Your DJ Speaks | ||||||
Sparks | Girl from Germany | 7" Single | 0:00:52 (Pop-up)
Skyhooks | Horror Movie | Ego Is Not a Dirty Word | "Comparable to Sparks in terms of high-voiced glitter rock was the most popular Australian band of their day, the Skyhooks. They were one of the first to flaunt their "Australian-ness" and become popular for it in Australia. Their Russell Mael-like lyrics, which trashed the trends of the day, gave a very cynical look at '70's singles-bar stupidity. Their outfits were incredible: part glam, part children's fairytale robes, with occasional Banana Splits fur. The main songwriter, Greg Macainsh, was quite witty, and I'm amazed that he only produces TV shows today." - Jello | 0:04:26 (Pop-up)
Milk 'N Cookies | (Dee Dee, You're) Stuck on a Star | Milk 'N Cookies | "For the teenybopper market came Milk 'N Cookies, led by Ian North from New York who supposedly had an attitude a mile wide - all the funnier considering how wimpy his band was. His voice was an even more breathy/cutesy version of Russell Mael or Peter Ivers. The cover shows one member holding an oversize football, and off to the side a cheerleader is fixing her hose." - Jello | 0:07:30 (Pop-up)
Milk 'N Cookies | Tinker Toy Tomorrow | Milk 'N' Cookies | MP3 | (My fave track that was included on the 2005 CD Re-issue) - Your DJ | 0:10:27 (Pop-up)
The Starz | Pull The Plug | Starz | "The Starz were groomed by KISS's manager to succeed them, but they went into a drastically different direction economically! Their only good song was a morbid heart-thumping dirge called "Pull the Plug"... I think it was about Karen Ann Quinlan." - Jello | 0:12:49 (Pop-up)
Sparks | This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us | Single | (Sparks request by my wife) - Your DJ | 0:17:26 (Pop-up)
Sparks | I Want To Hold Your Hand | Single | (Sparks request by me.) - Your DJ | 0:20:47 (Pop-up)
Peter Ivers | Miraculous Weekend | Nirvana Peter | 0:23:27 (Pop-up)
Pavlov's Dog | Julia | Pampered Menial | "Another unique band of the time was Pavlov's Dog, produced by the same people who did Blue Oyster Cult and the Dictators. David Surkamp's freak, pain drenched vibrato voice was higher than either Russell Mael's or Peter Ivers', and it warbled clear up to Japanese kabuki standards - his voice could literally stick it's needle-like fingers around your spine and pull. The songs weren't so special, but that voice as one-of-a-kind never equalled." - Jello | 0:26:51 (Pop-up)
The St. Louis "Hounds" | Only You | The St. Louis "Hounds" | "They did two albums and Columbia refused to release the third, so they ended up having to bootleg themselves in their hometown under the name of St. Louis Hounds." - Jello | 0:30:01 (Pop-up)
Crack the Sky | Surf City | Crack the Sky | "On the surface, Crack the Sky was a sophisticated, slightly poppish rock band. All the members seemed to be picked for their looks, except for John Palumbo who just happened to be the one who wrote all the songs. A song titled "Surf City" had the refrain "Surf City, here come the sharks!" - Jello | 0:34:33 (Pop-up)
Crack the Sky | Robots For Ronnie | Crack the Sky | "But instead of going into really mean, humorous put-downs (like Russell Mael does) of people in stupid social trends, he writes penetrating songs about loneliness and growing up in isolation: e.g., "Robots for Ronnie," which is about a fat little boy who had no friends. The boys think he's queer and the girls stay away, so what Ronnie needs is som stainless-steel chums: "a boy and a girl; maybe and aluminum cat." - Jello | 0:38:05 (Pop-up)
John Palumbo | It's Okay To Die | Innocent Bystander | Then Palumbo left Crack the Sky and went for the Barry Manilow market; Innocent Bystander shows him standing in a black suit by a white piano and looking a lot like a Manilow or Neal Diamond type, but one thing got in his way: he couldn't stop writing such hateful, depressing lyrics. For example, in a string drenched '70's pop-dreck way he'd croon, "It's okay to die." "When Raymond comes home tonight he'll crack up on his bike, fracture his skull and he will die. Mummy and dad will be so very sad; they'll be so very sad and they will cry," etc. John Palumbo, the singer-songwriter from hell! - Jello | 0:42:36 (Pop-up)
Jerry Howard | Tumbling Tumbleweeds | Crazy Guitar | (Featured album cover on the bottom of pg. 46) | 0:45:30 (Pop-up)
Rick Derringer | The Airport Giveth; The Airport Taketh Away | All American Boy | "Seventies crotch-rocker Rick Derringer was finally on the brink of the arena-stardom he'd geared his whole life for when "Rock'n'Roll Hoocki Koo" was a single. But instead of following up with a kick-a.. hard rock album, he handed his fans All American Boy, featuring hilarious, sappy, tear-jerker ballads like "The Airport Giveth; The Airport Taketh Away." That was in cut-out bins for years afterwards." - Jello | 0:48:02 (Pop-up)
The Bee Gees / Jay MacIntosh / John Wheeler | She's Leaving Home | Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (movie soundtrack) | That wasn't nearly as big a disaster as the deserved retribution incurred by Robert Stigwood. After Saturday Night Fever and the BeeGees and 461 Ocean Boulevard, he sunk all his profits into a movie of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with the disco BeeGees playing the Beatles and Peter Frampton as the 4th member. The double LP as supposed to be Stigwood's crowning moment, bigger than Saturday Night Fever, and it shipped triple-platinum to the stores. Shortly thereafter it shipped triple-platinum back to RSO Records. This was the Heaven's Gate of the recording industry! Stigwood was never quite as powerful again." - Jello | 0:50:50 (Pop-up)
Third World War | Acension Day | Third World War | "...whatever happened to Third World War? They were a '70's band from England who had much more of a garage-y tone than most bands of their day - as powerful as the Pink Fairies. What set them apart was their political angle: as left-wing, Communist working-class brawlers. They put out two albums on major labels, and how did they get away with this - their first album had lyrics like "Waiting on the rooftops/looking for a sign/ Pull your hand-grenade pin/ I'll pull mine/ Power to the people, when we rise/ Power to the poor, when we rise...There's people out of work here/ There could be a riot here/ Very soon you know, there could be a riot everywhere." - Jello | 0:53:42 (Pop-up)
Pink Fairies | Do It! | Do It! | 0:58:32 (Pop-up)
Zolar X | Timeless (The Video) | Youtube Footage | For all-time great packaging jobs we must move back to San Francisco for Zolar X, a glitter-rock band who wore Spotnicks-type space helmets and spacesuits onstage, complete with paste-on pointy ears. ...Sort of a missing link between Chrome and the Stooges, complete with electronic effects..." - Jello | 1:01:34 (Pop-up)
Chrome | All Data Lost | Alien Soundtracks | 1:04:46 (Pop-up)
The Stooges | Ann | The Stooges | 1:07:58 (Pop-up)
Death S.S. | Terror | The Story Of Death SS 1977-1984 | "From Italy is Death S.S. ('77-'84), a spacey occult metal band. They wore lots of make-up, and were led by Paul Chain who later renounced the occult and started making Christian gothic metal albums - ...Musically they were great. Visually, years before Spinal Tap, Death S.S. were putting little plastic crosses and gravestones on stage - except that underneath their white makeup they were serious. The bass player wore a mummy suit from head to toe." - Jello | 1:10:58 (Pop-up)
Paul Chain | Eternal Flame | King of the Dream | "...he remains as dark and sinister-sounding as he was before. The cover of his first solo 12" showed him with a very Manson-esque look in his eyes." - Jello | 1:18:21 (Pop-up)
Baby Blue (Angelyne Alyne) | Rock 'N Roll Rebel | 45 Single | "Angeline (actually spelled Angelyne) first surfaced on the Baby Blue single out of the Masque punk scene in L.A. '77 - she has a chirpy voice and sings catchy girl group songs- what a voice and what an image." - Jello | 1:22:51 (Pop-up)
Angelyne | Loony Bin | Angelyne | "Apparently she had a wealthy husband who...paid for billboards promoting her and produced a number of later records including picture discs. Her song titles include "Loony Bin," "Sexy Stranger," and "Dracula" (actual title is "Draculove.") | 1:25:51 (Pop-up)
Angelyne | Draculove | Angelyne | "She drives around L.A. in a pink Corvette and gets on talk shows just because she's Angeline and she knows she's a star."- Jello | 1:29:09 (Pop-up)
(Bonus track) Angelyne | My List | Driven To Fantasy | "John Waters was taken by her and tried to interview her, but finally decided that even though she was rediculous (to the point of having a huge portrait of herself painted on the side of a multi-story hotel), she had no sense of humor and herself and too her trip totally seriously. She even said, "Jayne Mansfield learned everything she knew from me," although Angelyne as probably 10 years old at the time Jayne died!" | 1:31:43 (Pop-up)

