drug supplier came onto the club. This is true.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Webhamster Henry:

IJCMMEB was a big hit for Anna Held, but she never recorded it.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm doctorjazz:

Don't make it through many shows that end at midnight, get up too early, need my beauty rest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: So before the guy came in he was...waiting for his man?
Avatar 🎭 8:48pm Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, I think your watch is fast.
Avatar 🎭 8:49pm Listener Gregory:

BB, totally! Only he couldn’t quote that song yet.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm doctorjazz:

Not tonight, LG, but The Long Way Home is one I catch in archives.
I think Bird was being sarcastic in his way, he needed his man, but didn't love it.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

Almost the end, great show, thanks, Bronwyn!
Later, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU doctorjazz!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

one weird thing about avenue q is that they're all broke but only the bert and ernie characters have roommates? is this a 2003 thing?
Avatar 🎭 8:59pm Listener Gregory:

Life outside your apartment... is this some kind of fantasy or Science Fiction song?
Thanks for an excellent show, BB!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Webhamster Henry:

Till next time!! thanks Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm WR:

thank you Bronwyn! Laters all.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm WR:

PS: great show. Lots to study on.
