The most important thing: he was *so* intimidating for the first hour we were together (literally, me leading him around NYC from one interview to the next). Then I started poking light fun at him for being such “the artist” and...you know, he was just lovely. Even called me a few years later on his next visit to NYC. Smart and sensitive. Man did we charge a lot of expensive wine to Trent Reznor.

Which reminds me...I spent an hour with Nick Cave about a decade prior, in his Mpls hotel room, before a show on the Tender Prey tour. I was some college radio nobody, I had just phoned up Mute and said “can I tape record an interview with Nick Cave for my 4-watt radio station,” and they were supposed to say no, but instead they told me to go to there that afternoon and just...I got led up to Nick Cave’s hotel room and got left there with him at like 3pm on a show day. Just me and him. I thought of this because he, too, was unfathomably kind and generous behind a veneer of seemingly impenetrable cool. He had recently finished treatment for an addiction, and during our literal 58 minutes together he drank almost an entire 6-pack of Dad’s Root Beer. When he reached for like his fourth can he saw my eyes bugging out and said, “Off one thing, onto another.” I also was there when his suit, pressed and cleaned for that night’s show, arrived. That felt like an important moment. Nick Cave everyone, worth the adulation.

Dave Grohl was nowhere to be found, thankfully. Trent paid for our wine because he put out Ende Neu in the US. [I still think I got the job as publ for the album because I walked into Interscope’s office and could not only spell Einstürzende Neubauten but pronounce it as well.]

That reminds me of that Steve-O story where as a kid he called every hotel within a 5 mile radius asking for Motley Crue's manager. To his surprise it worked and he got through. They invited him and his dad to attend a show and hang out after. Sometimes meeting your heroes is everything you hoped it'd be. You never know until you try. 🙂