Lucia Pamela | Dear Me | Into Outer Space with Lucia Pamela | (Featured album cover on top of pg. 47) | 1:35:08 (Pop-up)
Icecross | 1999 | "I'll also take chances on records from small, remote countries-- that's how I found out that Iceland had produced one of the darkest, grimmest and most brutal psych records I've ever heard: Ice Cross. At times they even remind me of the early Meat Puppets, especially their song "1999." - Jello | 1:38:26 (Pop-up)
Meat Puppets | Reward | Meat Puppets | 1:43:26 (Pop-up)
Traffic Sound | Sueño | A Bailar Go-Go | "One of my all-time favorites is a band called Traffic Sound from Peru. They produced a mix of psychedelic rock and Andean folk music; you could imagine being at Machu Picchu looking out over the clouds while stoned." - Jello | 1:44:26 (Pop-up)
The Ramones | I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement | Ramones | "Part of the reason I search for weird rock-ethnic-experimental music hybrids is: they inspire me to come up with new material. I get aggravated by people who spend their life trying to sound like their chosen formula over and over again, and wind up sounding inferior. For example, I'd rather listen to a Ramones or Husker Du album than the hundred or so Husker Du clones who've flooded our mailbox with demo tapes." - Jello | 1:47:46 (Pop-up)
Hüsker Dü | I Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely | Candy Apple Grey | "So when I'm trying to write new songs, I hardly ever listen to any music that sounds like my own-- I listen to everything else instead! The more bent and unexpected, the better - you never know what you may find, and what sort of catalyst/inspiration it could be. And magic accidents only happen to those open enough to not expect them! People have complained to me that their favorite thrift store watering holes have dried up after Incredibly Strange Music, Vol. One came out. So what? Dig deeper. Burn new borders and let the mind fly. For those who stay curious, there are always new frontiers..." - Jello | 1:50:21 (Pop-up)
(Bonus guest artist spotlight) Bee Money | The Ladies Track | Bee Money's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 | From a batch of new tracks submitted to this show by local outsider rapper Bee Money. When I asked Bee if "Track 4 had a title he said, "That track is called The Ladies Track!" | 1:54:03 (Pop-up) |

It's not a parody, really. Wonder what they were going for with this.

I kick myself for not getting into Chrome when I was a kid. They were everything I was looking for back then.
