For years, I listened to the Troggs '60s tracks over and over, but I didn't venture into their '70s material. When that 2-CD "anthology" hot the streets in the '90s, I was amazed at just how strong the band remained right until the mid-'70s. Great material! Just wasn't as easy to "sample before buying" back then!

Becky Ebenkamp:

It had something to do with payola and Phil not wanting to give any to radio stations. The story is in Hit Men. He tried a little “experiment” with “River Deep” and it got no play.

Eric R:

don't call it "payola". It's "promotion incentive program"

great book

hey alvy! yes she is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Becky Ebenkamp:

Payola may not be the right word, but it was some shady record biz thing and Phil took a chance (thinking the song was so great they would have to give in).

I also liked Jesse Malin at the trib, Joe

this sounds familiar! Lloyd Price must have liked it.

Spector gave Ike Turner $20,000 for total control of production on River Deep, even though Ike's name still appeared on the record.

I do like P.I.P. tho.

That was the same song Courtney garbled her way thru!

I have mixed feelings about River Deep. It's a great production but, for me, there's something missing. It's not a chart record, it's a listening record. They loved it in England, though, I hear.

Art Rupe must have had a fit when he heard this plaigeristic take on Lawdy miss clawdy by BG.

I counted three repeats - that one, that thing you do and hackensack

I like the Lena Zavaroni version. It’s appropriate for a 10 year old. She still has a ragdoll. And a puppy.
